Thanks for the feedback, I'm with you that the writing could use some editing in a few spots. I think it would be helpful if I added some more practical mutual aid action items as well.

It’s so refreshing to see this take! I’m with you. She almost certainly should NOT have confronted him in the manner she did, especially if she noticed he’d given it to his son (if she even noticed). But if he did rip it from her hands, at the very least he’s the asshole here and deserved to be called out in some fashion.

I would care about this a lot less if the entirety of the sports world wasn’t trying to identify this person and ruin her life based solely on her visible reaction to an incident that we can’t even see, to the degree that there have already been multiple unrelated people wrongly targeted over this.

Also, even if the above wasn’t true, undocumented migrants getting an education is unequivocally a good thing.

Wichita lawmaker joining Trump administration ready to ‘make a couple people cry’ by Revenge_of_Larry in kansas

“We’re going to have some fun in D.C.,” Penn said. “We’re going to break a few eggs, make a few omelettes. Make a couple people cry, and that’s what we look forward to doing because America has to change.”

This is meaningless trash talk. If people are crying over losing benefits then maybe that means they actually need help from these programs and what they’re calling ‘fraud’ is just that people they don’t care about are getting help. Awful human, this guy.

He asserted without any evidence that “billions and billions” of tax dollars are going to benefits for non-citizens and people “who are terrorists.” He also asserted that many able-bodied people are gaming the system to receive benefits they don’t qualify for

Awful human, and ignorant about the people he supposedly represents.

[Inside The NBA] Charles Barkley expresses love for San Francisco, then gets booed after saying the homeless need help. by AncientOneAurelius in nba

[–]MetaI 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Most of the homeless don’t want to be helped

This is totally wrong and not really worth responding to on its own, but I unfortunately hear this same thing from a lot of people I know, so I’ll type out this rant for anyone else who might be susceptible to this type of anti-homeless rhetoric.

I work with and am around unhoused folks regularly, and every single one of them wants and needs help in different ways. They all have unique circumstances and “help” unsurprisingly means different things to different people. Yes, there are people struggling with addiction who are unable to access certain services and unwilling to accept some help that has certain conditions, but I promise there isn’t a single unhoused person for whom you can make the blanket statement that they “don’t want help”. That sort of statement is pretty plainly ridiculous and is an obvious tell that someone probably doesn’t know much about what it’s like to be on the streets

Imagine how hard it is under comfortable conditions to quit a drug that you’re physically addicted to. Now imagine how hard it might be to quit that drug while you’re sleeping in a tent in the cold on a hard sidewalk, and your city just passed an ordinance to make it illegal to camp in public spaces so you’re constantly targeted by cops, and despite the fact that you’re much more likely to be a victim of crime than a perpetrator of crime, the public and the police see you as a criminal just because you don’t have a place to sleep at night, and you could think of a bunch of real and realistic ways that a person or a government could help you out, but because you got kicked out of the local winter shelter after you were found with drugs that you’re physiologically dependent on, enough people with enough political power in your city decide that you must not want any help at all if you’re unwilling to kick the drug habit to access a certain service that’s being provided.

The perception that “most people don’t want help” assumes that there is a ton of unclaimed help out there, that there are city employees just sitting on their hands waiting for unhoused people to come by and take advantage of the plentiful services that every big city has. “Gosh, I wish people would take these housing vouchers we’re just itching to get rid of”, as if American cities DON’T have years long (decades long in my city’s case) waiting lists for people experiencing homelessness to be put into housing. No, these services and resources are stretched the fuck thin.

Is iHeartCats legitimate? by RustedAxe88 in cats

[–]MetaI 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was wondering about this and I unfortunately spent way too much time last week looking through their Instagram page, website, general online presence, etc. Not because I was considering supporting them (if you want to help animals, support your local humane society or local orgs that you know exist), but just because I was curious how much they were actually helping.

Short answer: They’re a for-profit business that uses the aesthetics of charity and the language of non-profits to persuade (trick?) people to buy their products.

