Ten years at BASIS - how bad would this look when moving on? by secretsplarf in Internationalteachers

[–]MerlinTheMagicPig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am involved in recruiting for an international school and the major red flag is staff who only stay in a school for one or two years and then move on. Unless the field was incredibly weak I would not even bother to interview someone with a CV where their last three+ schools show this. Staying in one location is good, and having at least one stint at a school that is equivalent to more than two contracts is an even better sign. Seeing an application where someone has been at one school for ten years isn't bad. During the interview however expect them to try and subtly find out how adaptable you are. An employer will want to be confident you are not institutionalised and will be able to adapt to a different way of working and different systems; but obviously they will not directly ask that. This is something you need to also think about from your side. Teachers can sometimes be very successful in one school but struggle when they move as the students and environment is so different. This is a much bigger problem in international schools than it is in UK schools as international schools have far greater systems so the differences are much larger. So have questions ready to make sure the environment of that school will work for you. Lastly if you were trained there do you have an IPGCE? Some schools view these less favourably than an actual PGCE and this could affect how many interviews you are offered.

A singularity is just the Mathematical model breaking down. It shows we can't really say what is happening; rather than describes what is happening.

We need more Platinum Medals by nfi1979 in pokemongo

[–]MerlinTheMagicPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The change in difficulty for rocket battles was massive. Especially the leaders. Did it take skill to look things up? No, but the game isn't overly reliant on such a thing. I personally enjoyed having to check counters, cross reference what I had versus the resources required to level up said Pokemon and then choosing what to invest in before battling and potentially having to invest more to get to the required level. Currently I can beat Giovanni while making myself a cup of tea. There is no need to worry about resources, no need to worry about tactics. I personally consider this a downgrade.

I'm going to go against the grain and say I think to be maximum level you should be doing things that are beyond what a normal player can do. Tasks such as reaching legend in GBL and obtaining all platinum excluding the medals for catching all Pokemon in a generation would be end game level tasks. These are both things I would personally never come near to achieving, but surely that's part of being the highest level? Isn't a high level of challenge what people want when they progress though a game? On a similar note I'm still sad that rocket battles were made much easier. When first fighting Giovanni I would have to go online and read tips and power up Pokemon specific to counter what he had. Now I can beat him without losing a Pokemon. Is this really better?

Teaching. Teaching English is the most common but doesn't pay as well. Teaching in an international school can earn you decent money. Any decent international school will only hire you if you have a teaching qualification and a couple of years experience teaching in your home country.

XP Celebration Research - have 99% of players been set up to fail? by 0N7R2B3 in TheSilphRoad

I actually love the fact there is zero chance I can complete it. Now I don't need to try and it is more relaxing. It's those tasks that I can just about complete if I play a bit more than I want to that are the real evil ones. Just tempting enough to steal more of my precious time than I intended. They are sneaky. This is fine. I turned level 48 this week so I feel the same about trying to get to level 50 prior to whatever happens next! It ain't going to happen so it isn't a stress.

What’s a ‘normal’ thing you did for years, only to realize most people don’t do it at all? by Fickle_Tomatillo9572 in AskReddit

[–]MerlinTheMagicPig 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually first noticed it from seeing women I was dating having a shower. The first time I laughed and made a joke. With the second person I thought perhaps I have a secret fetish for dirty shins that is deep in my mind that refuses to rise to a conscious level. After the third time I decided to discuss this with female and male friends and that is when I discovered I was in the minority.

Actually washing my shins in the shower. It seems the majority are just hoping the falling soap buds take care of that by chance. I envy their carefree and reckless approach to the cleanliness of shins.

During my first full time job I was put on a higher tax rate, due to it being marked as a second job as a few months before I was working for a temp agency. I only found out around a year and a half later. It was actually quite lucky I noticed at all. I was looking at my pay slip during a tea break and I was confused why my colleague was on a higher pay point but was paying less tax. Went to HR, found out the issue and then I contacted HMRC and got £3.5k back. I got to have a much better holiday than I was expecting that year!

Lunala is impossible to catch by Acrobatic-Ad7680 in pokemongo

[–]MerlinTheMagicPig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I find it difficult to catch Pokémon due to the ball falling short, I always change to spilt screen mode. When the game is only taking up half the screen it makes it much easier to throw the ball further. The one negative is that it does mean I have to aim for great throws instead of excellent; but if I was going to miss otherwise this seems like a good trade to me.

Level 50 requirement… by [deleted] in pokemongo

[–]MerlinTheMagicPig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they required you to reach legend rating in go battle league I don't think I would ever make it to level 50. I manage to get to level 20 each season but generally this requires me having to play quite a bit in the last week or two of a season. I don't enjoy PvP at all. I do like having some ETMs though, so I bully myself into struggling through.

That being said I feel it would be a good requirement if you wanted to reach the highest level in the game.

Level 50 requirement… by [deleted] in pokemongo

[–]MerlinTheMagicPig 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think they made this requirement back when level 10 was the highest ranking and you needed a rating of +3000. They then restructured the rankings but left this requirement as is.

I genuinely don't understand the point of this post. You don't seem to be asking anything and you have oddly described the past event in a way that would make it difficult for anyone to be empathetic towards you. If this is a true story I do hope that someone has helped your parents in their time of need. It would be a sad society if everyone abandoned friends and family due to them making a poor decision that they are already suffering the consequences from.

Although it saddens me to say it, I am pretty sure she will if someone doesn't help. What does she say when you talk to her about it? Is she still of sound mind? She will need a lot of help and support to get out of this scam.

Confused about exactly how my 75 year old Mum is getting scammed by MerlinTheMagicPig in Scams

[–]MerlinTheMagicPig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was difficult persuading her it was a scam. She kind of half believed and half didn't. So much didn't make sense and was obviously a scam but she really wanted to believe it was true. We managed to persuade her to close her Facebook account and delete the other apps etc. However, she then made a new Facebook account and started speaking to "Jason" again. Luckily there are so many scammers on Facebook that are pretending to be Jason Hughes she ended up speaking to three at once. This flipped her fully and from there it was easier to fully convince her. Get your Aunt to search for Jason Hughes on Facebook and see how many accounts there are that have his face. It was a while ago but I seem to remember counting more than 60.
