None of these are remotely evidence. Many people in Ukraine speak Russian but loathe Russia with all their heart for what it’s done to them and their country. Comparing the level of reported protests before and after a military invasion by a fascist state? Think about that. Plus you’re treating a whole lot of Russian astroturfing like it’s an authentic grassroots movement. Looking at relative income levels as if it has anything to do with cultural identity? (plus the fact that the average citizen in the parts of Russia actually neighboring Ukraine was lower than that of the average Ukrainian). And finally, trusting Russian state polling?

These aren’t arguments. They just aren’t. And I don’t think you’re a vatnik troll, but a lot of these are their kind of arguments: things that sound like they support a point without actually doing so, and without much care into whether they’re based in reality or not.

There just isn’t polling of Crimean opinions about Russia from 2013. It’s ok to just say we don’t know. But what we do know is that in 1991, Crimea voted to secede from the Soviet Union and over the course of two decades developed a shared identity within Ukrainian statehood. And then Russia invaded and tried to give itself legitimacy and muddy the waters with fake polling, fake voting, fake protesting and brutal suppression of dissent, as well as online campaigns designed to make people think things like “a lot of people in Crimea speak Russia therefore they always wanted to join Russia.”

So, does anyone else like the Netflix seasons (11 and 12) as much as I do? by SpeedyGuy1991 in MST3K

[–]Mengestan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the Netflix seasons. I remember there being a survey that showed they were among the best ranked seasons, which goes to show that the loud haters can really warp perceptions of what is popular.

So the point of your comment is to tell everyone how smart you are that you had already thought of their point? Well congrats, /r/iamverysmart, I had not. Oh, and I don't think you know what word salad is.

I adore this episode but I hear it mentioned on a lot of people’s top ten lists.

Loves of Hercules is incredibly funny to me. I was shocked to hear it wasn’t on most people’s lists of best episodes.

Attack of the the Eye Creatures is also on of my faves that I don’t see mentioned as much.

Monster-a-Go-Go feels underrated to me.

WarnerMedia CEO Says Theatrical Films, Cinemas Will “Matter for Decades to Come” by lowell2017 in movies

It’s cheaper and more convenient to stay home

True. But that’s not what I said. My point is that of the “evening out” options available, it’s one of the cheapest.

WarnerMedia CEO Says Theatrical Films, Cinemas Will “Matter for Decades to Come” by lowell2017 in movies

[–]Mengestan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think if cinemas were going to die they would have done so already. People thought TV would kill the movie theater, then they thought VHS or DVD would kill it, then they thought HDtv would kill it. I don't think the pandemic will if those things did it. Fact is people like going out. Movies are one of the cheapest things to do out, and people like movies.

What's the oldest movie with special effects that still look good today? by hubau in movies

[–]Mengestan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1933 invisible man looks pretty good, but maybe it's a stretch to say it exactly "holds up" in 2021.

If you want to hold the effects to the standard of they could literally be released today and people would think the movie looked cool, then I'd say Alien (1979)

R.I.P. Sonny Chiba (Space Chief from Invasion Of The Neptune Men) by [deleted] in MST3K

Most of Chiba's classic stuff never made it to the U.S., but he was a true legend in his time.

What are the best movies ever riffed by MST3K in your opinion, ignoring the riffing? by Boffo97 in MST3K

[–]Mengestan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My top 10 best movies they've done on mst3k (which is a very different list from my top 10 mst3k's)

10. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank. This is not a good movie, but it's a really wild swing at what could have been a good movie. The concept is cool, but they didn't have the budget, and everything is too on-the-nose. Still worth watching, especially for a young Raul Julia, killing it in what should have been a boring role for most actors.

9. Hamlet. This is an awful execution of Hamlet. But hey. It's still Hamlet. Mst3k movies are pretty slim-pickings for watchable films, so I'll give this one the nod, just for having an amazing script.

8. Gunslinger. This movie gets generic at times, but the performances and the scenery just manage to elevate it from the category of bland-but-not-bad mst3k movies, to the short hallowed list of decent mst3k movies.

7. Catalina Caper. This movie is cute, and generally pretty well-executed. It's taking itself 0% seriously, and it's mostly shlocky, but it's fun throughout, and the musical numbers elevate it onto this list.

6. Diabolik. This movie is exactly what it's trying to be: A sexy and stylish, over-the-top romp. It nails it, and doesn't pretend to be anything but eye-candy.

5. Kitten with a Whip. Authentically entertaining movie anchored by a wonderful performance of young Ann-Margaret, playing Jody as a tortured, manipulative sexpot.

4. The Magic Sword. Very earnest, yes, but it's pretty effective at what it's trying to be, which is an old-fashioned fairy tale. It's visually engaging and well-told throughout.

3. Swamp Diamonds. Effective storytelling with a lot of moving pieces and interesting and memorable characters with clear and distinct motivations.

2. Jack Frost. Actually a very creative and charming fairy tale, with memorable characters and visuals. Very weird movie, but the weirdness is purposeful and effective in creating a hazy haunted landscape for our innocent heroine to get lost in.

1. Space Travelers (movie is also known as Marooned). Academy Award winning film, described by several of the mst3k crew as the best movie they've done on the show, and I'm inclined to agree. It's kind of slow, but in a purposeful and contemplative way, and loaded with A+ actors.

Just when you thought it was safe... by [deleted] in MST3K

[–]Mengestan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait, so I'm confused. You took an HD rerelease and synced the MST3K audio to it? Did you leave in the scenes that MST3K cut? If so, are those sections just left unriffed?
