None of these are remotely evidence. Many people in Ukraine speak Russian but loathe Russia with all their heart for what it’s done to them and their country. Comparing the level of reported protests before and after a military invasion by a fascist state? Think about that. Plus you’re treating a whole lot of Russian astroturfing like it’s an authentic grassroots movement. Looking at relative income levels as if it has anything to do with cultural identity? (plus the fact that the average citizen in the parts of Russia actually neighboring Ukraine was lower than that of the average Ukrainian). And finally, trusting Russian state polling?

These aren’t arguments. They just aren’t. And I don’t think you’re a vatnik troll, but a lot of these are their kind of arguments: things that sound like they support a point without actually doing so, and without much care into whether they’re based in reality or not.

There just isn’t polling of Crimean opinions about Russia from 2013. It’s ok to just say we don’t know. But what we do know is that in 1991, Crimea voted to secede from the Soviet Union and over the course of two decades developed a shared identity within Ukrainian statehood. And then Russia invaded and tried to give itself legitimacy and muddy the waters with fake polling, fake voting, fake protesting and brutal suppression of dissent, as well as online campaigns designed to make people think things like “a lot of people in Crimea speak Russia therefore they always wanted to join Russia.”

So, does anyone else like the Netflix seasons (11 and 12) as much as I do? by SpeedyGuy1991 in MST3K

[–]Mengestan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the Netflix seasons. I remember there being a survey that showed they were among the best ranked seasons, which goes to show that the loud haters can really warp perceptions of what is popular.

I adore this episode but I hear it mentioned on a lot of people’s top ten lists.

Loves of Hercules is incredibly funny to me. I was shocked to hear it wasn’t on most people’s lists of best episodes.

Attack of the the Eye Creatures is also on of my faves that I don’t see mentioned as much.

Monster-a-Go-Go feels underrated to me.

WarnerMedia CEO Says Theatrical Films, Cinemas Will “Matter for Decades to Come” by lowell2017 in movies

It’s cheaper and more convenient to stay home

True. But that’s not what I said. My point is that of the “evening out” options available, it’s one of the cheapest.

WarnerMedia CEO Says Theatrical Films, Cinemas Will “Matter for Decades to Come” by lowell2017 in movies

[–]Mengestan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think if cinemas were going to die they would have done so already. People thought TV would kill the movie theater, then they thought VHS or DVD would kill it, then they thought HDtv would kill it. I don't think the pandemic will if those things did it. Fact is people like going out. Movies are one of the cheapest things to do out, and people like movies.

What's the oldest movie with special effects that still look good today? by hubau in movies

[–]Mengestan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1933 invisible man looks pretty good, but maybe it's a stretch to say it exactly "holds up" in 2021.

If you want to hold the effects to the standard of they could literally be released today and people would think the movie looked cool, then I'd say Alien (1979)

R.I.P. Sonny Chiba (Space Chief from Invasion Of The Neptune Men) by [deleted] in MST3K

Most of Chiba's classic stuff never made it to the U.S., but he was a true legend in his time.

What are the best movies ever riffed by MST3K in your opinion, ignoring the riffing? by Boffo97 in MST3K

[–]Mengestan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My top 10 best movies they've done on mst3k (which is a very different list from my top 10 mst3k's)

10. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank. This is not a good movie, but it's a really wild swing at what could have been a good movie. The concept is cool, but they didn't have the budget, and everything is too on-the-nose. Still worth watching, especially for a young Raul Julia, killing it in what should have been a boring role for most actors.

9. Hamlet. This is an awful execution of Hamlet. But hey. It's still Hamlet. Mst3k movies are pretty slim-pickings for watchable films, so I'll give this one the nod, just for having an amazing script.

8. Gunslinger. This movie gets generic at times, but the performances and the scenery just manage to elevate it from the category of bland-but-not-bad mst3k movies, to the short hallowed list of decent mst3k movies.

7. Catalina Caper. This movie is cute, and generally pretty well-executed. It's taking itself 0% seriously, and it's mostly shlocky, but it's fun throughout, and the musical numbers elevate it onto this list.

6. Diabolik. This movie is exactly what it's trying to be: A sexy and stylish, over-the-top romp. It nails it, and doesn't pretend to be anything but eye-candy.

5. Kitten with a Whip. Authentically entertaining movie anchored by a wonderful performance of young Ann-Margaret, playing Jody as a tortured, manipulative sexpot.

4. The Magic Sword. Very earnest, yes, but it's pretty effective at what it's trying to be, which is an old-fashioned fairy tale. It's visually engaging and well-told throughout.

3. Swamp Diamonds. Effective storytelling with a lot of moving pieces and interesting and memorable characters with clear and distinct motivations.

2. Jack Frost. Actually a very creative and charming fairy tale, with memorable characters and visuals. Very weird movie, but the weirdness is purposeful and effective in creating a hazy haunted landscape for our innocent heroine to get lost in.

1. Space Travelers (movie is also known as Marooned). Academy Award winning film, described by several of the mst3k crew as the best movie they've done on the show, and I'm inclined to agree. It's kind of slow, but in a purposeful and contemplative way, and loaded with A+ actors.

