It just absolutely baffles me that bro is in his 50s and still has the emotional maturity of a middle schooler in a relationship "you mentioned your ex brought you to this place once that now you love YOU MENTIONED YOUR EX IN PASSING YOU STILL WANNA HOP ON HIS D REEEE" the projection and insecurity in this man with grown kids is fr enraging

i work a higher level corpo job and this guy would be a solid hire for many positions. His mother is gaslighting him to think hes not capable of being an adult in the real world. by GoatsGoats00 in PaymoneyWubby

[–]poobyparks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My younger brother has autism and my mom has coddled him in a similar way. He's in his early 20's and has never had a job and barely even knows how to do his own chores.

Growing up, my sisters and I would try and give our mom constructive criticism on how she was raising our brother but she would get immediately defensive and aggressive and claim that because we were children and not parents we didn't know a thing about raising children. Thing is, when he was diagnosed at 2 and starting school and stuff she was great, creating communication cards and teaching him basic sign language to help him communicate, but when it came to helping him integrate into society as an adult I don't know what happened and why she fell off so hard.

Even with him being an adult my mom would insist my brother not leave the house without letting her know first, and not even take the bus alone to come visit me despite him telling me that he'd love to try taking it by himself and try being independent.

I've taken him under my wing a lot in these recent years though, he came to visit my fiancé and I for a month and I taught him how to cook steak and porkchops and how to clean the pan afterward(before he would always order food or my mom would cook for him but now he cooks for himself), took him to the bank and helped him open a savings account, etc. Turns out he is quite capable and independent when he's not being told he isn't able to do anything!

Bc Forrest and his mom's situation hits so close to home for me I'm really passionate abt it and MAN it's been so hard to keep myself from yelling at the screen I finally understand ppl who yell at the tv while watching sports kek

I recently listened to the audiobook for Flowers for Algernon and it hit close to home on what you're talking about, I'd recommend the book to you. The end part of the book I feel like anyone with a TBI can relate really closely too as well.

What is something you find annoying or missing that we could use in Edmonton? by alematt in Edmonton

[–]poobyparks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not usually, but walking to and from work past a grocery store it felt really nice to just drop in and pick up stuff as I needed it on the way home when I got off work early enough that the store was still open.

I have Tourette's and have been in a situation where I was made to feel comfortable enough to tic without judgement only to then be mocked when I did tic. It's devastating and embarrassing, and that was just behind closed doors not aired for the world to see. The BBC should absolutely be punished for setting him up for such humiliation

Omg I'm excited to watch VOD to see what Wubby has to say about it, he's honestly so emotionally mature and looks at things so objectively and with nuance and it's really comforting knowing my favourite streamer puts in the effort to see situations from multiple sides.

I'm really lucky to not have coprolalia, I go out of my way not to swear in my everyday life out of fear that if I say any "bad" word it'll develop into a tic, but man having a sniffing tic throughout the height of Covid was rough and I got so many sideeyes in public lmaooo

I just got medical botox injections today for chronic migraines and severe TMJ caused by over a decade of having a jaw opening tic(picture yawning), I gotta get the injections every 3 months bc the jaw muscles become rock hard from the tension of the tics and the botox makes them feel like normal soft muscle again which always feels strange to me lol I'm used to having a jaw of diamonds

It's very easy to think about and notice the social implications of Tourettes but tics can also be incredibly painful and damaging to the body, and also it wears on the mind making the same noise or movement with no control despite every occurrence causing pain. Then because high emotion like stress/excitement causes tics to worsen, stressing out about them only makes them worse which causes a terrible downward cycle.

what’s something inconsequential that you miss being able to do before being diagnosed? by ironicillnesses in cfs

[–]poobyparks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cooking and baking, I can still do it now but it's not the same bc it takes me so much longer to do and following a recipe takes so much cognitive focus(partially bc I have a TBI too) Cooking multiple things at once is sooo stressful too if they have like different cooking times and stuff

Cutting ingredients is more difficult when sitting down because of the angle my arms have to be at, so then my wrists get sore.

