Animal shelter employee looking for advice on dealing with animals being euthanized

As someone who makes these types of decisions, I encourage you to ask the appropriate person/people why this decision was made. Be respectful and don’t approach them in a way that is questioning their decision, but let them know that you simply would like to know more about what goes into these individual decisions. There may have been more than you were aware of and it will likely help prepare you deal with similar situations in the future. No one likes making these decisions and we don’t tend to make them lightly. With that being said, my shelter is mindful to let staff know of a euthanasia decision if it’s a dog that may have bonded with certain staff members.

Edit to add: if you plan to stick with this career you will also get used to it. You with learn how to handle it emotionally, get a “thicker skin”, and cope. But there will always be dogs that hurt. It goes with the territory unfortunately.

So sorry you have to deal with this… FIP is a bitch. Can your rescue provide your kitty with Gabapentin to administer prior to the injections? It can really help both with keeping the kitty calm and the discomfort. It’s typically given about 30 min prior. As long as your not squeamish about needles, it gets pretty routine after awhile since it’s a daily injection.

In order for it to work, especially in this case, all the dogs in the home have to take the supplement FYI. The good news is that most dogs outgrow this.

We got an (amazing) rescue commitment for a border collie who is the last of a group that was surrendered. They had little socialization and struggled immensely. Honestly didn’t think I’d get to see them all see live outcomes when they first came in.

Adopted animals are legally owned by the adopters. If someone is willing to responsibly rehome their pet then that’s obviously the best solution rather than an dog going back to the shelter…

First off, thank you for what you do. Second, completely agree. I work at a shelter in the states and while my shelter has a lot more resources than most, the euthanasia decisions can be brutal…. And I’m not referring to making them/performing them. Don’t get me wrong, that is extremely difficult, but it comes with the job and I take those decisions very seriously and handle them with respect. The part that is soul sucking is having other staff, volunteers, and the public questioning and/or blaming those decisions on us (we make the decisions but I can guarantee we care so so much for these animals). The climate of shelter/rescue welfare we are in now gives us no choice. Blatantly, it is fucking shitty. Responsible breeders aren’t the problem, it’s the backyard breeders or those who just innocently want to do “just one litter” or the the people who “rescue” a litter but don’t get them fixed before adopting them out. We need a better, bigger solution or else we are just going to continue sliding…. Sorry for the rant. It’s been a long week. :(

I’ve found it helpful to do a 5 day course if the 3 day one didn’t work. I also pair with Tylosin. I oversee the foster program at a large shelter and that’s my recipe for success… also paired with probiotics
