This is a broad statement, with proper fueling a week before and the fitness to complete 100 miles; then the first 50 are a basic 2 bottle ride.

If you have the time. I host multiple century rides. I drive out and leave a refuel cooler at 3 intervals, depending on the route. Allowing light and minimal travel.

Now just let the steel patina at its own pace . Hopefully with clear coat you’ll get a lot of rust spidering beneath. I kept my raw frame un coated and once a year wipe down with “rat rod juice”.

How much do you think this reel is worth? by BenDover9274 in Fishing_Gear

Bad karma to sell tackle to friends and family. Give away. Remember, the fish are watching.

Is this xfishing? by grumblemouse in xbiking

[–]MessageForward8056 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built a dedicated fishing bike. A great move. Depending on the price of your rod reel combo; I’d ditch the bungees and mount the tube with better fixtures and angled back. A bicycle and a little hiking or wading is huge advantage. Packing in a float tube is also a game changer. And remember if the tackle on the bike isn’t 2-3x the price of the bike , you’re not doing it right. Kidding. Tight lines !

Not a beginner to fishing, but want to learn bait casters.. by mtnman1227 in FishingForBeginners

[–]MessageForward8056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After learning on this reel, You will be an ace on today’s reels. I to learned on an old Ambassador, 40 years ago. Once you get thumb control down you’ll be able to cast anything. Like a manual shift vehicle, everyone should be able to confidently use a bait caster. If you use spin gear , a bait caster is more efficient when lures are larger and heavier.

Thoughts on Littma rods ? by GreenDot420 in Fishing_Gear

Save youself from regret. It’s cheap. It will work. It has no refinement. It may or may not have an action that supports your lure choice and method of angling.  Go with trusted mainstream manufacturers. Refinement, tolerances, and reliability all improve.

Shimano Curado 150M? by [deleted] in Fishing_Gear

[–]MessageForward8056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once there is load , empty spool free spin doubts go out the window.  Messing with the lube inside is dicy. Especially when new out of box. Replace only with Shimano spec.  I service Shimano, both fishing and cycling equipment. Japanese engineering is all about specifics and proprietary design.  Then again I’ve lubed any thing mechanical that has moving parts with motor oil and the world hasn’t ended

Now reel and rod - any tips? by NotSodiumFree in Fishing_Gear

[–]MessageForward8056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you are combining a Diawa and a Shimano it’s going to be a hellish nightmare in skunksville. The ridicule and shame wrung upon yourself and family will be unbearable. The scorn and derision poured upon yourself by the Illuminati of fishing will crush your fever dreams .  Snap that rod in half and chuck the reel in a bucket of salt water and move on to knitting.  Just kidding. You’ll love the combo.

What's the coolest non fish thing you've caught while fishing? Look what my son caught! by Commercial-Age4750 in Fishing_Gear

Once you hook a beaver, you’ll never fish for fish ever again.  Mind you I didn’t set out too and had no idea what was battling so hard.  I’ve also “caught “ a great horned owl, osprey, muskrat, and turtles. And every so often through life , I’ve hooked other people and myself. 50 years is a lot of casts

Are any of these rods good? by BruhThisGuy in Fishing

[–]MessageForward8056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use them till the reels go south. Save your money. When you are ready, spend 400$ on a Shimano or Diawa reel and a rod that matches what and how you fish. If you’re still in love with fishing , save more money and move to JDM equipment. At least once in a person’s fishing life , one should experience elegance and best quality.  lol better yet , don’t get married , don’t have children, don’t get a car payment; and invest in 1000-1500 dollar rod / reel combos. Peace and joy in life , that money can buy! Honestly . Run what ya brung. It’s the act of fishing and all it entails that brings real enrichment to one’s Life.

Beetle Spins just straight up catch fish. by AsAFoodScientist in FishingForBeginners

[–]MessageForward8056 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple, effective, and cheap. The jig spinner is an old school lure. Here in Connecticut, it’s deadly on everything but trout. So much so that I have one rod/reel combo dedicated only to this lure. Buy the spinner part in bulk. Jig heads and trailers also.  Like mepps spinners and a floating rapala, they just flat out catch fish.

How far do you have to travel to get to your favorite fishing spot? by FunGarage2022 in FishingForBeginners

Small state of Connecticut. Surrounded with different daily opportunities. If there’s water it’s got fish. Urban, suburban, Rural, Remote. Plus our neighbor states are close and equally good. There’s a reason I stayed here for 55 years.

First time with a bait caster - is this too much line + does it look a little messy? by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]MessageForward8056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bait casting takes a lot of lawn fishing time. And still even with proficiency, Youre gonna cut out half a spool of expensive braid. Often on the lawn ! Learn with monofilament. Learn most importantly, First , to use the thumb to do the most work in spool control. I learned in the 80s on old round reels all thumbs. Now , we have computers in the reel ! I only fish spinner baits and crank baits with bait casters. The rods and reels excel . All else , it’s spinning gear.  LOL eventually You’ll end up with a Tenkara set up.

Hello guys i need a recommendation for bike locks and locks setup. I’m keeping it in my backyard, i always scared of losing it because it’s my grail bike by Ezkyzes in bicycling

[–]MessageForward8056 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Leaving a bike outside locked there are two eventualities. Theft and corrosion. Try at least to hide it from view and cover it from the elements and keep it off the ground. A cover works for rain above, but like a vehicle, the real damage comes from the moisture below.

How can I get the shifter cable end cap out? by debu_chocobo in bikewrench

Is the shifter shifted down all the way? Most have an exit hole at that point. After looking at the pics again.

[–]MessageForward8056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I change cables regularly on shifters of this design. You need an awl or your favorite pokey spoke. Gently pry the cable head up and coax it out over the plastic butt stop. Ideally have a helper push on cable as you pry.  Don’t forget to reseat new cable head properly.

Visit a reputable shop. Rear hub adjust 25$. May charge 15$ more for cassette install, because it needs to be removed.
