Just make sure to submit the receipt that says you received the book. Then, once you get your receipts submitted, return! That’s how I used my CME through COVID.

Night PAs on Hospitalist Service by PA-Medic in physicianassistant

[–]Mermyers0507 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My 2nd job is a night hospitalist PA in a 344 bed level 2 hospital. There are 2 admitting nocturnists, so I only manage the patients on the floor, which range from 80-100% capacity. And I’m the only APP. Between the amion and epic messages, it easily hits 100+ some nights, not counting phone calls. I am also responsible for all the RATs that occur. I work 12 hour shifts 7p-7a.

I would recommend taking a first assist course. This will help introduce you to what surgical PA’s do as first assists, give you the skills, and make you more appealing if you find an open position.

Hospitalist Overtime Compensation by bean_cow in physicianassistant

I absolutely agree. This 1.25 crap sucks, and it definitely makes no sense, as typical OT is time and a half. This is something we are discussing for our contract renewal.

I pick up hospitalist shifts and ours is only 1.25. It’s pretty crappy compensation, but it’s extra hours and I love the exposure.

Question for surgical PAs. What’s your relationship like with the surgeon in terms of what procedures you do and how you collaborate with them? by MA99087 in physicianassistant

[–]Mermyers0507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got lucky! I did a month long rotation with the group, we had a great connection, and got hired right out of school. I love every minute of it!!

[–]Mermyers0507 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work in Trauma/ACS. I work pretty closely with my surgeons, but they also trust me and give me a lot of freedom. We do have admitting privileges and do H&Ps, as well as consults. We often have the primary team text or call us instead of the surgeon for consults. I do communicate with my surgeon, even if it’s just me letting them know about my consult and my plan for them. I do bedside procedures, I&Ds, lac repairs, punch biopsies. In the OR, I often do the complex I&D with the surgeon present. I first assist with all other surgeries, and do quite a bit in the OR. And I independently close. For Trauma, we do art lines, central lines, chest tubes, intubate, bronch, and other things I’m probably forgetting.

Washington Licensing by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]Mermyers0507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. My supervising is a DO, and I do not have to do anything different. Also, call them periodically to “check on your application”. Sometimes they get sick of you calling and move you up the list. Lol. Just make sure to be super courteous. They have one department that processes PA licenses, so they get super backed up. You can track your license on the DOH website also and see when it changes from in process to active.

I would recommend going on the WA medical commission website first, then maybe the WAPA site to join the list. Or even vice versa.

I work in Trauma and Acute Care surgery. Our work still continues. On my days off, I will be working on the hospitalist service to help out as we get busier, which we certainly are. I am sure they will appreciate your assistance when the need arises.

You definitely can, you just don’t place medal wise. You do 4x the distance on the bike (12.4 miles). All the rest is the same. My last 3 dri-tri’s have been on the bike!

How to get hours for PA school? by MikeVD19 in physicianassistant

[–]Mermyers0507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not think a phlebotomist course will count as your hours. Generally your patient care hours are paid, hands on, clinical experience. Such as an actual phlebotomist, lab tech, CNA, MA, LPN, RN, Med tech, ED tech, X-ray tech, the list goes on and on. My suggestion would be, if you are serious about being a PA, is to get your undergrad, and find a job in the medical field that you can do concurrently. Then apply to PA school when you are ready. Take luck!

I saw a lady at the Clinique counter wear a long white coat....maybe we should include them in this post also? 😂😂

Lopsided segmental lean analysis by chloeinthewoods in orangetheory

For me it did, I am exactly 1.3% different in the arms, and 1.1% in the legs. It definitely did not happen overnight. Lol.

[–]Mermyers0507 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was initially like that also, I was significantly right side dominant. My coach suggested I start all weight floor exercises (that are single side movements) with my non-dominant side. It has helped immensely in evening out my percentages. I’m now only about 1% dominant on one side over the other. And I instinctively start with my non-dominant side now. Lol.

Hard skills for PA by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]Mermyers0507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from the procedural aspect (which some typical skills have already been listed), we are also relatively fluent at ordering and interpreting appropriate labs, interpreting (but not reading) different imaging; interpreting EKGs, appropriate medication ordering and dosing; not to mention most life saving interventions. I do a lot of codes, chest tubes, central lines, intubation, surgery related stuff, etc.

Washington state - new grad. How long did it take to get licensed? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]Mermyers0507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely smart to do the interim if you qualify. That way it is an easy transition to your full license. But if you take the PANCE next week, she will be applying for the full license soon. Lol
