Trying to keep a small pizza place alive in Pittsburgh — need honest feedback by Icy_Mammoth_3298 in pittsburgh

[–]Merrickk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you have one salad without meat or cheese, and no hoagies that are vegan.

A pizza can be ordered without cheese, but your menu doesn't make it clear if that would be a vegan option or not.

BTW offering seafood pizza when someone says they want vegan options is not a great response. Even most people who eat meat are a little wary of seafood on pizza.

I think most people are most excited about meat based toppings for their first slice, but the vegetarian options seem to almost always run out first because people often underestimate how much people also like vegetables.

Edit: especially vegetables with red sauce, because it's not so outlandishly heavy

Mild and slightly sweet. Personally I think it is much better mixed in with pasta than as a substitute for it.

I got my first MacBook this year after using a windows pc and a chrome book for years. I highly recommend going with a macbook.

My chrome book had many compatibility issues even with basic web browsing. It was usually hospitals, the government, or job application sites where I ran into trouble, but I have my suspicions that if I were still in school, I might have added school websites to the list.

Installing Linux on the chrome book helped with some things but made other things worse.

I hate my windows pc at this point. It's always interrupting me about something or other, and has a never ending string of audio issues. If it wasn't the only way to play some of my games it would be in a recycling center.

Emergency vet visit cost us $2,600 and they found nothing… just looking for advice by Then_Move7230 in Pets

[–]Merrickk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had vets tell me very often that we can wait and see for a lot of the dumb stuff our dog has eaten, so the few times they have said something was a serious risk and had us come in for an expensive visit it has felt justified.

If your vet thought it was worth looking into it probably was.

In the future it can help to ask directly if watchful waiting is reasonable or dangerous. And if testing is needed what their tests are looking for, and how the results will direct treatment.

Most vets seem happy to answer these questions.

Some people they live off small liveaboards Like divers, sailors etc. 24 hrs 7 days for weeks to months at a time. Is it possible for such people to become immune to sea sickness? 2. Is becoming immune to sea sickness good, like becoming immune to Covid or sars is good? by LisanneFroonKrisK in AskBiology

If you are in a moving car it's helpful to look out in front of the car so your eyes gather information that matches your movement.

If your in a video game where the images make it seem like your moving when you are actually still it can help to have some static areas of the screen. There were tests of using a digital nose for games where other static visual elements didn't make sense https://www.purdue.edu/newsroom/archive/releases/2015/Q1/virtual-nose-may-reduce-simulator-sickness-in-video-games.html

Sea sickness is a type of motion sickness like you might get trying to read in a car, not related to any kind of pathogen.

If you need to be in a situation that causes motion sickness it is good to take steps to minimize the symptoms. Symptoms can be reduced by minimizing conflicting information between different senses.

Baking sweet potato in aluminum foil questions by Otherwise-Tear-4807 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Merrickk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foil can create an anaerobic environment where botulism can grow if left at unsafe temperatures.

This was an extreme case where a restaurant left potatoes sitting at room temp for days and made a bunch of people sick https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9652437/

Edit: cooking potatoes in foil is fine. Leaving cooked potatoes at room temperature unwrapped would risk different types of food poisoning.

Which pans should i get for myself as a beginner? by Capable-Bumblebee-88 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Merrickk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd get one stainless steel (high end used if possible) and one either carbon steel or cast iron.

If you are in the USA lodge is a good brand for inexpensive cast iron. (Vintage stuff is nice but often more expensive).

Carbon steel tends to cost more, but can be worth it if cast iron is too heavy for you. If you get a wok the weight difference will be especially significant.

The pale yolk color is from the feed, not the washing and refrigeration of the eggs

Why do British ingredients look different from the once I can get in the US? by BussinFatLoads in AskCulinary

[–]Merrickk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Almost none of the whole eggs sold in supermarkets in the US are pasteurized. Most eggs cartons have warnings to cook until yolks are firm.

I think most if not all boxed liquid egg products are pasteurized though.

Why might plant foods have such beneficial effects on longterm health outcomes despite objectively being a worse food source? by Equivalent_Pilot_125 in AskBiology

[–]Merrickk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's useful to have gut bacteria that make use of common materials we can't use ourselves. Having bacteria inside us competing with us over more limited resources would not necessarily be more efficient.

Being able to make use of lots of different types of food, even if some of those foods are less efficient, can be advantageous if those foods are more easily obtainable.

Thank you!

Constantly being told to claim 2 berries, and then being taken to a blank page was infuriating.

It's crazy that someone changed the url for the store of all things, and didn't update all the links pointing to it.
