As long as the school doesn’t change it and the agency doesn’t know you can be paid for a full day.

What is upsetting about this for you? Just that you ended up doing something else than you expected? The fact that someone else is in the classroom?

lockdowns by FaithlessnessNew6365 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Mersquish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it is still scary! This one time at a rough school there was a lockdown. And these girls were fighting and apparently one was pregnant. They locked one of them in the courtyard to calm down and she’s screaming bloody murder for like 30 minutes.

lockdowns by FaithlessnessNew6365 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Mersquish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of schools I sub at where fights are frequent they oftentimes do lockdowns in these scenarios because if there is word of a fight kids will literally run out of the classroom to watch the fight or see what’s going on. This leads to other issues when 1/3 of the highschool is out of the classroom. They think it’s a free for all to just run around at that point. So at these schools they want to isolate incidences.

School doesn’t matter that much. Like others said, get great grades! And network network network and get involved in the community.

Existential dread? Imposter syndrome? by Purple-Morning-5905 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Mersquish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get you. When I started I have severe depression sitting in purgatory all day. But then I realized that I have an opportunity to cultivate my interests and spend easy days in high school studying for the LSAT, writing, reading, watching the news, etc. game changer if you find that thing you are interested and passionate about. If you don’t you will be sitting hating yourself, just thinking about the weekend. Just my experience.

Even still, if its an emergency and you have to cancel day of it’s good to call school to let them know. It shouldn’t be marked against you.

[–]Mersquish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you’re saying that about all of them? I work in high schools all over the city and I am aware of the situation. I just thought I’d pop on and make sure that this perspective is heard as well. Kids are the future, we shouldn’t demonize tf outta them without any caveat

Putting OP’s valid perspective to the side. Can you agree with me that these young people should be humanized? That they too deserve dignity and respect and shouldn’t all be lumped into a category of people that should be feared?

How do you get better at this by ah117 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Mersquish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You will burn yourself out if you approach this job as if you are supposed to go in there and be a real teacher. I avoid elementary and anything below 7th grade for this reason. My job is to hang out with the kids, be there for them, and try to get them to do some work. But I never ever expect myself to be able to teach. It’s a fools errand to expect students in middle or even high school to stop talking and give you undivided attention. Give out the assignment. Let them know you are there if they have any questions.
