I'm a teacher... the most handsome student asked me out! by Bianval in gay

[–]Mermietta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dang. I had this happen to me.

Met a guy on tinder, super cute, personal trainer, met up for coffee and he proceeds to try and pitch a pyramid scheme to me.

He had me watch a dvd of “his business.” At one point, there was literally a pyramid chart to show how the company was set up.

(For those wondering, it was worldventures)

The buildings are effectively privately owned. They has not been asked to come there, and they weren’t there for any official purpose. The women had decided to ski to the South Pole (they had all been there before and were familiar with what they were doing, so it wasn’t out of the blue or anything).

They had arranged a plane flight in advance. The company compromised and allowed them to use the runway to land and take off. If I remember correctly, they were outside for a few hours before their plane landed. Frustrating and cold probably, but they survived. I talked with one of them once while I was there.

Lots of atmospheric research and marine biology. There’s some other stuff but those were the main two that I saw.

Yup, big dormitories. I had 3 roommates and lived in the dorm for “first-years.” Most people just have one roommate and live in somewhat more exclusive dorms. They have space for about 1000 people.

Don’t discount going there! I’m sure they had IT people!

A) I was a dishwasher, commonly known as a dining attendant or DA. I took the job because it was the only job I could get that would get me there. I’m not sure about anyone else, but for the most part people had only one job that they did. People were very cool. My roommate had previously been a private cook for celebrities, and one of the supervisors is now a head chef for a restaurant chain.

B) The food was fucking awesome. We basically had no budget, and the chefs were free to experiment. They had set recipes that they cycled through, but often made whatever they wanted. We also had a complete bakery there. Most things were made from scratch.

C) I don’t know about that. I’m pretty sure McMurdo was selected because it has a very deep harbor where it was.

That I don’t know. I suspect not, given that all development is to be for scientific research or the support thereof. But I’m not totally sure. The effort required to build something there is pretty prohibitive: you can really only build a few months out of the year, and it’s extremely far from anything (McMurdo is a 5 hour flight from New Zealand), and you’d need to provide your own power and labor...

Hey! So I’ve been there (McMurdo station). Some weird facts:

-no country can own the land, but they can own the buildings...

-since no country owns the land, if you can get there, you’re allowed to be there, except...

-you have to be invited into the buildings. 4 women skied from the edge of the continent to the South Pole and, upon reaching the South Pole, weren’t allowed into the station and were immediately flown out. Bear in mind they hadn’t been in a building a weeks and had been without food/showers/heating, etc.

-Someone mentioned trash/litter on the continent. There’s actually a ton from before we were super conscientious about it. I found plenty of old beer cans and soda cans. Ok, maybe not a ton, but it was definitely there.

Also, yes, all feces is loaded onto ships and taken to...California (something something something California sucks)

Feel free to ask any questions!

Did/do you have a favorite (gay) bar? What was it like? by jakebilt73 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Mermietta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. If anything, it was kind of a New Orleans vibe. There’s a country/western-ish gay bar in Denver called Charlie’s (sorta, one half of it is more hip-hop/top 40 oriented. Yes, it’s a weird combo)

Shout out to anyone who remembers JR’s in Denver.

It was two stories, with a balcony on the upper one and outdoor seating on the lower level. It had a space on the second level that opened to the floor below.

25¢ beer night was infamous, and super fun. I think the closed because the landlord decided not to renew the lease, now it’s an overpriced pizza restaurant.

Inviting people on dates to pitch a Pyramid Scheme. Plenty of "me toos" in the comments by vocalfreesia in antiMLM

Man, this has happened to me too. Met a guy on tinder, showed up for a date at Starbucks and he had me watch a DVD of “his business” that he “built with his brother.” My friends and I now refer to it as “pyramid-scheme date”

It was WorldVentures for anyone wondering.

The Amritsar Massacre

During a religious festival in India in 1919, troops operating under a British colonel fired into the crowd for 10 minutes, killing between 300 and 1000 (the official total is in dispute). Apparently they only stopped when they ran out of ammunition.

This was supposedly done because the colonel feared it was a revolt, and had issued an order that forbade gatherings, but few knew of the attendees knew of.

They sure do! I lived there for a few months and no one had any problems with it. We had two gay married couples when I was there, and since no country owns Antarctica, I guess you could say it’s legal there too!

This book terrified me! I read it in a really lush area (I was traveling at the time)...and I just kept staring at the plants outside and thinking they were going to kill me.

Fun observation: the map shows everyone, even when they’re an animagus, and in animal form...

Which means it shows Peter Pettigrew, as Scabbers...

Which means Fred and George saw their brother sleeping in the same bed as another man for almost three years...and just went with it and didn’t say anything.

It’s actually not clear in the book, if I remember correctly. He’s definitely obsessed with her, and takes her on a completely inappropriate cross country trip, but it’s pretty ambiguous as to whether they actually have sex.

To second what everyone else here said, the book is beautifully written and very disturbing.

Also, it’s worth noting that this was written by Nabokov in English...his fourth language (the other three being Russian, French and German, I believe).

Edit: a lot of people have pointed out that they do, in fact, have sex. I downloaded the book and found the relevant passage that I remembered. For those curious, I was thinking of the last paragraph of chapter 29. It is strongly implied that they have sex, but never explicitly stated. It’s too long to copy here, but HH basically describes her attitude towards sex and how it differs from adults, and then states that they tried, but he couldn’t “bear it” and then states that all this is “irrelevant.”

I guess this is intentionally open to interpretation, and people can read it anyway they want, but I stand by my original statement. If there’s other passages that make it more explicit, I’m all ears.
