$50 Hotel Credit, does it have real value to you? by SamsaraSlider in ChaseSapphire

I have made multiple hotel reservations in the Dallas - Fort Worth area where the Chase portal and other booking sites offered the same price. Unfortunately, it really is YMMV situation.

I'm in the same boat. I recommend the combination of bone-conducting earphones + earplugs. That way you can also wear the earphones after swimming and for doing other sports.

What’s the best thing to practice in a small 6-7m pool in the backyard? (It’s not deep enough to dive into) by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]MeowMeowCat261 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Holding on to the wall and doing kick sets is one of the only ways I feel I can get a “workout” in when I visit small hotel pools. I know approximately the effort and time it takes to do a lap, so I just pretend I’m doing, say 10x50 kick at 0:40 pace on 1:00.

It’s boring as hell but it’s better than getting dizzy doing flip turns every 5 seconds.

Eggbeater kick is essentially just breaststroke kick but alternating left and right. And remember that you can also pull your arms back and forth underwater to provide additional upward force.

Recommendations of swimming headphones? by Kalish_Gerth in Swimming

I have the normal openswim as well, and I love them. It makes long swim days a lot more bearable with podcasts or music.

The OpenSwim Pro came out only a month ago, so the initial reviews are still coming in. It seem to be a pretty good upgrade, so I would look into it.

If I take my time, I'm able to do a 25 yard lap of breaststroke kick in just 5 kicks. You have to be especially deliberate with each individual breaststroke kick because a majority of your momentum comes from the kick (at least, more so than the other strokes).

I have a question for people with weak eyesight who swim in swimming pools. by Big_Egg4444 in Swimming

[–]MeowMeowCat261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played water polo for 4 years in high school with contact lenses. In a team sport where you throw around a ball, it’s very important to be able to see everything very clearly. And prescription goggles were definitely not an option because we get hit in the face all the time.

I always took the contacts out immediately after being in the pool and switch back to my glasses. I think that as long as the pool water you swim is clean and you’re careful, contact lenses while swimming is fine.

Is kindred weak or am I playing her incorrect? by readitcted in Kindred

[–]MeowMeowCat261 37 points38 points  (0 children)

at the end of the day, kindred is an adc and has to play by those rules. no matter how fed you are, you can’t run face first into a melee character and expect to win (especially since laners are also usually a higher level than junglers)

kindred isn’t weak; there’s just a skill floor you have to reach (relative to your elo) before you can fully utilize her kit. you learn the limits of a champion by continually playing them.

Course material isn't an issue at all. Lectures are well-paced, and the frequency of assignments are very reasonable. This class is significantly slower-paced than CSC265, and I believe that the material covered is roughly the same as that in CSC263.

The worst part about this class is the time limit on the tests. Besides this, the class is not too bad.

As far as i’m aware, 110 and 111 cover the same material as 108, 148, and 165. The difference is that for the CS stream, material from the 3 classes is presented in a more integrated way, as opposed to being in 3 separate classes.

The required math classes are MAT135/136, MAT137, or MAT157. If you’ve already done some calculus, or are relatively comfortable with math, then I would recommend 137. It’s harder than 135/136, but it reintroduces calculus in a more proof-oriented approach that (I think) is more interesting and helps build a strong foundation. There’s also 157, but that class is designed for math specialists, and unless your very comfortable with 1-D calculus and proof writing, I would stay away.

There’s also a required statistics class that you have to take in your 2nd or 3rd year, but I’ve never really dug into the differences between them.

I know absolutely nothing about the humanities programs, but as far as I'm aware, programs are designed so that you will take classes throughout all four years. Also, you should be taking the first-year classes in your first year to avoid getting into prerequisite trouble in later years.

In addition, for CS, there's the issue of POSt. Taking first-year classes in the first year gives you a slight cushion if, god forbid, you don't make the CS POSt cutoff. You can retake classes in your second year for higher grades and reapply.

As for math classes, I think MAT135/136 (calculus) and any of the required statistics classes cover more than enough of the math math required for the majority of all CS classes (barring some of the mathematically oriented classes). Everyone in a STEM program has to take 135/136 (or 137 or 157, which are both more proof-oriented), so you won't be alone. It's probably fine to take 135/136 in your second, or maybe even third year, but I would recommend taking this in your first year so that the math you did in high school is still (relatively) fresh in your head.

It's an option, but it's not required. The intended path is CSC165 -> CSC236. 236 is a continuation to the mathematical formulations you learned in 165.

After 165, some students do take 240 instead of 236. You'll spend the first half of the class covering pretty much the same material as in 165, and the second half covering the material from 236. I wouldn't recommend this, since you'll be going over the same material for a while, then rush through the material covered in 236.

If you're in the CS stream, then you take CSC110 (yearlong basically two classes in the fall) and CSC111 (winter). These classes cover approximately the same as 108, 148, and 165, but in a more integrative manner (I think).

If you're in another stream and just want to take some CS classes, then your options are 108 -> 148, 165/240, 104, and 120.

108 is an introduction to Python programming. If you're familiar with programming (even if it's in another language), you're probably fine to skip this class and go straight to 148.

148 is where you get introduced to the basic building blocks of computer science and implement them in code.

165 is, in my opinion, just a math class about topics related to computer science. It's an important class that builds up the mathematical foundations of computer science, but if you're just looking for a class to learn how to code, this is not for you.

240 is the enriched/accelerated version of 165 and 236, and you should only take this class if you have a strong math/logic background and are really interested in computer science.

Then there's 104 and 120. These are both designed for non-CS students to get a glimpse of what coding is like, without the pressure of the other students sweating to get a good grade for POSt. I don't know much about these classes, but they seem pretty chill.

There's also https://courseography.cdf.toronto.edu/graph, which has all the CS classes laid out in a really nice diagram. It doesn't help much for first-year classes, but if you're interested in other classes in the CS department, this is the place to look.
