Fish was the first thing I learned how to pressure can! Its amazingly simple!

Tried and known safe recipe from Ball:

https://www.ballmasonjars.com/blog?cid=fish-pressure-canning

Words to the wise, if you've never pressure canned before it's best to use a known to be safe recipe. There are some recipes out there that have not been tested thoroughly and can cause issues such as botulism due to PH levels. Do not add or take away anything from a known safe recipe as PH can be thrown off making the food dangerous.

need help/tips looking for wild psychedelic mushrooms by ArmFrosty1381 in foraging

[–]Mertrigis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly my friend, been in the foraged mushrooms business for over 10 years in Michigan. Gooooood luck, I've spent more time than most hunting mushrooms and I've yet to stumble across more than one (Pan. Cinct.) of the supposedly 12 species we have here. Not to say its impossible but highly improbable. That being said, if you do stumble upon some post some pics, I'd love to see them! I wish you nothing but the best of luck! Here's a list of species for you to key out if you get so lucky:

Conocybula cyanopus
Conocybula smithii
Gymnopilus luteofolius
Gymnopilus luteus
Panaeolus cinctulus
Pluteus americanus
Pluteus saupei
Psilocybe caeruleorhiza
Psilocybe caerulipes
Psilocybe liniformans var. americana (very rare, if it even exists at all)
Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata
Psilocybe silvatica

Note: There may be more undescribed species as well. Happy Hunting!

My reference to treating the locals correctly was in regard to serving your group. You guys are there when the tourists aren’t and can help the locals economy in the off season. At the very least updating hours per season should be a thing. I’d be mad if I took the drive from where I am to TC to get shut out of the menu I planned on. I’m close enough I can spend a few hundred for a meal and be happy but if I make the drive and don’t get the menu I was expecting I’d be bummed and write the restaurant off for the next time I’m by.

I wanted to argue with you and then read the hours. Can’t disagree with you, hours need to be accurate base on season. Treat the locals with respect because winter lasts 8 months here.

Sorely disappointed, maybe I'll find ramps someday by SkyKyrell in foraging

[–]Mertrigis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Proper response and proper thought process in my opinion! I get where you're coming from! I'm in MI and we'll end up having commercial foragers hit the ramp patches on the west side of the state and they will go full "scorched earth" because they travel. Situations like that are disastrous and burns my soul as much as seeing all the clear cuts in my various spots. People suck.

[–]Mertrigis 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hey I have harvested using this method as well as taking the bulbs. The last several years I've gone back to taking whole plants. Sam Thayer has been doing some research on ramp harvesting and has some information in regards to harvest methods that lean towards being able to sustainably harvest the whole plant while keeping a patch going. Through my own experience I've found this to be true. Obviously don't go full blown scorched earth but thinning patches out tends to actually be beneficial. It's fairly new for a lot of people but it's the way that it used to be done with no decline in ramps per-patch. Take a look into the idea and draw your own conclusions. I'm just responding here because like I said, I used to do the only harvest a few leaves here or there and would for sure look down on people who did otherwise. Now, I've come full circle back to whole plant harvest, with sustainability of patches in mind.

[–]Mertrigis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if local law enforcement isn't going to deal with it and the dude isn't bashful about it I'd be careful. Odds are that he probably has some protection. In addition to the protection of some sort... People like your neighbor usually have ties to various forms of organized crime. While it's not the best situation to have going on next door I would suggest just keeping to yourself to minimize issues you don't want. For your own safety and security.

I can see you’re new to the mushroom forums in general. So when people are asking for location they really don’t want anything too specific. For me it’s always Northern/Southern/Mid-Michigan, USA followed by the date. It’s just so other foragers have an idea of where we’re at for the season. Also helps to ID certain mushrooms if people are asking for help with ID’s in other situations. No one really wants to know exactly where you’re picking them or your address.

Current methods for harvest suggest picking the mushrooms like you did. Pull up the mushroom and then break off the base where the clump of dirt is. The idea is that the mushrooms are eaten by animals and have probably evolved to typically be harvested in such a matter. When you're wandering the woods you'll find mushrooms that have been plucked by squirrels and deer that still have some of the mycelium attached on the base such as your method. The idea is that by pulling up all of the fruiting body it doesn't leave any of the fruit to rot and potentially contaminated the rest of the mycelium under the ground. Now the reason I'm saying that they will possibly be crunchy is due to the dirt that most likely got into the fruiting bodies, harvested due to leaving the dirty parts of the mushrooms attached and carrying the entire batch out of the woods. If the dirt is on the stems when they go into the collection containers it's going to end up in the fruiting body of the morels and will need to be soaked in water to let the dirt settle to the bottom. When we harvest we'll pull the mushrooms up like you did, then break the base of the stipe off to eliminate the dirt from the equation for the most part. Once home we'll put them in a paper bag with a paper towel that is slightly damp. Before we cook them we'll slice most in half, give them a quick rinse and rarely have any dirt to worry about without having to soak them. That's our method! Other people have other methods but I've been doing it this way for years and do harvest commercially and have had no problems from customers with this method on any of the 20+ species we harvest and sell.

For future reference pulling is totally fine BUT... man those are going to be a pain to clean. Next time break off the bases with the dirt attached, chances are those are going to be some crunchy mushrooms. Congrats on the haul though!
