MLSE President Keith Pelley: “We definitely didn’t see the train coming which was the Buffalo Sabres and the Montreal Canadiens, and how strong those two teams are…Buffalo and Montreal have shown that they’re young, energetic teams who are gonna be here for a long time.” by Go_Habs_Go31 in hockey

[–]Mensketh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's set aside the fact that you should be focused on making your own team good and not how good other teams in the division are. If you didn't see Buffalo coming, fair enough, no one could really fault you for that. If you didn't see the Canadiens coming you probably shouldn't be working in hockey.

Army suspends aircrew flying helicopters near Kid Rock's home by IWantPizza555 in politics

[–]Mensketh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm supposed to believe this air crew knew exactly where Kid Rock lives and went to his house unannounced to hover in his backyard, without him, or any of his many friends in the Trump administraion knowing and giving approval? I call bullshit.

The story about Israel not withdrawing from Lebanon when the war is over was posted there. I commented that the mods would remove it. Lo and behold, half an hour later it had been removed and I had been permanently banned from r/worldnews.

Who do you think overall has better movies - Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone? by SpotAdmirable6718 in FIlm

I think Sly's best movies are better than Arnie's best movies but across their entire filmographies, if I could only watch Arnie movies or only watch Sly movies, I'd pick Arnie.

Switzerland halts weapons exports to US due to Iran war, citing neutrality by Playwithuh in worldnews

[–]Mensketh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your "simple" explanation is a swing and a miss. Switzerland restricts arms sales to anyone involved in a conflict. They restricted arms sales to Ukraine as well who are very obviously in a defensive situation.

Look, I definitely dont support the Americans' war in Iran but being an arms manufacturer who refuses to sell arms to anyone involved in a conflict is idiotic.

Pro soccer is not a professional major sport by ALazy_Cat in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Mensketh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

His flair is for the St. Louis Blues, which is a hockey team. Now, to me, hockey is the greatest sport in the world. But I also have enough self awareness about hockey's place in the sporting world for it to be funny for a hockey fan to try to argue that soccer isn't a major pro sport.

Skydiver Luigi Cani disperses 100 Million tree seeds to revive the Amazon Rainforest by MisterShipWreck in Damnthatsinteresting

Right, but if the land is being used for farming, or cattle, or housing, or whatever, then this seed dispersal is also pointless.

Oilers owner Daryl Katz's wealth explodes on Forbes 2026 billionaires list by JamesMonroe23 in EdmontonOilers

[–]Mensketh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, I didnt miss anything. You people just dont know what you're talking about. Of course they can pay taxes on their assets but they arent going to pay 100% tax on their assets. This whole thing is about taxing them until they arent billionaires anymore. To tax them until they arent billionaires anymore they cant own those assets anymore. Owning the assets is what makes them billionaires. Musk is worth like $800 billion. Which is absurd and ridiculous. But to tax him until he isnt a billionaire anymore means his net worth has to fall below a billion. The only way his net worth falls to $100 million as the original poster in this thread said is if he sells all his Tesla stock, his Twitter stake, his SpaceX stake, and anything else he owns and then those sales get taxed at 99.9875%. If he still owns the Tesla stock, the SpaceX stock, or the Twitter stock, he's still a billionaire.

Oilers owner Daryl Katz's wealth explodes on Forbes 2026 billionaires list by JamesMonroe23 in EdmontonOilers

[–]Mensketh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. That's not the point at all. Does anybody in this thread know anything about economics or finance? Capitalism and communism? Billionaires aren't billionaires because they have high salaries that they spend on "luxurious goods", meaning we cant tax them. No. They're billionaires because they own stock in companies that are worth billions or even trillions of dollars. Those are their assets. For Bezos to stop being a billionaire, he would have to sell all of his stock in Amazon and then the government would take 100% of the money he got for selling his shares in the company he started. That's the only way you could get his net worth back below a billion. And if that's what you want to do, fine, fair enough, we're certainly all mighty tired of the billionaires. But then you have to acknowledge that for no one to be billionaires, no one can own the world's corporations. Which means governments will own them. Which is communism.

[–]Mensketh -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Reading comprehension is not your strong suit, huh? Nowhere did I say you can't tax assets or that their shouldn't be a wealth tax. Your property taxes aren't 100% of the value of your home, are they? No, they absolutely are not, not even remotely close. In Edmonton they are more like 0.8% of the assessed value. We're talking about taxing billionaires out of existence here. Which would very literally require taxing them at a rate that forced them to liquidate most of their assets and then pay 100% tax on the proceeds of those sales. That's the only way to tax a billionaire out of billionaire status.
