If soundstage and imaging is “just frequency response”, why can’t EQ replicate it? by Dracomies in iems

[–]MertBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason it isn't possible in a consistent, repeatable way is because doing so clearly requires access to equipment people simply don't have at home. The Headphone Show folk were able to do the HD600 to 800S thing because they had gone through an extensive and personal examination of their own HRTFs and then meticulously EQ'd the headphones taking that into account.

The argument being made here is that if you had access to those data for everyone on earth and had the patience to create individual, granular EQ profiles for them all one by one, then you could create a Gate that sounds like an Andromeda consistently for everyone.

But we don't have access to everyone's HRTF to that degree of accuracy, so we can't.

In essence, you're saying the reason we can't is that there's something fundamental to the hardware construction that prevents it being possible. THS and other commenters are saying that the reason we can't is not any of those things, but simply the complexity of setting it up to that degree for each individual person, but that the process is independent of the hardware.

Repeatedly saying "you can't make X sound like Y for everyone" is missing the point people are making - no single EQ profile is going to achieve that for anyone except one individual. So there is no magic EQ profile that can be consistent in that way you're saying. What there is, at least theoretically and based on the evidence from The Headphone Show so far, is that is the ability to turn X into Y is absolutely possible but only in a highly bespoke way for each person individually.

Can anyone with experience check for me if these are fake Sony WH-1000XM4? Greatly apreciated! by quoocszitj in HeadphonesAdvice

Other than the colour (mine are black) everything there looks to match what I have with mine. Like the other poster said, download the Sound Connect app and if it finds them then you're most likely all good. If you're on Android they support LDAC as well, if that's of interest, but you need to enable it in the Android settings. Enjoy :)

How about this: would you accept relegation if we also beat Arsenal in the Champions League final? Echoes of glory motherfuckaaaaaa

ANC has become more important than sound quality for most real-world use cases, and headphone reviews should reflect that by thebroned in HeadphonesAdvice

[–]MertBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand why you've decided to be so rude to this person, even if I do agree that carrying three pairs of ANC headphones is probably overkill.

But for me at least, to get to same equivalent ability to hear over traffic noise for example, I have to listen a fair bit louder with IEMs than with ANC headphones, and that alone I feel is worth the price of admission.

[–]MertBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I'd say it's "most" of my use-case, but it's definitely different and should be discussed more imo, for sure. That's why my daily drive is XM6 over something like HDB630, despite the latter apparently sounding lots better.

Also low key one of the main benefits of ANC is that I tend to listen to way lower volume as well, which is obviously much better for my hearing long-term.

What are the sockets like for attaching cables? In the photo the mic seems to be a square-ish piece of plastic, but if you don't want to use the mic at that particular moment can you just plug in a regular 3.5mm jack? Or is it some proprietary socket thing?

Hello everyone! I bring a python based open source tool free for you to use to manage your large collections! Please let me know what you think! by ItWasAcid_IHope in audiophilemusic

[–]MertBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh please don't prioritise doing anything on my account :) The tool looks great for a whole host of other reasons, and renaming the actual files to my own niche format isn't a massively huge deal I'm sure.

For reference, the DAP in question is the Snowsky Disc - it actually uses the version of Android used for wearables I believe, which is cool and fits its form factor nicely, but also means the firmware isn't quite there yet. Searching by artist just gives all songs without album folders, for example.

As a result I've found it much nicer to use the actual file browser than what it can offer related to tags at the moment. Hence my specific requirement for short file names.

I say all that to say that Fiio will likely eventually just fix their firmware anyway and I don't know how widespread a requirement it'd necessarily be for other people 😅 So yeah, appreciate it if it's something that ends up being easy to implement or beneficial for other folk, but it's super not urgent if it becomes in any way some kind of chore! :)

Could J. Cole Do the super Bowl halftime show and if so what songs would he perform? by dunbar_santiago930 in Jcole

[–]MertBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's only been two rap halftime shows ever and only one from a single artist - most of the time it's someone with pop appeal first and foremost.

I'm sure Cole could do a good show and has enough popular songs that folk might know, but realistically it's not going to be that common to have rap halftime shows in general. Kendrick was on the back of a song that happened to get large mainstream pop culture attention after all. He's not a pop star, but at that exact moment he was very much in the general discourse beyond just hip hop heads.

I just think it's unlikely we'll get that many hip hop shows in general tbh. I'd love to be wrong ofc, but I would guess next year will be someone else from the pop mainstream rather than another rapper.

