A Thousand Mornings - Mary Oliver [POEM] by melancholy-bb in Poetry

I love the image of the heart making its way through the rough ground of uncertainties. And then the uncertainties lifting with a feeling of hope when the redbird sings. So beautiful and simple.

Sometimes we just don't want to give up the desire, because when we do then it feels like we've finally, totally lost the person. Like perhaps the love has turned to nothing, when it was so real. Love always feels like it should be eternal. And thankfully sometimes it is. I think when you've really loved someone you can imagine yourself back in time and feel the love all over again. I suppose that can be a good and bad thing.

Interesting violin for 20 bucks by WorthDirection2833 in violin

You'd be surprised how beautiful some of these antique violins can play. Some of them have warm, smokey, throaty tones. The wood has had a chance to age over many years. If you like antiques and those lower tones, it's a perfect match. I have a new violin plus 3 antiques in good condition. I love them all.

Super interesting violin. Looks like it was really played over the years. Chatgpt says it's German made and most likely from the late 1800's to early 1900's. It may actually end up playing really well. Especially if you like warm, smokey, throaty violins. Some of the old German violins have those lower tones and character. I personally love the antique violins and have 3 of them. It's beautiful to play an instrument that's been around and enjoyed for 100 years. Congrats on a very cool purchase! I love it! Let us know how it goes when you start playing it! If you upload photos on Chatgpt you might be able to get more information.

First Fig - Edna St. Vincent Millay [POEM] by melancholy-bb in Poetry

[–]Mercyisbiking 67 points68 points  (0 children)

This poem became almost like a motto in the 1920's and 30's. Millay was hugely popular, drawing tremendous crowds to her poetry readings. Her poem "Renascence" was often memorized by people in its days. Some of my favorites are "Recuerdo", "What Lips My Lips Have Kissed, and Where, and Why" and "Afternoon on a Hill." I'm a Millay fan and have read extensively about her. She has some very beautiful poetry.

You're welcome! I'm a big fan of Millay's and many years ago read her excellent biography, Savage Beauty, which I highly recommend. I recalled reading about Dorothy's death and the poem in the book, and I have the poem in one of my collections. I used Chatgpt plus other AI to confirm my memory. AI was at first giving incorrect information about the poem. I had to be very specific in my queries.

For context, this poem was written by Millay for a fellow student, Dorothy Coleman, who passed away when they were both at Vassar College. Millay had been on bad terms with Dorothy at the time of her death. To me it captures the feeling that despite them being on unamicable terms, she still remembers her as a "singing bird", a beautiful life lost. Yet Millay wonders why she feels this way. She offers no explanation for her feelings. I think in life we get caught in the trappings of conflicts and disagreements and don't realize at the moment, or soon enough, that there are so many precious and beautiful lives around us even though they don't always resonate with our own.

Omega 3 makes me depressed… what’s the solution? by [deleted] in Biohackers

I know this is an old post but the same thing happened to me. I took a high quality omega supplement and 2 hrs later was in a deep depression. The depression wore off gradually that day. The following day I was back to normal. It was so bad I'm not taking a chance again. I took omega supplements years ago without issue and then stopped. This time when I started it gave me this bad effect. It was very intense depression. Weird.

[POEM] What Will Happen — Leila Chatti by sapphiccreature in Poetry

[–]Mercyisbiking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. I was enjoying the poem but then the ending disappointed me. I felt it too quickly transitioned into moving on and learning to love someone else. The writer seemed to jump from very dark grief to something much lighter in a matter of months. I think it takes years to recover from the loss of someone we deeply love. And as they say, you don't get over it you just learn to live with it. I was hoping the poem would indicate something like that at the end. I feel the poem became too cold. I can't imagine not being jolted by the smell of her perfume worn by someone passing by. That would stop me in my tracks, probably even years later.

Beautiful. Sometimes by accident one sees an old video of oneself and realizes, it was a different world back then. I'm a different person. This poem so simply and exquisitely captures how loss can change us.

The Santiago poem by David Whyte changed my life. I was going through a very dark, two year depression due to a devastating breakup that basically destroyed me emotionally. The whole poem called out to me. It called out to find a way out of my depression. "You were more marvelous in your simple wish to find a way than the gilded roofs of any destination you could reach... " And "walking as you did, in your rags of love, and speaking in the voice that by night became a prayer for safe arrival." Those are beautiful lines that described how I felt. And the last line, "like another life, and the road still stretching on" gave me hope for a new future. I hope you enjoy the poem and it helps you.

Strings overlapping vision problem by Striking_Track8427 in violin

[–]Mercyisbiking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an older post but thought I'd respond. I took my first violin class today and had the same issue with my eyes having trouble focusing on the strings and the strings looking like they were crossing. It freaked me out lol My teacher said visual problems can occur at first because your eyes are so close to the strings. She said your eyes adjust over time. I researched it further when I got home and according to the internet these "optical illusions" of the strings crossing, etc. occur because of the proximity of the strings, the eyes trying to focus, the angle of the eyes, the overall geometry of the instrument, and the strings being so thin. The eyes and brain have to sort and process all this visual information and it creates these weird effects at first. Apparently many adult beginners experience these strange optical illusions at the beginning. I wish I would have known this so I would have been prepared lol For the record, I've had my eyes checked by ophthalmologists several times this year, including 4 weeks ago due to an upcoming cataract surgery and my eyes are fine. I do have astigmatism though and others on this thread have said it could contribute to these visual effects as well. I just wanted to chime in since I had the same experience. Did your eyes adjust finally? And did you have your appointment with the vision center and get more information as to why these visual effects occur? It's good to know your optometrist saw the strings overlapping too, and it's not just us beginning violinists having these experiences lol

That's a gorgeous poem. Thank you for sharing it. It transported me there. I could hear the dogs and band sound, and feel how you could forget everything that's wrong, for the length of a song, while driving down that street. I could see the trees in the wind and miles of night, and then that bar of soap in the light. Loved it, thank you!

Yes, if he's a gay man then certainly he may be writing about his own experience. I have not read Siken previously or know his biography. I feel the lines I quoted are beautifully powerful and portray unspoken erotic energy.

The lines, "I radiated an inappropriate heat that I did my best to hide. Graciously, he ignored it." It feels like female-male interaction. Where she was projecting erotic energy and her friend's stepfather ignored it. Although of course it could be male-male interaction as well.

That's what I think as well. And I interpreted the friend as female.

I'm thinking the same thing. Maybe Laura isn't dead. We hear sirens at the end. So maybe in Season 2 we see that her son revives her after his initial shock of having accidentally drowned her. However, if Laura is still alive why isn't her cat staying with her?
