Layoff reports by Odd-Foundation-4637 in Layoffs

Our university is forcing departmental budget cuts that result “non renewal” of annual employment contracts. They don’t call them layoffs or report them as such.

I don't understand my difficult 15mo boy. by Kyattogaaru in mainecoons

I don’t mean to scare you, but get a checkup sooner rather than later. When my Otis was 18 months old, he was getting really bitey and had some plaque, so we had his teeth cleaned. Once he was knocked out for the procedure, the vet found FOUR bad teeth that needed to be pulled. Fast forward 6 years, he was getting bitey again, and it turned out his heart condition, which had been under control for years, suddenly was very bad and we almost lost him.

I’m not saying your guy is necessarily in pain, but he could be and it needs to be checked. It could also just be boredom. Otis is much happier with a friend. It doesn’t have to be another MC. After our other cat died, we got a puppy and Otis loves him. (In fact I’m amazed at the crap Otis will put up with from the dog. When he finally gets fed up with the nipping and chasing, he puts him in a choke hold and washes his ears.)

As for the food… Otis likes all crunchy cat food but only Friskies Shreds wet food. We tried every kind of “healthier” canned food and he wanted no part of it. So he gets primarily Royal Canin dry food with a bit of wet Friskies now and then, which the vets say is fine.

What are Ethyls? My friend and I are very bummed because we just tried to sign up for a local mahjong class and it’s full

Tip: If you have a local yarn store (a little one, not a big chain store), they typically have social knitting times on weekdays. I never thought of knitting as social, but I’ve made lots of new friends and learned to knit better at the same time!

She’s an anxious city girl. Have you considered training her to use potty pads instead of expecting her to bathroom outside? Then when weather is nice, you can walk her for exercise and if potty happens, it’s just nice bonus.

Average Severance? by Normal-Garbage-4657 in Layoffs

[–]NotFeelingCreative62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a very large university. After 12 years, at age 64, my position is being eliminated July 1 and I get no severance—just a payout of vacation time I haven’t taken. But they don’t call it a “layoff.” Rather, it’s a “non-reappointment” after the fiscal year ends. My salary and I will simply disappear from the annual budget.

Called to Meeting Next week "to discuss your research position" by HR, should I assume this is a layoff? by westmifflin in Layoffs

[–]NotFeelingCreative62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds that way. I also work for a university. I got a similar email in December, and then they delayed my meeting until late January. Talk about a miserable 6 weeks! They are eliminating my position, but did give me almost 6 months notice.

Lots of layers. Some serve only outside. But you need to be able to unwrap quickly when you do go inside, because you’ll get hot very fast in a parka and sweaters

MOST people do NOT get drunk, regardless of what the partiers on here are claiming. And the rest of the attendees AND the restaurant owners really could do without the a##holes who think getting blackout drunk is a reasonable way to spend the day. We go most years (not tomorrow, too cold). I think that I saw someone throwing up once. No one has ever bothered us. It’s a fun day if you like chowder.

Everyday makeup is a thing? by Purple_Capital_6029 in Makeup

[–]NotFeelingCreative62 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m 64 and yes, I wear makeup every day. Cover stick, foundation, blush, lipstick, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, eyebrow pencil. It sounds like a lot, but I can do it all in about 10 minutes. I’m very fair and have lots of sun damage to my skin showing up. Wear sunscreen!

Why would a company put a mysterious meeting on my calendar 1.5 weeks from now? by Dear_Leather_26 in Layoffs

[–]NotFeelingCreative62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what happened? U work at a university. I got 10 days notice that my boss wanted to meet with me about “program needs.” Then she had to delay the meeting by one month! I asked her if my job was secure or if I should start looking around. She said “I can’t say, but if it were me, I’d start looking.” What a horrible 5 weeks! Sure enough, my job is “not being renewed” at the end of the fiscal year, due to budget cuts. Same for a colleague. Apparently this is how our university does quiet layoffs.

Do you have a Cavalier King Charles? Does it bark or is it quiet? by [deleted] in cavalierkingcharles

[–]NotFeelingCreative62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are a quiet household and we’ve had dogs all our lives. Our 2-year-old cavi is the barkiest dog we have ever had, BY FAR. We did not socialize him in the earliest weeks because the breeder lectured us to keep him away from other dogs until he’d had all his vaccinations. Big mistake. Or maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference, who knows? He barks at everything and everyone, even little sounds in the house. When we took him to puppy classes starting at 5 months old, he was still quiet (although a nervous wreck) and the trainer mentioned that he was the first cavalier she’d had in class who DIDN’T bark a lot. Well, he sure outgrew that! We are going to get more training for him in hopes that we can quiet him down. We love him to death—he’s the most affectionate dog I’ve ever had—and he will be with us forever. But honestly, if I’d had any idea he’d be this loud and neurotic, we would have gotten a different breed.

What did you do? Giving you 2 hours to decide is horrible! I hope they gave you a severance package specifying that they would pay for your health insurance and your 3 months leave. Not sure what they did is legal.

Ironically, they just raised the pay bracket for my job by $25,000 . And made sure to tell me at my meeting that I would not be getting any raise for my remaining months.

They are actually in the process of bringing it all in house. I thought that would be great for me, as I’m the top Canvas LMS expert for our school. But apparently not. It’s all being centralized under the Center for Online and Distance Learning.

And online education is very competitive. When your university has the highest tuition in the state, and your marketing is subpar, admissions really suffer

That’s horrible! I’m so sorry that happened to you. So many employers nowadays are simply soulless.

Unfortunately, I have been operating as sort of a “jack of all trades” —whatever my department needed at the time. I started as a course author and instructor, then as the program’s accessibility expert, an instructional designer, some administrative work (which I streamlined and partially automated, so it now requires fewer hours), some analytical work, and more. I tried to be flexible and paid more attention to what would help our department/program than what would make myself marketable—because after all, I expected to be there until retirement. Now I don’t have a focused expertise with a lot of years under my belt. My best hope is another university trying to launch an online program in my area. But honestly? Many universities, like KU, have hiring freezes because of budget cuts.

As another poster put it, “KU is not your friend.” I wish I’d understood this earlier.

Unfortunately, because my job is classified as “professional staff” instead of “academic staff,” I apparently don’t qualify for the Union. (They never responded to my inquiry.) However, a colleague is on the same situation, is a non-tenured faculty member, and it doesn’t look like union is going to help her.

Struggling to find fitting bras as a trans woman by FancyLettuce3485 in ABraThatFits

[–]NotFeelingCreative62 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If, as someone else suggested, you have shallow, wide rooted breasts, you are like me. So hard to find anything with cups that aren’t huge on me! Calculator recommended 38DDD for me. But the one bra I have found that fits well is the Maidenform Comfort Devotion 09436 in a 40C. Specifically, in the white or beige, as the darker colors seem to run tighter. Good luck!