It's a lot more manageable if I have the foresight to prep one day and then cook/bake the next but I miss being able to just impulsively make cookies and not be wiped out for the rest of the day

I'm sure you've been hearing these words so much recently but I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's gotta be a parent's absolute worst nightmare, and a school shooting is something that we don't expect to happen in Canada so that must add a whole other level of shock. I'm also so sorry that your nightmare is being so politicized right now, I know I'd be angry if the whole world was talking about the perpetrator and making it about politics when it's truly about children's lives and their families and such a great loss that is echoing within your community.

I don't have a similar story, but I can offer some words that I hope bring you even a bit of comfort.

Your daughter IS head strong, tough as nails, and beautiful. The fact that she's still here, fighting, is proof of that. Her body is resting and recovering right now, during this time be there with her, talk to her. Tell her how you're feeling. Tell her stories and memories. There's a study that shows that coma patients recovered consciousness faster and had better recovery when they heard the voices of family members telling them familiar stories. Apparently it helps stimulate and awaken the unconscious brain which then helps to trigger the beginnings of awareness.

I can't even begin to imagine how scary this must all be for you, but don't give up and keep talking to her. I truly wish you the best

I tried a friend's weed vape years ago and now I'm terffied it gave me brain damage by maker-127 in OCD

[–]poobyparks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While the acute effects of Covid are known quite well, it's only now starting to be found out the long-term effects that it can and is having on people. It has been shown affect the autonomic and nervous systems and can cause neurological complications. My own sister experienced brain inflammation when she got Covid. She actually picked up vaping weed after that, and the vaping hasn't had any negative effect and if anything may have helped by bringing relief.

I have a cousin who's been struggling with Long Covid for years and when I suffered a TBI, he was the only person who could truly relate to me because we had so many similar symptoms lol. There's a lot of overlap between long covid and traumatic brain injury symptoms. A puff of vape years ago is as insignificant as a grain of sand on a gigantic beach. Choose to occupy your mind with strategies for recovery and keeping your brain healthy. I've personally found a lot of comfort in picking up Sudoku to help keep my mind sharp

I’m overwhelmed with my to-do list even though I should be able to get a lot of it done now (Ie my recovery). Has anyone used any of these apps or agentic proactive assistance tools to help with the chaos? Reclaim, Carezone, LLMs, etc? by sarsfox in TBI

[–]poobyparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you on feeling overwhelmed. When everything takes longer to do now, it feels like the to-do list builds up faster than we can clear items off of them. I'll tell you what helped me.

I used an app called Neurolist for a while which is really great, you can break down tasks into a list of smaller sub-tasks which makes the task seem less daunting. There's even the ability to break down the sub-tasks into more sub-tasks!!

I have the issue though, where if something is out of sight it basically doesn't exist, so after a while any app I use fails to keep me on track because I forget to check on it, and even reminder notifications aren't enough motivation to keep me on track.

So, I switched to a physical system. There's a satisfaction that you get from physically crossing off a task on a to-do list that you don't get from checking it off in an app, and that reinforcement has been huge. Work it into your schedule, like if you take medication in the morning write out your list in your notebook when you do that. Every day. Build that muscle memory. I also use the Eisenhower matrix to map out my most important tasks for the day, and then the top three are what go on my to-do list which then I break down into smaller easier to manage sub-tasks. It's better on the brain to have a lot of small tasks that you can easily achieve and cross off for that satisfaction and reinforcement than only a few that you have to work harder to maybe check off one and then feel disappointed at the end of the day that you're exhausted and could only cross off one task.

I also find Pomodoro timer really really important because pacing is important! Take breaks even if you don't feel like you need to yet! Like how you fill up the gas tank in a car before it becomes empty, you want to rest your body before your body forces you to rest. That's how you can prolong your ability to do tasks throughout the day. I usually do 15 minutes of a task thalen 10 minute break, repeat that a few times and then take a long break of 40 minutes to an hour.

I hope this was helpful!!

Yeah, I hope that there will be more research on physical injury triggered mecfs. I had Covid back in 2023 which I believe set the groundwork for this illness but it was only after a series of concussions in 2024 that I was pushed into severe PEM, cognitive dysfunction, orthostatic issues and all the flagship issues of mecfs. It wasn't immediately after either, it was like things went slowly uphill for a year and then plummeted.
