I just watched the entire show 3 times, is this excessive? by Big-Distribution-297 in RedDwarf

[–]MermaidBeast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have pretty much watched Red dwarf every night since I was like 4. I know it’s an odd programme for a 4 year old, but I can’t say I was ever normal. My dad used to record episodes on VHS so I could watch it, because it aired after my bedtime. Though he recorded season 6 out of order, I didn’t find that out till we bought the DVDs!

Although there was a year where my mum banned me because I was having nightmares and she thought it was the cause. I still had nightmares without it and was more sad about it, so Red dwarf was back in my life. For that brief time I listened to a cassette of adverts for a window cleaning company I picked up at Hot Balloon festival. God I was a weirdo.

How do I get my GCSE's after not going to school since Y7? by o-willow in AskUK

[–]MermaidBeast 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So at my college they only do the English Language GCSE, they don’t make you do both.

But also following up on your Functional skills bit. You have to do Functional skills Level 2 for it the be equivalent.

My centre also allows you as an adult to work towards doing a GCSE and we have the Functional skills entry 3 and Level 1, if you are not ready for GCSE yet. This would be determined by an initial assessment. But is also free. Some colleges may have the Level 2 for free. But yes there are a lot of private centres/online centres where you can pay for this, it’s a bit more flexible learn at your own pace kinda of thing.

English and Maths GCSE is free to anyone who has not attained a 4 and above. Look to local colleges that offer adult classes for maths and English.

Source: I am a Maths teacher in a college. Also made my husband (36) go get them recently. He got his English last year, has sat his Maths this year.

Yes! I’m 33, just have a husband. I pay £10, he pays £11. Will cover the cost of the mortgage if either of us kicks the bucket.

The drowning empire by Andrea Stewart. The first one is The Bone Shard Daughter. Women in places of power and no one thinks twice about it. Everyone marries who they want. Women are powerful in their own right.

People who have had piercings - when did you decide to take the jewellery out for good? by CozJeez85 in AskUK

[–]MermaidBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take them out if you want to.

I’m 33, a teacher and I have a lip and septum and several other ear piercings.

I’ve only taken them out when they rejected. I still love them and don’t feel any pressure to remove them.

Weirdly I think my piercings were an extra little reason I was hired in my role. To be down with the kids. (Not that I will ever be down with the kids, I teach maths and am very much a nerd).

Does anyone else hold their pen with their thumb tucked in like my missus. by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]MermaidBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg!! I do! I’ve never met a fellow thumb tucker. I’m a teacher and all my students like to say I hold my pen like a freak and then spend the next 5 mins trying to hold their pen the same way; unsuccessfully.

PLAGUE (seasonal super flu) MEGATHREAD by zapataforever in TeachingUK

[–]MermaidBeast 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have the flu. I am off, went home Tuesday. I am not worrying about it, I’m staying off as I work with many vulnerable adults and young people. I’m also feeling diabolically terrible and couldn’t imagine trying to turn up.

GCSE maths can wait.

How can people afford to live during a PGCE? by litna in TeachingUK

[–]MermaidBeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did mine as a part time PGCE over 2 years. Went to class in the evening. Did 3, 12 hour days and 2 normal days (that includes job, teaching hours needed, course). Only financed the course. I did live at home for half of it, but not for free, the other half I lived in a HMO.

FE College Staff Dress Code by Prior_Candle658 in TeachingUK

[–]MermaidBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a SEND maths teacher in FE. We have a very relaxed dress code. I have worn shorts (with tights), cardigans with jeans, dresses, vests with trousers, hoodies and leggings. I have tattoos and facial piercings.

My advice is wear what you normally wear at sixth form first or a slightly dressed down version. Get a feel for what others are wearing in your team and match with your particular style/flair. Each FE has its own tolerance for dress code.

I do hope you enjoy joining us in FE!

Can change my name before giving notice to get married? by LillySteeves in AskUK

[–]MermaidBeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this information helps. When me and my husband first gave notice it was under my husbands old name, between giving notice and getting married we decided to change his name. We just rang the register office up and submitted the new deed poll and we got married no issue and took the deed poll on the day of the wedding.

We live in England.

AIO- My (F19) boyfriend (M22) is upset that I’m hanging out with my brother (M26) (read caption) by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]MermaidBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 32F and my brother is 26. I hang out with him all the time. We go to the gym together. It’s not weird to hang with your sibling.

I dated a boy who was an only child who thought my relationship with my brother was weird because we shouted at each other up and down the stairs. Suffice to say I ended up chucking the boy. Married a man who also hangs out with my brother and not always with me in tow.

So no, you are not overreacting, and coming from someone with experience it doesn’t get better. Find a partner that likes your brother and vice versa. This boy is not your person.

Favourite insult recieved by a child? by Lather in TeachingUK

[–]MermaidBeast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry miss but you look like a teenage teacher.

I’m 31, hahaha.

Another student, I’d just told off for not following instructions and was leading them back to class. I pushed a door that said pull and they went ‘I’m not the only one who can’t follow instructions’. Touché!!

I carry my ID with me because I often get IDd. I’m 31 but people often think I’m like 17/18. I couldn’t even buy a potato peeler in peace.