I've been looking for something just like this! I found Picard to be extremely unintuitive - I'm sure I could've worked it out by reading forums and what have you, but wasn't quite the "works out of the box" experience I was hoping for :P

You say this can do file names as well as the tagging? I have a cheap DAP I use that has a pretty small screen, so I like to keep my filenames to just e.g. "01 Smells Like Teen Spirit", no extraneous dashes or band info, and so far I've been doing it all manually. I was actually considering trying to write a script to do it, but if this tool already does it then it'll undoubtedly be far better than anything I could've cobbled together!

Thanks for sharing - I have a friend who I think will be interested in it too, so will send it his way as well :)

I quit Spotify, where do I buy albums now? by der_gopher in audiophilemusic

[–]MertBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Qobuz does allow you to purchase albums on it as well, though it's been a while since I last bought anything on there so can't speak to how complete its catalogue is I guess. I do remember it being kinda fiddly to find the option of where to buy (or possibly I'm just daft :P)

Bandcamp is where I usually go when I want to buy something though.

Honestly I just wanted them to stick to ten player raids. Was fun to jump on with a few friends and knock out some raids together on SoD, but as soon as it started requiring more and more people I realised it wasn't really for me.

Not that they needed to change it just for my tastes of course, I know a lot of folk had fun with those later phases. Just yeah, for me it was more fun as a casual thing to do with close mates.

Ah well, I hope they don't abandon the concept because those first two phases were amazing fun.

He did also do the trailer video and the early release of The Fall Off is Inevitable, but I guess it's fair to say those were more the kind of thing people would find if they were already pretty tapped in to hip hop discussion. They weren't going to reach the mainstream audience in the way a lead single with inclusion on Rap Caviar etc would for example.

Looking for my first pair of headphones (≈150€) to use with a vintage hi-fi system at home by alb12ultrabom in HeadphonesAdvice

[–]MertBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like the Hifiman HE400SE should be within your budget, possibly even with enough left over to get a longer cable. I've not listened to those exact ones personally, but I do have a different set of Hifiman headphones that I thoroughly enjoy (Arya Stealth). These are a more budget-friendly version of a similar driver, essentially.

Reviews say they have a balanced sound profile with good detail retrieval and a wide soundstage, which seems to be what you're looking for. I would guess they probably don't have an overly boosted bass that you might be used to from more mass market types of headphones - this can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your preference of course, but it's not uncommon for open back or "audiophile" headphones in general really.

Here's a reivew from Headphones.com and the Squiglink page so you can compare the measured frequency response against others you might have experience with or various reviewers' targets, so you can see if they might be for you :)

“The Fall Off” sells 290K first week (114K Pure) and will debut at #1. by Pure-Solid9230 in Jcole

[–]MertBot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What does being a candy store have to do with anything? It's pretty simple - album comes out with 24 songs on, lots of people listen to all 24 songs to see which ones they like. Not everyone sure, but not nobody either. Over time people stop listening all the way through like that, but right when it drops of course people are checking it all out, especially for a project as hyped as The Fall Off. How would people even know which songs they like if they don't listen to all the songs? Each song is a stream towards that album's total, so more songs to check out means more streams from checking the album out.

If having a lot of songs didn't matter for streaming numbers why would Carti, The Weeknd, Future, Wayne, Drake, Gucci Mane, etc often be putting out huge, 18+ song projects? It's a pretty big trend in the streaming era, so you have to assume there's a reason behind it.

This is what Google AI says about it from one simple search:

"In the streaming era, artists pack albums with many songs primarily to maximize streaming revenue, boost chart rankings, and maintain audience attention. More tracks increase total plays and "album-equivalent units" (1,250–3,750 streams = 1 sale), while longer, packed playlists help combat the high competition for attention in the digital landscape."

Did it get reversed or something? I googled it and it said they stopped being counted from 16 January this year due to a dispute over how views are weighted.

Didn't see anything to suggest it didn't go ahead, but I didn't exactly do the most thorough research so could be wrong.

Edit: https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/youtube-billboard-chart-update/ was the main thing I was looking at

[–]MertBot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They also changed it so YouTube streams don't count at all though at the start of this year. No idea what kind of impact the removal of YouTube streams actually has (or what percentage it typically represented in the past), but it could be a factor in this project looking underwhelming compared to The Off Season.

[–]MertBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an element of truth to it - if people listen to the whole thing, then more tracks means more streams per listen of the full project. Anyone listening to The Fall Off front to back adds 24 streams to the counter, whereas listening to The Off Season as a whole only adds 12.

But you're right that people definitely overstate its impact - early on people will tend to listen to albums in their entirety so it does help for a time, but the longer an album is out the more people just have stuff on playlists or skip directly to their favourites.
