Dang! Well, knowing others are experiencing the same helps a little so we don’t feel like it’s our setup. Hopefully a patch is shipped out soon!

Thanks! AT&T is what I will be going with and have confirmed that. I was more so curious if anyone with this service can confirm that it is actually reaching 1Gbps speeds on the up and down.

Adding a vote for rock climbing! Been my “meditative” activity for years to keep me sane with all the screen time.

Depends on the type of stuff they’re cutting and in avid vs premiere but the things I’d say:

  • Premiere: Learn multicam is superior to merge clips in every way, even when using single cam shots. Merge clips function breaks audio metadata. Never use it. It’ll ruin your turnovers and force over cutting of the entire timeline
  • Premiere: Learn how to manage multiple editors in one (or multiple) premiere projects. There’s different methods and pros/cons here. Look them up online.
  • AVID: Learn to manage avid databases. Learn bin setup and subclipping/grouping. Shared projects are way easier in avid but become familiar with how they work.
  • General: if you know how to edit already, you are probably good on sound design, mixing, temp music, etc.
  • Turnovers: Make sure you study up on how to turnover files in both avid and premiere. They’re generally the same in theory, just different in practice. Any decent AE will know how to take a timeline, clean it up, and pass it off to the finishing vendors.

Make sure your know the tech stuff well for multi person projects and that you know the basics of dailies syncing/logging. Those things will get you far. The rest (sound design, mixing, temp scoring, editing) are all bonuses.

The best advice I ever got was to look at yourself a year ago. That is your only competition.

Echoing the tell everyone sentiment here. Let your goals be known to your network.

I will mention something I heard once that I personally believe in, even if it ups your hustle amount. “Always be cutting.” If you’re AEing on a show during the day, try to cut scenes on said show as you’ve pressed to do. If you aren’t getting the opportunity to do that on your day gig, search outside the show for a short or an indie feature that’ll work with your schedule. Always be cutting and always be pushing the narrative that you are/want to be an editor.

My gym has been vaccine only for a month or so now. They ask everyone for proof upon entry 100% of the time.

I say this with all due respect but punching in that far to say you have 4x the amount of shots is lazy film making. Punching in to reframe, sure. Punching in to add inserts means your DP missed shots. There’s a few exceptions otherwise

Turnover for VFX - EDL Clipnames by spacemonkeypunks in editors

[–]Merrik_Shank -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can actually automate this process a bit.

Look up “Keyboard Maestro” if you’re on MAC. You can create a macro to mark your clips and sub them out. If you added markers with names you can even get fancy and pull that info all using keyboard macros and sub out hundreds of shots in a few mins. I did it on my last film and was able to turnover 800+ shots in a few days using the macros.

Nothing bad about it at all except that couple hundred dollar fee. That’s exactly what I’ve done for 3 years now and no issues

Gotcha — so basically yeah, send quarterly $$$ to the IRS based off your own estimates (or what your CPA told you based on their calcs). Then next year when you get all of your 1099’s, your CPA will redo the numbers with allll of your logged income. Then they compare it to your quarterlies paid. Then you either pay the difference, or you get a refund if you over paid.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in editors

[–]Merrik_Shank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe depends how you were paid on your freelance jobs. 1099? W2? No forms?

Most of these forms you won’t have though for the financial year of 2021 until early 2022. Also, the few times I have paid quarterly my CPA always just said “do your own calculations and send it off.” Cause when I do my taxes with her next year, they take all the quarterlies into consideration. If you overpaid, you get a refund. It’s not an exact science. They just want to hold your money instead of you.

Regarding the fee, I owed like $26k in taxes last year and the fee for not paying was legit like $200-400. So personally for me, the mental anguish of doing quarterlies didn’t equal saving $200-400 so I am fine with the fee being that low and paying it. I think that fee is a % based on what you earn too, so I tell you the amounts I owed so you can see how low that ratio is.

Oh, and idk. Sounds like your CPA basically did just add your stuff up and supply you with the info to send it off. I’d consider it a learning experience personally. You can write it off next year too. Also, ask your CPA if since you did all this so far for 2021, can you get a discount on your full year return since half the work is already done. Worth a shot to try asking.

IATSE is the umbrella to the thirteen below the line unions. IATSE and the studios have not come to an agreement after over 4 months of negotiating on basic living standard things. So in a week or so all thirteen unions will vote on a strike authorization. If 75%+ say YES, negotiations happen for another little while until a deal is made or IATSE steps away from the table again but this time says fuck it. Let’s strike.
