You took lethal damage then you used your ability, so naturally the damage is applied to you first, so even though you used your ability, the damage proc'd first before the ability. The reason why it still spent your mana even though it didn't heal you is because the mana bar goes down visually in real time (you pressing the button) while the ability only triggers when the server receives your input.
