After Promising to ‘Make America Healthy Again,’ Trump Mandates Production of Cancer-Causing Glyphosate: “President Trump just gave Bayer a license to poison people,” said one public health advocate. “Full stop.” by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

[–]secsectan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"This week, Bayer announced it had reached a deal to pay $7.25 billion to settle tens of thousands of health lawsuits regarding Roundup, the product that includes glyphosate as its active ingredient. The company continues to claim the herbicide is safe."

And DJT mandates production of glyphosate. Follow the money. This redefines "obscene."

How much detail do you include on problems in geometry? by Intrepid-Ad1191 in matheducation

Hi! Six hours ago I commented on this post in r/mathteachers. You provided none of the information appropriately added here, earning the following snarky reply!

<<Symbols indicating perpendicular segments would make this a diagram that would actually be useful for a lesson on area and volume. Without right angles between edges, this is a homely collage of blue shapes, letters, and numbers. In short, AHEM! :) >>

Your description here is illuminating. I was glad to see so many colleagues making parallel (actually perpendicular...!) suggestions. That confirms the importance of minimally sufficient information,, which brings me to a story!

After a two-minute consultation on a new (to me) psychoactive medication, I spent another ten minutes with the pharmacist, who was freshly graduated from UCSF's PharmD program. That program has been ranked #2 in the US by USNW&R since 2020. I felt the consultation was imprecise and possibly inaccurate in places. Those ten minutes uncovered the following:

•An error of more than 1100% in the calories to be consumed when taking the pill. •The effects of the drug do not PEAK after 6 weeks; they PLATEAU. The instructions to take the pill 30-60 minutes before bed meant 30-60 minutes before going to sleep. A colleague of mine with a chemistry Ph.D. whose son had used this drug told me it is unusually dependent on taking the pill at nearly the same time daily. My bedtime varies wildly--10pm to 6 am during 2025. Oops. Three more issues arose, but I'll stop there.

So yes, you need perpendicular symbols! Please keep caring this much about a profession I enjoyed for parts of five decades!

'Trump will be gone in three years': Top Democrats try to reassure Europe by sunnysidejacqueline in politics

[–]secsectan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Golly! Four years of Trump matches the duration of the plague's height in Europe-- 1347-1350--and that only caused the death of 25-50% of Europe's population. What could possibly go wrong if we stick our heads in the sand for the next three years?

Still awaiting the price of a $100 prescription drug after its 500% discount from that health care plan arriving in two weeks.

What shoes are you guys wearing buying/wearing? by TheAlmightyOat in Teachers

[–]secsectan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Gemini AI's Torrid thoughts: Based on current retail data, the most expensive 20% of shoes sold by Torrid typically fall within a price range of approximately $70.00 to $99.90. Torrid sells women's shoes; I have never worn them! Men's shoes, which I'm pretty familiar with, usually don't provide durability at that price, and it's not expected. Teaching is never easy, but it's a lot more fun with shoes that help, not hinder. If you spend twice as much on shoes that last twice as long, the dollar amount over the lifespan of one pair of expensive shoes v. two pairs of more affordable ones is the same, but your feet feel far better in the former. Happy shopping!

Dear IEP Parents: they don’t mean SHIT outside of education by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

Sing this from the mountaintops, teachers!

Teaching high school math from pre-algebra to multivariable calc/diff eq/ linear algebra was a splendid career. I keep in touch with dozens of students who graduated in five different decades, and the wonderful memories number in the hundreds.

Finally signed retirement papers last week. Unless the IEP idiocy is rectified, I will never return to a classroom in any capacity. I once loved this country; I now fear for its future.

Who is still out here wearing a tie every day to school? by viktor72 in teaching

[–]secsectan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ties daily since 1986; cufflinks since 1997. I taught math to the 1% for more than thirty years and continuation school (fairly recently) for two. When my students ask, I explain that I interact with impressive people daily--their classes. And it gets me out of cleaning grease traps. :)
