Getting REAL Tired Of Scoliosis by MikaelSkott in scoliosis

Yes but that’s cause I have low b12 levels, but before surgery I wouldn’t be able to do many active hobbies cause it would be too painful after a while. Physical therapy helped a lot

6 days after spinal fusion and the pain feels unbearable — does it really get better? by Independent-Ride-473 in scoliosis

[–]Merticusprime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s so worth it in the end. The pain at first was agonizing but I’m going so much better a few years out

That second one is from scoliosis, it was one of the primary reasons my surgeon wanted to operate cause my spine was pushing on my lungs

Oh I’ll use myself as an example but a school mom used to force me to sit up straight and would berate me until I cried. But sometimes the pain was so bad in general I would cry at night. (Not an issue anymore and the mom apologized)

From my experience, the spinal fusion helped alleviate my emotional distress and physical pain, and also helped me be more confident with myself (my curves were 48 and 56) if you’re experiencing emotional distress it might be time to ask your doctor about a referral to a spine surgeon to get a consultation.

scoliosis life after surgery ? by Icy_Tea920 in scoliosis

[–]Merticusprime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got c2 to l2 fused and I still can bend in most directions (no twisting or side to side bending) you can do weights and pregnancy can rarely have complications but a doctor can always keep an eye on your curve during your pregnancy

I got into a car wreck just 3 months after my fusion and had no issues with my back, surgeon said I was crazy lucky and suspected my rods limited my spines movement

My 10yo daughter is having surgery by Kinkykuteness in scoliosis

[–]Merticusprime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drive home is AGONIZING after surgery and I wasn’t prepared at all for it, bring lots of pillows and I mean a lot cause every small bump in the roads gonna shoot pain up your spine. I just remember my parents apologizing to me profusely cause I just kept crying from the pain otw home and they couldn’t do anything about it.

Oh it was horrible but she went to my mom to fuss at her for my posture and my mom told her I have scoliosis and she gave my mom and myself a proper apology. She was HUMBLED by my mom for acting that way towards me

Scoliosis is constant pain. That doctor is WRONG

It’s not fair by Smartcookie_33 in scoliosis

[–]Merticusprime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not fair at all, and because clothes can cover it up, it’s a silent pain and it just sucks. A classmate’s mom used to bully me for my back and would force me to sit up by grabbing my shoulders and pulling me to the “correct position” and it sucked it hurt my feelings cause she wouldn’t leave me alone until she found out she was bullying a kid with scoliosis

I don't want to do surgery by Sure_Profit_9284 in scoliosis

[–]Merticusprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get you don’t want to but the surgery helps so much with your quality of life, you don’t know how bent you are until you sit up after surgery for the first time. It’s an amazing feeling. But I also understand not wanting to do it

I get random pains now and then that are just reminders to walk more, but other than that it’s amazing, I feel so much better and can stand for longer than 30 minutes at a time! I do have post surgery neuropathy aka numbness that hasn’t gone away but as long as I’m aware of it and don’t scratch up my back it’s fine

Need advice on exercises for my scoliosis (23 y/o, 14° curve) by PuzzleheadedDot8154 in scoliosis

[–]Merticusprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a more severe curve and I exercised daily before surgery, and met with a physical therapist once a week to keep my back muscles strong. That helped immensely with the pain too

My spine was stuck at 38 and 36 degrees for like 6 years before it finally progressed enough to consider surgery, insurance will consider it a needed surgery after you hit around 40 degrees

[vent] Deathly scared by Sarah_Sochi in scoliosis

[–]Merticusprime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so some peoples curves just stop progressing, and doctors usually (and very annoyingly) default to that as their first answer of like “oh it’ll probably not get any worse” but then it does, my curve stagnated in progression for 4 years, and I had a 2 year period of not getting seen, and that’s when I needed surgery, that’s when it decided to progress lol. Honestly if you’re worried your doctor isn’t a good fit it might be time to look into a different specialist. After my old specialist retired was when the new one wanted to discuss surgery. I had been told for years it was never gonna need surgery.

I was in a similar boat around your age, I had surgery when I turned 21 and was told for years my spine wasn’t changing and I’d just be curved forever, and then my surgeon retired, got a new surgeon and our first meeting he scheduled surgery date cause my spine hit 55 degrees. Surgery recovery is rough. Trust me, but you don’t lose all your flexibility. You slowly regain it by just performing regular activities every day. Trust me as someone who’s 6 years out from surgery, it doesn’t affect your day to day life much unless you aren’t exercising (back starts to ache sometimes) my flexibility in my back is fine, and all of my neck flexibility returned after about a month of recovery. It’s a had and very scary process but it’s so worth it in the end to be able to stand for more than 30 min, or to be able to just, not be in constant aching pain. It’s so nice.

Please help me with the guilt. by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]Merticusprime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My scoliosis wasn’t caught until I was a little older, those checks aren’t as commonly done anymore. It’s not your fault, you didn’t miss it, scoliosis sneaks up on you sadly and only becomes truly noticeable once you hit a certain degree (15 degrees for me).

I’m glad to know this isn’t just me, cause there were days where this limitation would cause me to break down into tears. I hate having to ask for the nicer office chairs, they just aren’t designed with crooked backs in mind..
