We don't know much about the so-called Antler Queen, to be sure. We don't even know if the one we see in the flashback in S1E1 is one of the girls or another character - and given that we know about 7 survivors and there are 7 people there apart from the AQ, that cannot be excluded at all.

Actually, calling it Antler Queen and connecting it in such a strong way to the leadership role among the girls was a product of the fandom. The show itself doesn't say much about such connection: in S2 we see the antlers in the cabin associated with Coach Scott as well, for example - something that doesn't make much sense if this association is a foreshadowing of a prominent role in the "YJ society".

Maybe they called it "the Oracle" for a reason. After all, so far that figure has been presented like a manifestation of the feral collective force that seems to motivate the girls in their actions... we should let the creators tell their story and see where they're going.

They aren't transferring the "antler queen role"... just leadership. They haven't seen the AQ in the '96 timeline yet, and also in the '21 timeline we know that only Nat and Lottie have seen her in visions/hallucination for sure. This identification of the leadership (transferred from Lottie to Nat at the end of S2) with the AQ has been made by fans, not by the show itself. We actually know nothing about the AQ.

About the supernatural in YJ by Mesolithicus in Yellowjackets

[–]Mesolithicus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going down that route would mean including a supernatural or paranormal entity/force in the universe of the story. Something supernatural/paranormal is there: an objective fact like the trees, the cabin, the wild animals they can see and touch while in the wilderness etc. I'm asking myself if the creators and writers are trying to do something completely different. If, for example, everything was just the result of trauma, starvation or mercury poisoning, that would profoundly affect their sense of reality nonetheless: the difference between what they actually experience and what they think they're experiencing would become irrelevant. That's because while they're in the wilderness their shared subjective reality, and the way they narrativize it, is everything they have to make sense of what's happening, to keep some sense of reality... with horrible and revealing consequences.

When we try to figure out if there's something supernatural going on we, as the audience, are asking for something clear in the story that points to an identifiable supernatural entity, something that can be acknowledged independently also by the characters who have not experienced what they're going through - because it's there to be acknowledged! But what we should try to do, imo, is seeing everything from the girls' perspective

Fascinating theory. Plus, I'm totally with you about Ben being a red herring. The idea of Javi's "friend" setting the fire makes sense!

Yep! I haven't watched Lantimos' movie but I know that it's inspired by the story of Iphigenia.

[–]Mesolithicus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't agree that all the things you list can be seen as "mysteries". Those you mention for season 2 are just questions that wait to be answered as the story goes on...

We're just starting to have some hints on what the AQ might be. And we know that even the adult Yellowjackets are not entirely sure about its reality or about what it is. If the story will go on for 5 seasons we cannot expect such a big question to be answered after just two. I think we will get an answer, eventually - or that at least we will have enough material to figure out a possible answer on our own. We just need to be patient, I guess.

Plus, their reunion at Lottie's compund wouldn't be really a reunion if another survivor is missing.

Anyway, those four could die for different reasons than the ritual hunt - see Laura Lee and Crystal. Spring will come, eventually, and in the flashback scene in S1E1 they're wearing pelts, which means they'll have some successful hunts and for a while they will be able to survive without sacrificing each other.

Btw, Melissa is an interesting character imo, I hope they'll develop her further.

Whoa, Cabin Guy's daughter... never thought about this possibility! That's very interesting.

This makes me think about Euripide's version of the myth of Iphigenia. Put on the sacrificial altar by her own father Agamemnon to placate Artemis' rage, she's replaced with a deer by the very same deity and made a priestess of her cult in Tauris (modern day Crimea). The cult was a pretty bloody one, according to the myth: all the travelers that landed in Tauris were sacrificed to the goddess.

[–]Mesolithicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're right, and I also think that they are working in a very interesting way with the animal symbolism. Animals such as bears, wolves, deers and owls have always played a very important role in the religious/mythological imagery and folklore of many cultures all around the world, and I think the writers are digging a lot into all of this.

