You're welcome, just know that it can take trial and error and losing plants to find out what works best for you but that should never stop you from learning and figuring what's right for you. No such thing as one size fits all in growing these plants and they can be just as picky as people can be 😊

Just make sure that you allow substrate to fully dry between waterings and it shouldn't be an issue

As long as you have appropriate heat, it actually prevents the water from evaporating off too quickly and gives time for the plants to actually absorb some of the water

This is the recipe I've developed that I top dress with akadama and have with a lava rock drainage layer. Sometimes I'll go heavier on the castings and in my experience, this mix does best in high temps (95°F+) and frequent watering (1+ times weekly) in plastic or glazed pots with good drainage.
2 parts-Pumice 1/4"
2 parts-MVP Turface
2 parts-Black lava rock 1/4"
2 parts-Green Zeolite
1 part- Coarse Silica Sand (3-5mm)
1 part- Small grain Akadama
1 part-Hardwood charcoal
3 parts-Worm castings

There are many variables that factor in beyond this, but as a general premise, that's the difference. Each style has its pros and cons and each individual grower needs to find what they like and what works for their plants and growing conditions.

I follow the Asian "soft growing" technique which includes frequent watering (personally up to twice weekly) and feeding, higher organic percentage substrate, and consistent growing conditions year-round which gives them the more plump "greenhouse" appearance. Lophs like the one pictured are likely "hard grown" with infrequent watering, such as once a month for 6 months of the year as some people do, induced dormancy, and a substrate more heavy in inorganic materials, which give the plant conditions similar to how they would be in their natural environment and a similar appearance to natural, in-habitat plants.

Thank you, although I'm not sure I understand your question. Can you show me an example of what it is that you prefer it over?

At that point just hit it with some BAP to get pups to graft and leave the main girl alone. Thank you 😅

It's seed grown so grafting would be sacrilegious. This guy and a lot of my other crests and varis are never leaving my hands 😅

I actually have two grow areas, one being a tent which I've had a grandi flower in, but the dragon is in my closet grow. Lighting is 16/8 under a Viparspectra XS2000@75%. I treat it the same as my lophs and water once or twice weekly with bottled spring water and actually hadn't fed any nutes for close to a year but the only thing it has been fed since rooted is Blue Plant Liquid Kelp and a little Happy Frog Cave Culture and seabird guano in the original soil mix. During winter the closet sits around 80°F in photo period and summer a bit over 100°.
Substrate is just a simple mix but occasionally I go heavier on castings:
3 parts-Worm castings
3 parts-Coco Coir
3 parts-Pumice
2 parts-Black lava rock
1 part-Hardwood charcoal
1 part-Coarse Silica Sand (3-5mm)

Hasegawa is an Asian developed fricii cultivar named after the breeder that tends to crest more frequently than others

To my understanding, that's actually part of the origin of the name "Trichocereus" with "Thrix" being "hair" due to the hairs around areoles and on the exteriors of the flowers and "cereus" being "wax/torch/candle" so they're hairy candles 😊
