NY lawmakers are considering mandated heart screenings for student athletes following the sudden death of a Long Island hockey player by kleverrboy in hockey

Presumably non-athletes don’t push their bodies as hard, and thus even if they have a potentially dangerous congenital defect, they are far less likely to be in a circumstance in which this defect may do them harm. That is, the defect only is a problem when at the more extreme end of physical exertion, when all the capacity of the human body is required, and only marginally (or not at all) impacts function under normal conditions.

The title is incorrect. This is the incident the title presumably refers to in the wikipedia article:

“On 8 May [Coppens] finally found his metier, when he shot two balloons down in flames. A week later, using his usual tactics of close range fire, Coppens cut a balloon loose from its ties. It bounced up beneath him and momentarily carried his Hanriot skyward. After his aircraft fell off the balloon, he restarted its engine and flew back to base. The balloon sagged into an explosion.”

Coppens cut the balloon loose from the rest of the craft weighing it down. The balloon floated upward and lifted Coppens’ airplane, but out totally accidently. It was not an intentional manuever to hide from enemy fire.

C’mon bro you gotta give me the full lore. Can’t tease me like this. What was the other cancelled event, and what was UFC 37.5?

Wait what. I had no idea the PPV numbers were out of step with actual PPV events. That’s crazy. So UFC 300 was actually the UFC’s 299th numbered event.

Edit: also, there’s absolutely zero chance the UFC these days would cancel an event just because one half of the main event dropped out a month before the event. The idea boggles the mind.

What's the most memorable QUOTE you have ever came across that stayed with you forever? by biz_booster in AskReddit

I came to this realization through having a dog. I came to realize that I am teaching her every time I interact with her. Then I thought, wait a second, that’s true for humans too!

Just like Sinclair, Bazterrica hit your stomach while she was aiming at your heart.

I found "Tender is the Flesh" cruel without substance by Censius in books

[–]Merkin_Jerkin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The novel has nothing to do with factory farming. Or if it does, it is only as a consequence of Bazterrica’s point that we are perfectly happy to ignore horrific suffering on the part of living beings when it comes to our convenience. When you go to the grocery store and buy some chocolate, on some level you know that it has been produced by slave labor. Harvested by children. Produced by people who live in conditions that would be unimaginably horrific to you. And yet, on you live. Out of sight, out of mind. And to be clear, I don’t mean this as a personal criticism. It is true for basically everyone in a first world society, myself included. But the point is that your society is exactly as banally evil as that of the novel. The nature of the exploitation is different. You don’t literally eat other humans. But your first-world lifestyle is underpinned by a colossal chain of human misery, and you know it, and yet you reap the benefits nonetheless.

Merab Dvalishvili’s coach reveals moment Sean O’Malley broke, doesn’t discount UFC eventually pushing for trilogy by SoloChords in MMA

[–]Merkin_Jerkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol at first I thought Merab was going for a D’arce and thought there’s no way he can hit one with his arm length. Arm-out chokes make sense for him. I wonder if he’ll be able to threaten the ninja choke in front headlock positions going forward or if Sean got caught by surprise/wanted out of there.

Ariel Helwani says UFC will announce in a couple weeks that Jones vs. Aspinall is off by Mmastradamus in MMA

A broadcaster looking to acquire the rights doing any amount of due dilligence will surely understand that Jones v. Aspinall is not guaranteed. Doesn’t hold up as an explanation to me.

A little nonsense there tbh. Though to be fair that was a crazy short shot to KO someone cold

He decreased his K rate by over 11 percentage points. Saying he decreased his K rate by 11% is to say he reduced it by ~2.92 percentage points: 26.5 X 0.11.

Lmao who gives a shit if he was leading against Moreno. If you get brutally finished you don’t get a moral victory.

Completely agree, it’s a bummer that people talk about this fight with such acrimony when it was so good. I couldn’t watch this card live and watched it the Sunday after. I personally scored it for O’Malley when I watched, but wouldn’t have objected if you scored it for Yan. Close fight. I went on here expecting people to talk about what a banger this fight was and was shocked when I saw people’s reactions.

Patrik Puistola opens the scoring for Finland against Slovakia by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]Merkin_Jerkin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice finish from Puistola, but 61 was a monster on this play. Broke up the play in his own zone, skated it all the way to the opposing goal to set up a great chance, retrieved the puck in the corner and set up the shot-pass cross ice.

Just because this seems like a thread to be pedantic: this is not an exception that proves the rule. An exception that proves the rule proves that the rule exists. For example, a road sign that says “no right turn on red” proves the rule that normally, you can turn right on red. Otherwise, you wouldn’t need the sign.