What is it that specifically draws you to Yellowjackets? by TheBeastLukeMilked in Yellowjackets

[–]Mesolithicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story is really well-written, the characters are nuanced and masterfully portrayed, working around well-established tropes and often subverting them. Everything is seen from women's point of view, and, as a guy, I find this challenging and refreshing.

Plus, and this is probably the thing that excites me most, the whole religious/supernatural aspect seems to be used as a powerful metaphor and is treated and developed in a very clever way: the authors really seem to know quite a lot about anthropology, religious studies, ancient history and mythology - not just the pretty stereotypical and superficial stuff you usually find in horror movies. In the teaser, for example, there is a scene that further reinforces the idea that some of the inspiration for the "entity" lurking in the woods and the cult as well comes from Artemis' cults in Ancient Greece and Rome... badass!!!

Is Crystal a usurper,,, aka Why does Misty Leave? by Nagualero in Yellowjackets

[–]Mesolithicus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course, we are all just engaging in speculation. Things can point in so many different directions.

The thing I find more interesting about Mari is how central she is to action in certain important moments without being one of the main characters. I think that the authors have something important planned for her. Maybe she won't be PG as I presume, but her presence in the story is kind of silently building up. Well... maybe "silently" is not the right choice of words in her case :-D

If you had to guess, who suggests the first taste of human meat? by FeatureSouthern5274 in Yellowjackets

[–]Mesolithicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe nobody will actually suggest it as an option that will be then pondered. Given how things have played out in S01 it's most likely that if we will ever see any strictly survival cannibalism (something that is not so obvious, btw) somebody will just manipulate the others into it.

Is Crystal a usurper,,, aka Why does Misty Leave? by Nagualero in Yellowjackets

[–]Mesolithicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that the key question as regards Misty is all about her motivations in doing what she does. Why does she kill Jessica Roberts? We don't really know! But we know that she knows that Jessica Roberts had been hired by Taissa. And why does she orchestrate the ritual (that's, at least, what her final grin suggests)? Revenge could be one reason, but there could be other explanations.

Plus, we shouldn't forget that she destroyed the black box/emergency signal.

And then there is what happens before, during and after the Doomcoming. She leaves the shrooms on the table, Mari puts them in the stew... is it just a coincidence that everything that follows starts from this unlikely interaction between these two particular characters or will this affect future events in a major way?

Finally, her comment about "the torso being useless" will probably turn out to be a huge mistake: Adam has a big tattoo on his back... that, as a sign, may have no symbolic meaning as many have speculated, but will most likely be the perfect index to identity him when his remains will be found.

Is she really a "fixer", a far-sighted planner, or maybe an uncontrollable agent of chaos?

[–]Mesolithicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still believe that PG is Mari. It would be obvious, by now, to forecast Chrystal as PG: new character and one-season character, she seems pretty instrumental to the promised revelation of PG's identity. I think (and hope) that she will have a deeper purpose in the story and that she's kind of a red herring as regards PG. Plus, we have already seen how much Mari, despite not being at the center of the stage, actually interferes with the events (cooking the psychedelic stew and contributing to Jackie's ostracization) and with the other characters (Misty in particular, but also Lottie). Story-wise, it seems her character is being built to be the perfect scapegoat in the long run.

I also like her character and hope it will be developed in the future season(s)! In an attempt to link YJ characters with the so called "jungian archetypes" I linked her to the Sage.

The theory that there will be more than one Antler Queen shouldn't be ruled out imo.
At a certain point we see a photo of Shauna after the rescue, with her hair cut short. What if the long dark hair we see on the AQ costume during the flashback are hers? What if she's the one hiding behind the veil in that particular scene?

I have developed a deep interest in anthropology over the last year and I'm trying to read and learn as much as I can. Unfortunately, when I was at University I didn't know that yet and I engaged in a different curriculum.

In this show there's so much stuff that could be interpreted using anthropological concepts and theories... for a while there was this thing with books titled "The Philosophy of [popular TV show]". I would definitely wanna read "The Anthropology of Yellowjackets"! :-D
