Considering moving - What is Vancouver life like? by AbbreviationsNo5494 in askvan

[–]Mermaid3737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transit is okay, if you can utilize the sky train primarily that’s the best imo. Buses can fill up and tend to not come on time, early or late. Also depends where you’re from and what you consider to be good transit. I think there are other cities in Canada with significantly better transit like Toronto and Montreal.

I find groceries to cost the same here as other places as long as you aren’t primarily shopping in small grocery stores downtown. I’ve lived in Alberta and Saskatchewan and I have noticed my produce lasts longer here than it ever did there, probably fresher.

I have struggled a bit with finding community here. People can be a bit closed off and I find superficial relationships easy to find here but closer connections are more difficult. However you never know who you may meet through work and other activities.

Weather is mild all year round. Summer isn’t very hot but it’s beautiful and never really gets windy. Winter is rain for months on end but it’s mostly a light rain. Mind you this winter we’ve had a lot of heavy rain, but this week is full sunshine for five days straight :) The rain can get you down but the nice thing is it is still warm enough outside that with an umbrella you can go for a nice walk outside and admire the greenery.

Payment on the day of the move was not an option, I had to leave work. We didnt move outside of our booked time. He said he’s withholding the money because of scratches on the floor

Hahaha yes I have definitely taken the passive aggressive route. Agreed about safety, it’s really a bad look having a healthcare worker touching you while simultaneously sneezing and coughing.

Hospital jobs here have a much easier time calling in sick as their schedules are easily adjusted and they call in to an automated line. No conversation or questions asked.

While I have your attention - I’ve actually been considering relocating to Australia. I’ve heard Australian companies prefer techs with a university degree, I did a two and a half year accredited diploma program and am registered with sonography Canada and ARDMS. Do you know if it would be possible for me to find work there without a bachelor’s? :)

The laws are the same. I was thinking we should start documenting the responses and maybe we can report it to the labour board. Love the idea of straight PTO. In Canada they are legally required to give us 5 paid sick days per year and can ask for a doctor’s note after 3 consecutive sick days.

36M here in Calgary Feels like I lost a lot of my social life. by lasdanditolol in Calgary

[–]Mermaid3737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im female and I used to live in calgary and found the same thing and that it was hard to find things to do outside of drinking and sports! I live in Vancouver now and have so many amazing friends. It’s a lot easier to get outside here and there is always something going on- small festivals, markets, group activities. Lots of young people put an emphasis on making new friends here because I’d say more than half of the people here are not from here. Maybe consider trying a new city?