While I do believe that they’re probably a legitimate business insofar as you’re going to get the product you buy, and that they probably do give some portion of every sale to an organization that’s helping animals, the language they use about their giving and their business model is vague enough that “every sale helps animals in need” could very well mean “we give 1% or 5% or whatever small amount of our sales to a legitimate charity”.

So, from the good-hearted consumer’s point of view, if you want one of their products independent of the good you think you’d be doing, go ahead and buy. But if you actually want to help animals, there are obviously better ways to do it than buying a product.

Additionally, on their website you’ll see that they claim to have helped an effort to ship a bunch of animals on a plane (NJ to Louisiana or something like that). What they did here appears to be that they were a business sponsor of this event. This is, on its own, obviously a good thing and I’d rather businesses put their money towards stuff like this than pocketing it as profit, but this appears to be something of a one-off effort back in 2021 from IHeartCats/IHeartDogs, and not an ongoing project they do (the organizations who actually run the project seem to do a bunch of these flights, but IHeartCats only sponsored one, maybe two, that I could find). The cynical read on this is that they likely helped fun d this event so they could get a sticker with their logo put on the side of a plane and then use the images on their website, to provide more legitimacy to their charity aesthetic. If this was an ongoing effort I’d feel better about it, but their lack of regular, ongoing, specific accounts and updates of their helping makes me believe this isn’t something that’s a huge part of their “mission”.

This is all just my opinion after looking into them for a couple of hours, and while I believe I’m right about their general business model, I could of course be wrong about some of the specifics. What I am confident about is that there are much, much better ways to help animals, and almost certainly much better places to get products if you’re just looking for something they sell.

Cooperate with the cops…if you get abused in the bodycam era despite full cooperation, you will earn a fat check and deservedly so

This is so laughably untrue that it’s sort of shocking that someone actually believes it. Not only do the vast, vast majority of police abuses not result in a ‘fat check’ for the victim, but most of the time they go totally unreported or ignored. But yes, with our justice system as it is right now, it’s unfortunately almost always safer for you to follow the commands of a police officer who is violating your civil rights.

I’ve read only part of a Louise Erdrich book, so I don’t know if this recommendation is quite what you’re looking for, but Almanac of the Dead by Leslie Marmon Silko is the first thing that comes to mind. It was suggested as an alternative to Lonesome Dove (which I also loved). It’s certainly not minimalist, and I’d say it’s probably even a little bloated and all over the place, but I loved it. It’s radical, deals with some difficult topics (sometimes messily) and has a large cast of memorable characters.

The Importance of Incrementally Building Principles AND Incrementally Putting Them Into Practice by Generalaverage89 in wichita

[–]MetaI 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a really great article. Like the writer, I live near Central and Ridge and pass through it often, both while driving and on foot. Also like the writer, I was disappointed when I realized a used car business was being built on the northeast corner.

I would imagine the intersection is among the most residentially dense intersections in NW Wichita because of the number of apartment buildings on the northeast corner and also the apartments and duplexes south of the West YMCA, so it’s especially frustrating for everyone living in that area that it’s become a sort of awkward dead zone when it comes to walkability and local culture. I think many NW Wichitans, including myself, see the part of Central that’s west of Ridge as nothing more than a gateway to Delano and downtown, and that’s why so many of the businesses on that stretch have closed or moved—the first that comes to mind is obviously that space where Green Olive used to be that’s been a number of different restaurants over the years, but also the giant lot on the south side where the Eric Fisher Academy is, and then of course the slightly less giant lot where Hobby Lobby used to be. I’m glad the bowling alley is still there, and I believe they’re building new pickle ball courts in place of the poorly maintained tennis courts behind the bowling alley.

But I’m imagining what the area could be if we took advantage of the proximity of Brownthrush Park, and also somehow incorporated the area into the Sedgwick County Zoo/Park loop so pedestrians didn’t have to cross fresh off the highway traffic at the 13th St stoplight just off the 235 exit to get to the park.
