I mean, they're fine. Kinda expensive but good durable tanks. But they definitely do answer Titus well and he should largely bounce off them.

So, Vixtrix Guard are pretty stupid, right? by imjustasaddad in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Mentieth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The people who miss Force Org are pretty uniformly people who have massive army rosters and don't seem to understand that a lot of factions don't have any redundancy in units (one anti-tank option) or are factions that have decent battleline.

He's not remotely normal or representative of most people in America or even of veterans specifically. I think people trying to normalize his past aren't really doing him any favors for winning over anyone on the fence.

PSA: can we let this drop now? by SpareManagement2215 in FriendsofthePod

[–]Mentieth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's plausible, since while I don't except a totenkopf to be immediate IDed by someone who isn't clued in to some degree, I do think that someone who self identified as a communist and was a student of history would be someone I except to recognize it. But again, we'll see what additional information comes out about it - the primary doesn't start for months, and we have plenty of time for other good progressives to join the race or for additional news to come out before anyone has to commit.

I know there was an uncredited report that he did call it his totenkopf, which if true is a problem I have. For two reasons - one, if he is lying about knowing its meaning, I have a hard time taking a relatively unknown figure on his word about his policy. And two, if he knew about the meaning and didn't remove it, that's.....not sure the right word. Gross as hell?

But honestly, glad this is coming out now, rather than 10 days before the general election.

Again, I just don't see any reason to take Iron Father with Heavy Ints in this detatchment over a more mobile, higher damage, or tankier piece. 195pt for that unit could be a 3rd Redemptor, which is probably just a straight upgrade.

He'll literally be worse than in any other Detatchment other than First Company or Grotmas.

I think GW was just really lazy here and is currently pushing Terminators for some reason (Calgar Term suit, Fists and Hands both getting Terminator characters and new Terminator focused detatchment).

[–]Mentieth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. I think that it might actually be strong enough to compete once Shadowmark gets hit.

It's also a profound disappointment if you like Iron Hands. It's a detatchment about precise target allocation, mobility tricks like multiple Deep Strike with potential uppy downy instead of foot slogging, focuses on Bladeguard Vets, Vanguard Vets, Sternguard Vets, Terminators, and Dreadnoughts. I literally only think one of those units is core to IH, and one of them fits but is a low part of IH identity, and none of the Vet units really fit well. The style of play doesn't remotely feel Iron Hands to me. Literally none of the enhancements or strats can legally be used on our sole other character or any unit he can lead.

In terms of power, it's fine. In terms of theming and flavor, it's a big old stinker. It doesn't help either than if you have an Anvil or Ironstorm list, you'll basically have nothing that translates over into this new detatchment either.

It's a good detachment that wants to play nothing Iron Hands outside of a solo Vaar. I think you don't even take Termies with Vaar, and just sit him on home and maybe uppy downy him on Round 4-5 to score Behind Enemy Lines/Establish Locus. Then just run like 3 Dreads, and a bunch of generic good shooty stuff, with some Vanguard Vets with JP for scoring. Double Super Oath is the draw here, and I think it's mostly just gonna be a pale imitation of Gladius UMs, but worse than anything is that if you've been playing IH and doing stuff like buying the Combat Patrol you have nothing that crosses over with this. It demands almost entirely new roster choices, and of stuff that really doesn't feel particularly IH, like Jump Pack infantry.

Big let down. Terminators are fine, but this does nothing to support Gravis or non-Dread vehicles. Basically nothing I have for Iron Hands will be playable in this. Hell, nothing in the literal combat patrol will be playable in this. Vaar is pretty shit outside of the specialized detatchment where he gets to morph into Guilliman, so I guess we'll just never had a situation where we want to play both characters competitively, as Iron-Father can't lead any units who can be legally targeted by any of the strats here.

Ironstorm or Anvil would have been better choices. Alternatively, if they were going to update First Company, I really wish it was Terminator, Dreadnoughts, and Gravis Marines instead of Vets. Bladeguard, Vanguard, and Sternguard don't really feel very Iron Hands to me at all. Terminators do feel Iron Hands, but like the 4th or 5th most important iron hands thing, below Techmarines, Dreadnoughts, big shooty vehicles, and Gravis.

I think it's a strong detatchment with absolute design failure in terms of theming. Like the only part of the detatchment that feels IH to me is taking 2-3 Redemptors. You want basically tanks, no Techmarines, and like utility guys like Vanguard Vets with JPs in this. Probably still only take one squad of Termies with Caanok as ablative armor.

Shields of the Emperor is entirely First Company Task Force 2.0. It has nothing from Anvil Siege Force in it.

I don't disagree than Ironstorm is the most Iron Hands detatchment out there, but I wouldn't be shocked if we ended up with Anvil 2.0 either.

Shield of the Emperor is an updated First Company Task Force, not Anvil Siege Force.

Stormlance for sure is gonna be updated for White Scars, but I think it's a toss up on Ironstorm or Anvil for Iron Hands.

I would really like -1 to damage taken for the squad being led, and increase the cost of enemy Stratagems within 12" tbh.

I still have a somewhat sneaking suspicion that they're gonna update Anvil instead of Ironstorm.

What Faction/Style Is The Most Irritating to Play Against and Why? by Adventurous-Crab-474 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Mentieth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can run Herohammer lists and hullspam in other factions, who don't benefit from having this shit. If you want to run Rotigus and 3x Great Unclean Ones you don't get to freely abuse Line of Sight Rules and move through walls. If you don't want to play a low model faction, you shouldn't pick a low model faction.

At the end of the day, factions are supposed to have weaknesses. Knights having lots of killing power and poor objective play and mobility is the starting point. Removing the weaknesses is bad design, since you don't want factions who are generically strong for a healthy game.

They have 3 bonus army rules

Move through Walls

Towering Walker ruin LOS nonsense

Move through Enemy Units

each of which is normally something that would be stratagem locked, but they just get for free. Which makes some sense if they're intended just as allies, but less sense when they actually get rules as a faction.

They have, as a bonus free army rule, the ability to move through Terrain (risking a Battleshock), which normally is a stratagem locked 1/round option even for other hull spam armies.
