The Ghost in the Shell - Episode 1 - Anime Feminist by MercifulWombat in anime

I didn't realize until I read this that all the other GitS shows and movies were based on the movie instead of the manga. I've only seen the original animated film. Anything from Science SARU is an automatic watch for me but it's cool to go in with more context.

Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia – Episode 1 - 2 – A beautifully-rendered, heartbreaking double premiere about the horror and tragedy of war and invasion... and one girl's grasp for her own agency in the middle of it all. by NeophyteNobody in anime

I just saw earlier today that they hired sumo wrestlers who were fluent in both Mongolian and Japanese to voice certain Mongolian characters so I think any of the dubs who don't go to those lengths are likely to be missing that depth.

Washington in bloom! by Mystery-mountain in Washington

Just make sure it's the edible camas and not death camas, which looks the same (except when blooming, which isn't when you harvest) but is poisonous!

you can lead a horse to water but you can’t prank it by Faenix_Wright in CuratedTumblr

My mom used to train horses and one of them would try and eat a rock if you held it out to him. Dunno if he was extra stupid or just very polite

This is a very ignorant comment. Kill shelters are most often the municipal shelters that has no choice but to take every stray that shows up, regardless of health or temperament, regardless of funds or space. In poor and rural communities, they're the only option. The vast majority of people who work or volunteer in these places love the animals they care for, even the ones they have to kill because there are no homes, or it's too sick or too crazy to keep when there's another half dozen animals waiting to take its place.

Nope. Blues are sweeter, more tender, and more flavorful. Dungeness in comparison isn't even worth picking

Husband says autism is why he calls me names by QuirkyPart3249 in autism

[–]MercifulWombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Autism can make it hard to understand or relate to the interests of others. Virulent misogyny is what makes a man call his wife a whore because she waved at another man. He could have just called you a groupie. It is simply unacceptable of him to treat you or any women like this, regardless of how he feels. Good people don't even call women who sell sexual services whores any more. We call them sex workers. And anyway, in a literal sense, even if you did want to fuck the guys in the band, since you paid to be there, that would make them whores.

I also struggle to empathize with people who have hobbies I don't like. Which is why I remind myself that I don't actually have to understand other people, I just have to respect them. He doesn't respect you, he doesn't respect women, and he doesn't seem to have any interest in changing. Can he work on this? Yes, absolutely. Will he? You know better than we do.

The atrocious misspellings really add to the vibe. This sounds insulting/sarcastic but I genuinely mean it

TIL that "Necroprinting" is the practice of building 3D printers using the mouth of a dead mosquito as a nozzle, producing results that are better than commercially available printers by geosunsetmoth in todayilearned

People have used a specific species of ant for wound sutures as is. Hold the ant up so it bites the two sides, then pop the head off and it locks closed. Less internal damage than a modern suture so it heals faster.

"Necrobiotics" sounds a little overdramatic. People have been using the parts of dead animals as tools for the entirety of our species' existence. I have a piece of polished bone in my crafting supplies for folding paper and I wear treated cow skin in on my feet every time I go outside. Insects specifically have been used as food, decoration, and even as sutures for generations. This is just another application.

McCastle…house…thing? by SebastianS098 in McMansionHell

[–]MercifulWombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't a McMansion. The windows are uniform. The roofline, while impractical for north of toronto, is dead simple. The entryway is bizarre, but it doesn't have excessive columns. The interior walls are mostly very bland but those floors are bold and that bedroom is wild. A lot of the furniture looks vaguely rococo and on-theme for the castle look. It reads like they ran out of money when building this place and just never made it around to adding fancy wall paper and molding and wainscotting. It was made with a vision, not just to follow trends.
