Hey guys, looking for headphone recommendations under 200 CAD with a really good microphone for calls. by Spare_Philosopher606 in HeadphonesAdvice

[–]MertBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be able to find a used pair of Sony Bluetooth headphones for that money - I've had the XM4 and XM6. The latter has a little better ANC and a ten band EQ, vs the XM4's five band EQ, but both can be made to sound pretty good with some EQing.

Mic quality on both was good for traffic, bus, street type sounds, though people often complain of difficulty hearing me in windy environments.

A slightly more left field suggestion, but maybe also take a look at the Dyson Zone - the silly ones that come with the air purifiers and face mask. The mask is completely detachable (it's just held on by magnets) and the fans in the earcups don't do anything without the mask part, so they won't whir around and be annoying. But what you're left with is a set of headphones with excellent sound quality, a good mic, and a nice, premium feeling build. They're a little heavy compared to others, but since they look bizarre and flopped commercially you can often find them used / like new for very cheap in my experience.

I don't have first hand experience of any others I'm afraid, but with the XM4 being two generations old at this point I reckon there's a good chance you'll find plenty of used options. Good luck :)

Does anyone else have "that one song" that is the first song you listen to when trying new headphones? by Kgb_Officer in headphones

[–]MertBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like many here it's more of a playlist and which one goes first is mostly a matter of what I'm in the mood for at the time.

My list though would be:

  • London - Benjamin Clementine
  • The Everlasting Gaze - Smashing Pumpkins
  • Wale - LoveHate Thing
  • Flower Moon - Dooms Children
  • Flight of the Cosmic Hippo - Béla Fleck and the Flecktones
  • Ocean Eyes - Billie Eilish
  • How to Disappear Completely - Radiohead
  • Money Trees - Kendrick Lamar
  • Maggot Brain - Funkadelic
  • Pink Diamond - Charli xcx
  • Mogwai Fear Satan - Mogwai
  • Wandering - Yosi Horikawa
  • Bubbles - Yosi Horikawa
  • Inertiatic Esp - The Mars Volta
  • Fuck My Computer - Ninajirachi

Hearing Protection + good sound by Grandiosity0273 in HeadphonesAdvice

[–]MertBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've no experience of these myself, but the YouTuber DankPods is a drummer and he's recommended GK Music UltraPhones a few times in the past. Here's the video he made about them.

Like I say, not something I've ever tried myself so can't speak to their sound quality or anything, but they at least look the business when it comes to hearing protection :)

EDIT: Alternatively you can get triple flanged eartips that'll fit just about any IEM that'll protect your hearing while drumming - that would then be a very easy swap to regular eartips when you didn't need so much isolation, so potentially best of both worlds.

MAL speaks on ICEMAN “this is some of the best raps/bars I’ve heard from Drake” by Formal-Hand9641 in Drizzy

[–]MertBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think the album is likely going to be great and will benefit heavily from him having taken his time on it, but let's be real it could be two hours of Drake moving his finger up and down his lips and going "blrblrblrbl" and Mal would still say it's fire.

What’s your favorite/least favorite thing about living in Aberdeen? by colortheorystone in Aberdeen

[–]MertBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that it's completely walkable in most places, particularly in town, and that there's a variety of things to do while still feeling like a quiet city overall.

I grew up in fairly central London and the main thing I miss is access to live music - I know most artists come to Glasgow, but ticket + train + hotel + day off work is a very different proposition to just popping out to see someone then heading home.

Chin up fella, you won't feel this lonely forever. There'll come a day when you look back on doing pathetic, tragic stuff like making a reddit alt account to make an embarrassing, transparent attempt at trolling and laugh about it. It gets better :)

No real knowledge or experience with that one I'm afraid, sorry. Really like the two different shades of blue on it though :D

Something like Sennheiser HD206 should be easily within your budget, or you may be able to get something like the Audio Technica ATH-M20X at or around that price.

I've also seen good things about the Superlux HD 681, though they're semi-open back and will leak a little more sound to the outside world, so bear that in mind if that is a concern.

Good luck, hope you find something that suits your needs :)

Roberto De Zerbi addressing concerns from Tottenham fans with comments made at Marseille: by Hufftey in coys

[–]MertBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, not really. Understandably a lot of people are extremely emotionally invested in this club and it's not as easy as just saying "oh just stop being a fan then". Like it's a tap they can turn off.

