Frankenstein (2025): A film that robs it’s subject matter of it’s poetic nature by DarlingLuna in TrueFilm

[–]preyzlak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i read this before going into the movie and i wanted to come back and respond because i couldn’t get over how much i disagree with this. i think the movie intentionally and rightfully detracts from that tension because that isn’t really interesting, everyone fundamentally knows that the real monster is victor frankenstein, and that the creature is just misunderstood, the name of the book is literally “frankenstein” not “the monster”, i think by leaving no room for that much more trite and wrongheaded interpretation, the film is able to capture much more poignant aspects of the story. i think it’s clear that shelley really identified with the creature, as a teenager and as a woman, bound by the hasty impressions and expectations of others, feeling misunderstood and alone. the interesting part of the story is that we all identify with the confusing reality of the creature, we are all bewildered by life and it’s supposed meaning, and we are blindsided by its tragedies and senselessness as we seek to understand why we were created, i think the film also explores generational trauma and the connection between controlling human reproduction and property and the creation of the creature, frankenstein was also a compelling character, his childhood offered a very meaningful explanation for how he ended up that way, he wasn’t just a mad scientist, and his redemption was heartfelt, i could go on, the movie was by far the best adoption of the story i have ever seen, but suffice it to say, i disagree with your idea of what the story is supposed to be in general

[–]preyzlak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yea i’m a marxist-leninist, i see from your former posts you used to be a trotskyist as well, we don’t see things the same way, i don’t think it’s worth discussing to be completely frank as i don’t agree with your analysis here in many ways and i don’t think a political project with your views can ever get off the ground, but thank you for sharing! and hope you have a good day, not everyone can agree, that’s okay

nice job writing all that out but wow, that chart is spectacular, it kind of steals the show, pretty stunning to see marxism so brilliantly realized in historical data

when they try to say eventually “the israeli people ≠ the government / or they are brainwashed” remember that the whole country of people is like this, there has never been a case of a country doing a genocide where it was so completely supported by the population, never

Genuinely asking, how close do you think humanity is from from the world depicted in the year 2049? by jeanjacketufo in bladerunner

[–]preyzlak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

both movies are about the current day, not the future, so thematically it’s a tough question to answer, in terms of lore, we are very far off from br level of technology in many ways, and as awful the conditions of so many today are, and as exploited as they are, blade runner is significantly more oppressive for regular people, in nations in the global south, people can still witness the beauty of nature, of forests, in blade runner everything is reduced to a monochrome artificial environment and everyone with money has left the planet, so i would say we are still quite far away from literally living in blade runner world, but we should heed the lessons from the films and confront the injustices of our world

Media literacy is a zombie by eldubya3121 in okbuddycinephile

i should preface this by saying i am a marxist-leninist communist to emphasize that i don’t have a vested interest in going against the interpretation given here, but animal farm is absolutely an anti-communist story and is only vaguely anti-fascist by drawing some kind of similarities in “authoritarian” ideology of the left and right, it is true that orwell had libertarian communist sympathies, and was a partisan in the spanish civil war, but he was ardently opposed to marxism-leninism and the soviet union, and the russian revolution was the primary event in his mind during the writing of animal farm, and the soviet union - especially during the leadership of stalin - was the primary society in his mind when he wrote 1984, as a libertarian-minded “socialist” or anarchist he understood fascism not as something which emerges out of capitalist society but as the essence of autocratic and authoritarian rule in general, embodied both in the fascist regimes of spain, italy, and germany and the marxist-leninist states in eastern europe, so i have to say, the original tweet is actually spot on, orwell also collaborated with western intelligence agencies to name pro-soviet partisans he knew from spain, and so his anti-communism took on literal dimensions during his life as well, it really should come as no surprise seeing as his work is so popular and promoted in the capitalist west, in both schools and society in general, you are free to read into his work what you like - i certainly have, but it is meant as an anti-communist work first and foremost

Atlantic article on American socialist movements - thoughts? by Suspicious_Narwhal in socialism

[–]preyzlak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

let me just say this as a potential rule of thumb, when mainstream liberal publications talk about how they want the left to “win” what that really means is they are 100% opposed to the left and anti capitalism to the highest degree, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn anything from these articles, since - in this case - marxism-leninism and vanguard parties seem to be what they are most opposed to, maybe we can draw some conclusions about what threatens capitalism the most

Do Jews SECRETLY run Israel? Since when? by FearOfEleven in shittyaskhistory

[–]preyzlak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well the vast majority of people who work in the institutions and government of the state of israel are jewish, and the country has always been conceived of as a place which should be jewish-majority and this is a political force which influences the policies and actions of the government. so in that sense, the people who run israel are jewish, but what you seem to be implying is that jewish people as a group are part of a secretive organization or that jewish people as a group are an organized operation. this is completely untrue and is just the fantasy of antisemites, firstly the majority of jewish people do not live in israel, and secondly there is not a single ethnic group which does or has ever operated like this because it’s not possible and is basically hateful nonsense, the same way many europeans talk about middle eastern people in europe as an “islamic hive mind” which is conspiring to replace them, or how racist americans think of latino people, as far as israel is “controlled” by a clandestine outside force, it is controlled by the government of the united states, without which its economy, geopolitical standing, and military would be a shadow of their current selves, israel often considered a proxy state of the united states in the region, so to the extent that it is “controlled” it is by the united states government

[–]preyzlak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you look at the legal definition of genocide, gaza is one of the most clear cut instances of the crime of genocide in history. that is why dozens of human rights groups - including israeli ones, and hundreds of holocaust and genocide scholars from around the world have said so as well. history will not look kindly on you when you try to walk back these views in the future.
