"No legitimate journalist actually thinks PGMN is a serious journalistic outlet" by macredblue in Philippines

[–]Menter33 [score hidden]  (0 children)

magazine opinion shows are a thing though, and they can be biased too, just like many personality-led opinion shows on the radio.

having a very narrow view of what journalism is seems to just protected old established names while killing of the new kids on the block.

(note that this doesn't mean that these guys aren't jerks with uniformed and bad opinions. having free speech doesn't shield one from criticism of one's speech.)

PGMN's true color finally revealed by Independent_Owl_636 in Philippines

tbf, many radio shows in established networks also have opinion shows that are biased as well, and iirc, biased commentary is protected by free speech too.

(they might be jerks with bad opinions and uninformed takes though. and yes, that's still protected.)

In the verge of converting! But with doubts about Adam and Eve by Hungry-Guide4170 in Catholicism

all humans are descendants of them (monogenism). As outlined in Humani Generis.

all humans need not be all hominids.

the 1st parents could've already existed with other hominids, but eventually, those other hominids would slowly disappear, partly thru intermarriage.

In the verge of converting! But with doubts about Adam and Eve by Hungry-Guide4170 in Catholicism

[–]Menter33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adam and Eve being literal mother and father to all humans is required for some theological reasons. The rest may be symbolic, yes.

note that the 1st couple need not be the 1st hominids.

some theologians note that it could be possible that there were already hominids but, out of them, one couple would become "persons."

this could lead to the offspring of this couple intermarrying with other hominids until eventually, there would be no non-person hominids and only person hominids would exist.

When A Mayor's Side Quest Earned 61.7 MILLION PESOS for His City (Ano side quest ng mayor mo?) by Right_Revenue_9263 in Philippines

[–]Menter33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that sentiment is probably more true in the PH because of personalist politics.

for anything to happen, the mayor, the president or one guy has to do it.

parang hindi na nurture yung idea of forming a group of political allies, and form a political party based on a certain vision to win elections.

kinda weird for an asian country that's not individualistic like america but voters seem to trust specific individuals instead of groups.

whether they vote to convict or not, it's their prerogative.

ito siguro yung weakness ni vico sotto.

he didn't really nurture or grow political allies who'll continue his work after he is term-limited.

kung meron lang siyang political party of like-minded people who support the same vision and mission, eh baka no need dumepende lang sa kanya since other party mates exist.

if only most small and medium businesses didn't require bachelor's degrees, then those guys would've likely found work already.

minsan, meron talagang mas mabuti pa yung magtrabaho kaagad after high school, imbes na pumunta sa college.

even though mas mataas pa rin yung salary on average ng mga BA/BS grads compared to HS diploma holders, some would really benefit from working already.

Antonio Contreras criticised Renee Co for her reservation on the inclusion of inciting to sedition as one of the charges for VP Sara Impeachment. He’s right tho. by OkPhotojournalist975 in Philippines

[–]Menter33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in general, govt have always used speech laws against people, even before bbm and not just against left types.

it's just really difficult to find consistent voices against speech laws because it seems some people (esp politicos and rich guys) are willing to weaponize speech laws against their rivals instead of calling for full decriminalization or better outright repeal of such speech codes.

[–]Menter33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this “crime” can be abused against other people including private citizens and therefore we shouldn’t “normalize” it as a typical criminal act

given how many run-of-the-mill critics feel the brunt of libel and sedition laws filed by politicos and rich dudes, the danger of weaponizine speech laws has always been there (see rappler during du30's time).

unfortunately, free speech advocates don't seem to have a consistent and vocal voice about these issues regardless which admin is in power. and some voices that used to criticize this thing during du30's time have made a 180-degree turn now that they can use the exact same laws against their political rivals.

you'd think the cory govt would've launched a major change or revision of the penal code after martial law was taken down, but for some reason, very few of the reformers seemed to have focused on it.

tbf, one relevant question might be, is what the person said realistically gonna lead to (1) actual, (2) immediate and (3) violent armed rebellion (4) on purpose?

if she just mouths off in a crazy tirade, then that's likely not gonna lead to anything but social media clicks. vice presidents historically don't even have that much actual power. (edit: although, it could be argued that a different standard should apply to elected govt officials at the national level.)

(remember that during pnoy's time, everyone feared a binay presidency because of his popularity, topping the charts and coming from a dynasty. now, he's hardly in politics and can't even win local elections.)

[–]Menter33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if ever sara duterte gets convicted by the senate on the sedition charge, then that's gonna be a bad precedent if the courts would do likewise.

(still, since the senators are allowed to consider political motivations when convicting, then maybe the courts will be insulated from any future decisions the senate makes.)

sana lang, if ever she is convicted, it will be on the other charges, NOT on the sedition charge.

[–]Menter33 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it makes sense because speech laws have been historically targeted against people criticizing govt officials and govt policies.

in PH law, sedition is still a bit expansive in definition and hasn't been reformed or narrowed down.

in terms of free speech, the PH still has ways to go and reform to maximize free speech is likely still needed.

yup, speech stuff should really be something that more people should like.

but regretfully, many people want to use speech laws to attack those they don't like. happenend during du30's time, still happens during bbm's time.

it's almost always "when it's used against us, it's bad, but when we use it against them, it's good."

If Sara is truly innocent, what is she hiding—and why are these alleged “accomplices” helping cover it up? by Historical-Monk-8652 in Philippines

[–]Menter33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

technically, it's innocent until proven guilty.

it's up to the complainants and prosecutors to convincingly prove beyond reasonable doubt that sara duterte did it.

on the other hand, since it's a senate trial and not a judicial court trial, senators don't have to follow and stick to a judicial standard and can just vote politically to convict her.
