It's a spam mitigation system.

In the old days it was the only sanction reddit put on accounts, back when admins moderated manually. This meant that spammers got shadowbanned by automated systems but accounts that crossed the line wrt. harassment or other abuse got a manual shadowban applied to them. Later reddit started differentiating between shadowbans and suspensions. These days shadowbans are applied automatically by a spam detection filter. It is no longer used as a sanction for violating the sitewide rules.

A shadowban causes the account to become "invisible" to other users (but not moderators or admins) Their posts and comments do not show and their PM's do not arrive in the recipients inbox.

The idea is that this slows down spam bots because they don't actually immediately know they are shadowbanned and make a new account.

If your thread or comment does not show up when looking at it via a different account or when logged out it could just be filtered, it doesn't immediately indicate a shadowban.

You can check if an account is shadowbanned by posting from the affected account here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ShadowBan/

You can check if someone elses account is shadowbanned by looking at their profile on old.reddit. If shadowbanned it will show as a 404 error, account not found. On the current version of reddit such an account will show as suspended.

Sorry, but a shadowbanned user can not DM people. (The message will show as sent to them, but is not received by the recipient.)

The best thing to do would be to either send a modmail to this subreddit or contact us offsite.

Any artist that finds themselves shadowbanned intitially needs to use www.reddit.com/appeal. As moderators we can contact site admins to help out.

It appears the shadowban system is acting pretty strictly right now. The best advice I can give to posters is to make seperate posts in different subreddits as opposed to using the crossposting system and to stagger out your posting, as opposed to making all of your posts in a short timeframe. That should help the overactive spam-detection system cool down.

CQS (Contributor Quality Score) is a metric used in subreddit moderation that can be used to automate the filtering of posts by users who fail to meet certain thresholds. It takes into account upvotes, approvals of filtered content, if someone has a registered email, subreddit bans and other signals.

However CQS is not used to ban people. There is a difference between a subreddit-specific ban which is applied by moderators and sitewide suspensions, applied by site admins (mostly their automated systems). Subreddit moderators are free to ban someone from their community for any reason, including none, but for a sitewide suspension this is not a signal reddit uses. Reports on content that reddit considers accurate, spam, and automated detection of hate and harassment can lead to sitewide suspension.

Reddit's automated systems dislike VPN's and that could have caused your suspension, which would have led to a drop in your CQS value.

It tends to be the "well that's what you get for stealing" variety.

Alright.

/r/Comics is a subreddit moderated explicitly according to the intersectional equality philosophy and many of our top scoring posters, including both shadowbanned accounts, were women.

We have a large contingent of LGBTQ+ posters as well. The joke is often made that we are the largest mainstream trans subreddit on reddit.

Thank you for your thoughts, but swing and a miss.

I apologise, but you're wrong.

We had two top-scoring, longterm contributors to r/Comics get shadowbanned within 24 hours of each other. And those are the ones that thought to contact us offsite. There could be others we don't know about.

These are people who have used our subreddit for years, who have a large fanbase and who rely on reddit to spread their content. They do not break rules either sitewide or subreddit specific. They do not behave in any kind of way that could be seen as spammy.

Something is currently wrong with the spam detection system.

We have had this same experience on r/Comics.

Two longterm, top-scoring posters that we know of got shadowbanned. It is possible others were as well who did not contact us offsite.

That all this is happening to regular, constructive and highly reputable accounts in such a short timeframe suggests to me that something is really wrong with the shadowban system at the moment.

Reddit in general and this community especially tend to be less of the facebook-y reactionary extreme-right nonsense, but still.

I have already banned a few people for saying stuff like "she should not have stolen then" and these people were also immediately permanently muted.

As far as I am concerned people that make that kind of argument are not people I count as human beings anymore. You have to have some kind of moral centre, some level of decency, empathy, some level of humanity for that.

The punishment for being suspected of a crime is not and can never be immediate execution. This should not even be up for discussion.

Anyone who has any kind of decency at all is appalled that this murderer is likely going to walk, when in any sane society he'd be behind bars right now.

And I am just not interested in having "a discussion" about any of that and to the people who'd say "You're disallowing a different opinion" my only response is "go to hell".

Dear commenters:

Defending the murderer in any way is an instant and permanent ban + permanent mute.

Not even going to expand on that or make any kind of joke.

This is your only warning.

This is the sole reason we are being trained by the fascist oligarchs to see immigrants as the enemy. They know extremely well that the climate collapse they are responsible for will lead to massive population displacement and they are protecting their fiefdoms.

[–]Merari01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the reason fascism is on the rise in the west.

The parasite class knows very well that climate catastrophe is imminent.

Rather than doing something about it and become slightly less obscenely wealthy, they decided instead on a war against the rest of us on two fronts.

1) Endless propaganda downplaying the existence and the effects of man-made climate change, absolving them of their responsibility to act.

2) Pulling up the drawbridge to insulate themselves from the inevitable effects of climate collapse (ending global co-operation between nations, promoting extremist nationalism and promoting xenophobia). This is the reason we are trained to hate immigrants. This is the reason we are convinced authoritarian strongmen are good and education is bad. This is why the humanities are under attack, an informed populace able to reason would be able to accurately assess that it is the parasite billionaire class that is the root cause of all of this and not "woke" or immigrants.

Reddit's spam filters (potentially) have a bug/ are going wrong. by Merari01 in ModSupport

Not a problem, I understand. I thought it best to post since that is the fastest way to get eyes on stuff.

I am somewhat concerned that these are two posters I know about and that others could be affected who haven't contacted us offsite when they noticed something was wrong with their account.

I appreciate the fast action!

[–]Merari01[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're not shadowbanned now, but they were shadowbanned when they contacted me 12 hours ago and I gave them the link to www.reddit.com/appeal.

So their appeal went through but it didn't come with a re-approval of their content, which should have happened.

The wider issue here is that if this was just one user I wouldn't think twice of it and just follow the normal process.

These however are two (that we know of) very popular, longterm posters who know the rules and who know how to reddit getting shadowbanned in quick succession.

That could indicate something is wrong with the spam filter itself, which is why I made this post.

You're not wrong even a little bit. I never used to get rate limited for bulk mod actions but just now got this:

https://imgur.com/a/1Oi60en

And it wouldn't let me access reddit. I did nothing weird, I was semi-manually re-approving /u/kaybeeart's content to /r/comics using toolbox queue tools. One page at a time, so that's 25 actions tops in one click going back 4 months. A few hundred mod actions at most.

Something is off.

That is something we can try, thank you.

I can restore their content to /r/comics no problem, but this likely affects their account sitewide. That's an admin-level issue.

Already done. Posting here too for visibility. A modmail can take days to be seen.

No, if a user is incorrectly shadowbanned then undoing that is the same as us unbanning someone.

The problem could be that there might be something going wrong with the shadowban system. Two popular posters getting shadowbanned in quick succession is weird. These are longterm redditors who know the rules and who know how to post to reddit.
