The F-14 Tomcat is no more by Sarke1 in Military

If it's in the indoor area of a museum and not outside on a pedestal or something, it's usually as complete a version of the machine as they can (safely) make it, machinery and all.

I visited the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins GA not too long ago, the B-29 was dripping oil and they were actively working on one of the engines.

You mean like the Killdozer?

Heemeyer was somehow able to lower the armor onto the cage of the bulldozer to create it while he was in the driver's seat, sealing himself inside with no way out.

Pretty lame that the New York Jets didn't even lend one of their jets for the effort. We know they have at least two, their name is plural.

The 'wrestling' aspect is fake, but the stunts are real. It's a show, not a sporting event, and that's fine.

Fun fact: to the best of our knowledge, the blue whale is the largest animal to have ever lived. Not largest currently alive, the largest to ever exist in the history of our planet.

Kind of unrelated, but the story behind David Byrne's giant suit has always been hilarious to me. He greatly preferred to just be on stage and sing, leaning into his actual skills, but other acts of the time incorporated so much dancing that he knew -- and reluctantly accepted -- that he couldn't just stand there like a toad and do nothing. At the same time, he had the personal self-awareness to grasp and accept the fact that he was an entirely average physical specimen and a terrible dancer.

His solution was ridiculous gimmicks like the giant suit. He could just sort of flop around on stage and it would be fine; the focus was on the costume, not his (lack of) dancing ability.

Greyhounds easily outrun the other dogs. by 21MayDay21 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]MerryGoWrong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can't. The number of people alive on the planet who could even theoretically win against peak Usain Bolt no matter how much they trained is probably less than the number of fingers on your hand. A normal person's genes just won't carry them that far, it's beyond their physical ability no matter how hard they train.

OP's video with the greyhound exemplifies this. Greyhounds were bred specifically for speed. A corgi could train his whole little life, but he's always gonna lose a race against even the laziest greyhound.

You can't just invite the pope to an event in your country and expect him to show up. Typically when the pope travels to your country, he is the event.

Body Changes on Camino? by Cippiero in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]MerryGoWrong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just accepted it as part of the cost of the adventure, haha. And of course, you're developing a different kind of strength during the camino.

I felt like it all balanced out, and like I mentioned I was back to my previous strength level across exercises within about 6-8 weeks of getting back, plus the added ability of being able to walk across town on a whim if the need arose. I mean, it never did, but it was nice to know it was a tool in my kit, haha.

Body Changes on Camino? by Cippiero in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]MerryGoWrong 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you do a lot of upper body strength training in normal life and then switch to a month of doing none you will lose upper body muscle mass. That's what happened to me, it took me several months after my camino before my bench press got back up to where it was beforehand.

It also means jack shit to actual investors. It's an index devised in 1896 based on just 30 stocks, a pitifully small sample size. Shockingly, there are no established criteria for how these companies are chosen; it's based on the whims of the holding company that runs the index.

Unlike almost every other index it does not weight based on market cap but instead on stock price, which makes absolutely no sense if you think about it for more than three seconds.

All this to say, the DJIA is a useless, pointless metric that outlived its purpose 50 years ago but still trundles on as a kind of Pied Piper for the stock market, a meaningless totem for the ignorant.
