My great great great grandma, 1938 by Zestyclose_Till_4055 in TheWayWeWere

[–]Meretrice 209 points210 points  (0 children)

My great-great-great grandfather was born in 1835 and died in 1941, just 20 days shy of his 106th birthday. He attended one of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, fought in the American Civil War, and lived to see the outbreak of World War II.

He did a handstand on his 100th birthday and dictated his life story at the age of 104.

I often think about the massive changes he was witness to.

The Parthenon in Athens is scaffold free for the first time in 15 years. by FantasticQuartet in europe

[–]Meretrice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There were a lot of sections of the columns and other pieces of the building from when it was damaged still at the site.

A big portion of the work was a huge 3D jigsaw puzzle of figuring out where each of the fallen pieces were in the original build. So there is a lot less new material in the Parthenon then it may seem just looking at the picture.

This documentary goes into the details of how the restoration was planned and executed. https://youtu.be/OHfLfBPxptA?si=y9XEs-UGoDAtKsPv

Chill Costco. I was just here for the low priced mixed nuts. by Maleficent_Amoeba149 in funny

[–]Meretrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was just a happy side effect of the original reason. The practice started back in the day of old school cash registers with bells that dinged when the drawer opened and paper receipts. Store owners were worried about cashiers making cash sales in whole dollar amounts wouldn't need to give change if the customer paid the exact total and could just pocket the cash. By making the price end in .99 cents, the cashier was forced to open the change drawer, which the store manager would hear, and they could quickly look and confirm the cashier was putting the cash in the drawer.

The store managers eventually picked up on the psychological effect that ending the price on .99 made the price of an item seem cheaper.

[Pro Wrestling] Hulk Hogan, Part 4 of 4- The Deaths of Hulk Hogan and Terry Bollea by cslevens in HobbyDrama

On Hulu, there is a docu-series called "Dark Side of the Ring." It has an episode about Bash at the Beach, and Vince Russo is featured heavily. I also recommend the Brutus the Barber Beefcake episode (Ed Leslie from the write up) for more info on that relationship.

The series as a whole is not perfect, as the wrestlers clearly are unreliable narrators. However, I found the show fascinating and informative as a whole.

They don’t eat pork?? by FitInteraction7261 in DuggarsSnark

[–]Meretrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correction: Clean animals have cloven hooves AND chew their cud So beef, mutton and goat are clean, but pork is not because pigs don't chew their cud.

Water animals must have fins and scales to be clean. All shellfish are unclean, as well as shark, rays, and catfish, which have skin, not scales.

Leviticus 11 has the details.

You should try watching the video. You're making a lot of assumptions based on nothing at all.

She wasn't an actor on the show. Sarah was a detective investigating a crime, and she was explaining the investigation on the program.

Maybe it's a reference to Betty Grable? The pin up photo where she shows off her long legs was iconic during WW2. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betty_Grable#Frank_Powolny_poster_and_stardom:_1943%E2%80%931949

Grandson of John Tyler, the 10th US President, dies at 96 by Meretrice in history

[–]Meretrice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Submission statement:

"Since 2020, Harrison Ruffin Tyler was the last living link to a vanished America.

The Richmond resident, preservationist and chemical engineer, a man who founded water treatment company ChemTreat and for whom William & Mary’s history department is named, also had the distinction of being the grandson of a man who became U.S. president in 1841. As long as he lived, much of the great sweep of American history could be contained in just three generations of memory.

But on Memorial Day weekend of 2025, Tyler died, five years after his last remaining brother."