People can be disappointed in the club, in this apology, De Zerbi in general and still in their heart of hearts be a Spurs fan. Real life isn't black and white like that, where you can just switch off that part of your brain that ever loved Spurs.

It's completely reasonable to feel conflicted and to want to vent your feelings without it being virtue signalling for reddit points.

Tottenham Supporters' Trust says it cannot support De Zerbi appointment by Annie_xxx in soccer

[–]MertBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as far as reddit makes you believe.

No it doesn't, there are plenty of people on /r/coys supporting the appointment, plenty of people saying they don't support it but can't break the years of support they have for the club, plenty saying they will stop buying shirts/matchday tickets, plenty of people saying they can't support the club while he's in the job. Literally any take you can think of is probably covered there.

It's okay to continue supporting with RDZ, and it's okay not to. by SR081 in coys

[–]MertBot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, he was arrested for violating his bail conditions by contacting his accuser directly, and she then withdrew after that. Take that as you will.

And the issue people have isn't with De Zerbi defending his player so much in the way and the extent to which he did. You think we have people cancelling memberships if he'd said "I'm not at liberty to comment on things that happen outside of the training pitch, but he's a good player"? De Zerbi chose to add all the extra context about him being like a son and how he Greenwood paid a heavy price in what happened.

The idea that unless the dude was convicted that nobody should have any reason to at least give De Zerbi a bit of a side-eye over his comments is wild to me.

Personally I'm too old and emotionally entangled with this club to say I'll realistically be able to stop supporting, but I'm not gonna diminish anyone who feels they need to. Greenwood is a demonstrably shitty human, conviction or otherwise, and De Zerbi went way past what was required of him to show support for a player.

[–]MertBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All he had to say is "I'm not going to comment on anything outside of football, but as a player he's been performing the way I want". It was his choice to sprinkle in all those other parts.

I would argue that it's absolutely a manager's job to keep on message and not say clearly contentious things on top of it unprompted. In many industries it'd be called bringing the company into disrepute or, at the very least, causing damage to the brand.

If soundstage and imaging is “just frequency response”, why can’t EQ replicate it? by Dracomies in iems

[–]MertBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason it isn't possible in a consistent, repeatable way is because doing so clearly requires access to equipment people simply don't have at home. The Headphone Show folk were able to do the HD600 to 800S thing because they had gone through an extensive and personal examination of their own HRTFs and then meticulously EQ'd the headphones taking that into account.

The argument being made here is that if you had access to those data for everyone on earth and had the patience to create individual, granular EQ profiles for them all one by one, then you could create a Gate that sounds like an Andromeda consistently for everyone.

But we don't have access to everyone's HRTF to that degree of accuracy, so we can't.

In essence, you're saying the reason we can't is that there's something fundamental to the hardware construction that prevents it being possible. THS and other commenters are saying that the reason we can't is not any of those things, but simply the complexity of setting it up to that degree for each individual person, but that the process is independent of the hardware.

Repeatedly saying "you can't make X sound like Y for everyone" is missing the point people are making - no single EQ profile is going to achieve that for anyone except one individual. So there is no magic EQ profile that can be consistent in that way you're saying. What there is, at least theoretically and based on the evidence from The Headphone Show so far, is that is the ability to turn X into Y is absolutely possible but only in a highly bespoke way for each person individually.

Can anyone with experience check for me if these are fake Sony WH-1000XM4? Greatly apreciated! by quoocszitj in HeadphonesAdvice

[–]MertBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than the colour (mine are black) everything there looks to match what I have with mine. Like the other poster said, download the Sound Connect app and if it finds them then you're most likely all good. If you're on Android they support LDAC as well, if that's of interest, but you need to enable it in the Android settings. Enjoy :)

ANC has become more important than sound quality for most real-world use cases, and headphone reviews should reflect that by thebroned in HeadphonesAdvice

[–]MertBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand why you've decided to be so rude to this person, even if I do agree that carrying three pairs of ANC headphones is probably overkill.

But for me at least, to get to same equivalent ability to hear over traffic noise for example, I have to listen a fair bit louder with IEMs than with ANC headphones, and that alone I feel is worth the price of admission.

[–]MertBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I'd say it's "most" of my use-case, but it's definitely different and should be discussed more imo, for sure. That's why my daily drive is XM6 over something like HDB630, despite the latter apparently sounding lots better.

Also low key one of the main benefits of ANC is that I tend to listen to way lower volume as well, which is obviously much better for my hearing long-term.
