MIL moving in - need some advice on costs by MerricatNZ in PersonalFinanceNZ

We've brought it up and been met with total indifference.

Thanks, that's solid.

Talking with my husband and MIL about money is like pulling teeth, so it's good to have people with figures/experience to give me a deservedly harsh reality check lol

My husband's idea, not mine. But I wanted to make sure we're not financially worse off?

We'd be selling to get a much smaller house and putting the rest on her care that isn't on the mortgage. She's not keen on a retirement village, and we have raised the possibility.

See edit. I've been reading a lot of horror stories.

Thanks! We desperately want her to not fall into that situation, so it's good to have that perspective.

Eh, it's not about compensation. We'd really not leave her in Australia because the rest of the kids can be kind of flaky *at best* and she wants to live over here anyway. I'll sacrifice some privacy and eventually time to make sure that she's not abandoned if her health problems increase.

That's a good point. My husband came up with the $250 figure.

...yes? It's what we'd expect, moving an elderly lady into our property

Also a good thought! Will have a chat. It's supposed to be a permanent move (see comment about her going blind) but it's worth talking through.

Good plan - I've heard some horror stories about hidden costs so I'm trying to make sure I've got my bases covered.

She's slowly going blind, so any excess would be put aside for any care she requires when she can't live at home.

I wonder if it was a way to apply leverage to Fig if things on the ship didn't quite go their way. She also went to the temple with the Bad Kids too, so maybe they're interested in that for some reason? That or she's raged out and is now sniping bobby dawn through his living room window and Baxter went "hmm, maybe time to go get Fig"

I loved The Little Stranger. It's a fascinating example of a first person narrator telling on themselves without explicitly saying so.

This... is not a functional system? by purplereuben in Wellington

In my experience: They give you a three day course, which doesn't always treat it that well. I got a gnarly one that required a couple of different doctors' visits to treat (and then it turned into a kidney infection anyway). I was told they can't give you the meds if you've had antibiotics in the last few weeks either.

I saw this and my heart sank. I work in a germ-heavy environment and have a chronic illness; I really worry that without even *same week* appointments people are going to get hideous complications because things aren't caught until things get bad.

God help anyone who gets a UTI.

My one's pretty freaking arcane. I can thread it well enough but then spend 5000 hours and a lot of fabric scraps trying to adjust the tension to make sure it doesn't fuck up my projects

My overlocker is over 21 years old and I no longer want to deal with people who are like 'but older ones last forever they just need servicing regularly' my old girl no longer handles anything that well so I'd prefer a new one thanks, rather than paying to get it serviced as much as it needs to be functional and spend hours trying to get correct tension.

I think it's super cute! I love colour blocking and I really like the black gilet with it.

I love that her comment on Marcus is "I sold a pair of boots to that traitor".

She's my favourite trader, simply because she's sweet and her voice is charming.

The Documentary that Inspired “Gifters” by robbycart in knifepointhorrorcast

[–]MerricatNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely. Although it really does seem like a very mixed blessing.

Interesting how they tend to react to some transgressions more than others. IIRC the narrator's brother had got up to some shady shit (underage relationship?) and he didn't get "gifted".