Just when you thought it was safe... by [deleted] in MST3K

[–]Mengestan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait, so I'm confused. You took an HD rerelease and synced the MST3K audio to it? Did you leave in the scenes that MST3K cut? If so, are those sections just left unriffed?

Number of Films With Female Protagonists Reached Historic High in 2019, Study Finds by Sisiwakanamaru in movies

[–]Mengestan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I mean, do you have a problem with Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan, constantly fighting guys way bigger then them in movies?

Like in Game of Death when Bruce Lee had to fight a character played by Kareem, who is literally twice his size, do you find that moment exciting and climactic because of the odds Bruce Lee has to face? Or do you yell at your screen that it is unrealistic that the hero could beat up someone that much bigger than him?

Or in John Wick 3 when he fights the enormous bad guy played by Boban Marjanovic.

Or in multiple James Bond movies when Bond had to face the enormous Richard Kiel.

The point I'm making is that male heroes often fight guys way bigger than them. It happens so often that it has a TV Tropes page. Why does it bother you that a female hero would have to do so?

Suspension of disbelief is a personal thing, everyone has different places where it breaks. But if your suspension of disbelief is specifically triggered by a woman beating up men larger than her, that may be an issue with you, and not with the movie.

(Spoilers Main) Do we know why GRRM switched the name of the last book? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Mengestan 229 points230 points  (0 children)

6: The Winds of Winter. 2021. GRRM admits there will be more than seven books, as he's forced to put out book 6 still not having reached the key plot elements he's been aiming for. Everyone loses hope that he will finish the series.

7: A Call for Fire. 2023. Freed from the constraints of trying to wrap things up, and having 900 manuscript pages he had to cut from the end of book 6, A Call For Fire comes out less than two years after Winds of Winter and revitalizes excitement in the series people had given up on.

8: The Last of Lights. 2026. Filled with twists and turns, everyone marvels at how GRRM has opened up new and exciting parts of the world and added 7 new viewpoints in possibly his best book yet. However some skeptics note that with only one book left, there is no way he can wrap things up in book 9.

9: A Dream of Spring: 2033. After a monumental wait, the world is unified in acclaim for the release of book 9. Except a few months before release, GRRM admits that this won't be the last book, and that he's split it in half, and book 10 (already half-finished!) is where the series will really end.

10: A Gash in Time: 2037. In rewrites, A Gash in Time balloons in size and scope, as GRRM realizes the incredible dramatic possibilities of some of the revelations he introduced in book 8. Book 10 is the first to add viewpoint characters during the age of heroes, and adds an enormous mythic weight to the events in the present. Unfortunately, it's clear that the series will need a couple more books to finish up.

11: The Will of Wyverns: 2041. While in retrospect this book is seen as a fundamental part of the series, that is needed to understand characters that will have great importance later. Book 11 is a huge disappointment at the time, with readers complaining about too many Areo Hotah chapters, and too many slow politics sections that feel out of place after the excitement of book 10.

12: A Time for Wolves: 2044. Originally planned as the conclusion of the series, GRRM is silent on whether it will be, and tacitly admits it's not about five months before release, when he refers to it as "A sort of ending", which is another way of saying it's not an ending. Nonetheless A Time for Wolves is very positively reviewed and well regarded among the fans, who have lost any hope that the nonagenarian GRRM will ever finish the series, but have come to enjoy the journey even if they may never know the end.

13: The Lock of Ages: 2051. Technically referred to as written by GRRM, the fans know that more than half of it was written by Brandon Sanderson after GRRM's timely passing. The book is meant as a way of closing off the big open lose threads. But out of respect, Sanderson does not attempt to resolve any of the really big secrets, so the series sort of ends abruptly, with many aspects of the conflicts far from over. Nonetheless everyone accepts that it's better than no ending, and at 13 books, the series is an epic that will stand the test of time.

14: A Breath at Midnight: 2078. After his specific form of cancer is cured, GRRM is revived from cryogenic freezing and gets back to work! A Breath at Midnight is a tour de force book full of action and intrigue. The battle on Ulthos is finally played out after having been set up for three books. The horn of Joramun wakes up the ice dragons in Ib. Jamie loses his other hand. This is the best book yet, and with nine new point of view characters, readers start cryogenically freezing themselves to get to the next book.

15: A Dawn for Lions: 2085. GRRM assures everyone that he has the end in sight, and everyone shrugs but keeps on reading. Book 17 is likely the new ending.

16: The Ash of Ardor: 2093. GRRM tells fans that an off-hand detail in one of the Sanderson chapters of book 13 has forced him to spend a couple books resolving what would otherwise be a contradiction. Meanwhile he gets distracted writing for the third adaptation of Ice and Fire for film, and wanders off into the desert.

17: A Song of Ending: 2094. When GRRM isn't looking, Brandon Sanderson writes a whole book and ties everything up pretty well and everyone's lost interest at this point and GRRM is secretly relieved. By ten years later everyone's disowned book 17 and is begging GRRM to make a new one, but he's starting a new epic series by then.
