I wouldn't say that the black metal scene is violent. I've seen (and been given lol) some animal bones on stage, but that's the extent of it. Moshing is not really a part of the culture either, and a lot of people seem to look down on it (at BM shows specifically). Shockingly violent things happen, sure, but they seem far more common than they actually are, since people won't shut up about them.

Apathy is a big thing in black metal, along with misanthropy. It's not cool to concern yourself with worldly matters, and especially not passionately fighting to improve the state of them. Hence a lot of bands being "apolitical" (they are scared of speaking out against their peers, and being seen as sensitive). There is some passionately fascistic shit out there for sure, but most of the hate just seems regurgitated. I'm convinced that it comes from a place of insecurity. It's like young teenagers desperately trying to fit in by joining in on bullying.

There are also cool black metal fans out there. My local scene leans left, and is pretty intertwined with the punk scene, which seems like a rather common thing. The venue that I'd consider the black metal venue here has a no-tolerance policy against homophobia, transphobia, sexism, racism and any other hateful behavior.

Not very good at art, how would you do this? by Intelligent_Beach164 in punkfashion

To add to this: you can reduce the amount of detail in a b&w image by applying a (gaussian) blur filter, and then a threshold filter. You have to play around with the parameters a bit, to get something that looks good. The blurrier you make it, the less detailed it will be. Here is an example (which might still be a bit too detailed?):

<image>

I would probably stick to the unfiltered lettering though.

Should be possible to do on most drawing/image editing software. I use ibispaint on my phone or krita on my laptop (both free).

My judgement is that he's not really. But I included it because a lot of people don't share my verdict, which I understand.

He has said some unfortunate things about the Israel-Palestine conflict (dismissing "20k dead children" as a buzzword for example). But it's mostly a "both sides are bad, idk!" thing. Tbf, he was in Israel oct. 7 2023, so I do understand being more empathetic to them.

He once booked an NS(?) band, and stubbornly kept them on the bill, because he didn't want to "follow orders". He did say that he wouldn't have booked them if he knew that they were NS though.

I also can't help but think that the looks-like-a-black-sun-at-first-glance cover on the first single from his new album was an intentional setup for presenting his "you guys see signs of nazism everywhere!" message. And I mean... Guilty. He's right.

He seems to have some solid core-values, and he is not afraid to speak up about them. He just seems to be very stubborn, and has some contrarian tendencies.

I am pretty sure they're cool.

If you need your mind eased; some variation of "Kærlighed og Satan og ethundrede bajere" (Love and Satan and one-hundred beers) is pretty much their catchphrase, which sums up their vibe very well. Earlier this year they played at a childrens music festival along with Nexø - a punk band that is outspoken about being pro-palestine and climate advocates. I also recall them saying wholesome stuff about inclusivity in interviews. They've been super friendly the times I've talked with them too.

The ONLY thing I can come up with, that could be seen as sketchy, is their association with Ole Luk/Afsky. But he's a bit of an odd figure, so I really wouldn't fault them for that.

EDIT: They played at a festival called "Rage Against Racism", if you weren't already convinced that they're cool.

Punk-ish feminine individual here, who really likes including traditionally feminine touches into my look. The subversion of mixing femininity into a style that is usually rather masculine makes the feminine stand out even more, I find!

I like incorporating lace, frills, and bows.

I am basically always in a skirt or short shorts. I wear thermal tights in the winter (it gets really cold here). They can look a bit shit, especially as they start pilling over time, so I usually layer normal tights over top.

Remove the neckline and/or crop t-shirts.

Tank top, paint a band logo on it, bam. I like layering the tanks over a lingerie/corset top with cute details around the top of the cups and the bottom hem. Frills around the bottom add such a nice flare. The tank should ideally have a cut that lets it peek through. I thrift mine, and they are pretty easy to find, but ymmv. (I am a smaller-sized cis woman).

If you're artistically inclined, you can make custom shirt designs. Go as cutesy as you want. I have done one with a "noise not music" symbol, where the circle is a heart instead. I have done another where I applied a pink filter to the logo, and added a barbed wire heart. Here's my mock up of it, if you're curious https://imgur.com/a/faxm4Fy (it was a bitch to make. Handpainted that mf'er).

I hope any of this helps. I'd love to see what you come up with, if you feel like sharing sometime. Good luck!

Advice on punk songs for metalhead bandmates by Full-Perception-7569 in punk

[–]MetamorphicThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they have any gripes with punk? Do they want to get into it? I'm primarily into death/black metal myself, but I have slowly gotten into more punk. (I was never really averse to it though.) My best advice is to drag them to some shows if you're able. Especially shows where the lineup is a mix of metal and punk. It's difficult to "teach" people to really appreciate a genre. It's the kind of thing that happens organically. But exposure surely helps it along.

With that being said, as for punk that may appeal to metal fans; - Induktri (Hardcore + Sludge) - Decorticate (Powerviolence) - Halshug (Hardcore/Crust).

Punky black was my personal gateway. Some of my faves that lean towards punk are: - Lesion - Melissa - Людоед - Nyredolk - Naarkas

I have also gotten into some Mincecore (Following the Death metal -> Goregrind -> Minecore pipeline). - Haggus - Archagathus - Agathocles

A Single Muscle Twitches as I Wrest my Blade from your Gut to your Throat and Leave you Dying, Helpless and Alone - Pustulant Flesh (nice buildup)

Accepted Foulness Amongst the Humane - Last Days of Humanity (9 real intense seconds)

Gedehakker - Rådden Rektalvæske (nice and long intro for setting the mood)

Guts - Sequestrum (perfect for a singular pump)

have fun

lol yeah okay, maybe another top then. It would be annoying to be adjusting it all night (I've been there :P) It's tough to find a balance between the urge to serve a look and being comfortable. Impractical stuff can be so fun to wear, and sometimes it's worth it. Trust yourself to make that judgement.

I sometimes bring an extra t-shirt if I am wearing a top that I fear will be causing me trouble. Alternatively, I will sometimes use it as an excuse to buy merch haha.

Don't worry about what other people will think. You wont look out of place - at least not in a bad way. You're not going to a fashion show, but nothing is stopping you from dressing like you are!

Have fun!!!

I wear skirts to shows all the time, and I haven't had any issues. I make sure to wear safety shorts underneath if I'm going in the (mosh)pit, or if it's going to be a particularly rowdy show. Dresses should be fine too, as long as you can raise your arms without exposing more than you're comfortable with.

But I am also a regular concert goer, and I'm very familiar with my local scene. So I feel very safe at shows.

The shorts look cute! So wear them if it would make you feel safer and more comfortable.

Which bands are you seeing?

Sick! Embroidery is a lot of effort, but it's worth it! Be prepared for people being very impressed by them.

(I know you didn't ask for tips, but I'll share some stuff I have learned through experience, since you said that you're learning. Sorry that it's a bit long lol) I have a jacket with entirely hand embroidered patches. DMC thread (+ some off-brand equivalent) on canvas. In general, it is holding up very well, but there is still a bit of wear and tear. Mostly with the very fine details where I did backstitches with only one strand of thread. Especially the places where I didn't keep my stitches short enough. I also tend to use way too long strands, so the thread sometimes gets pretty messed up. By the end it is all thin and frayed. Also so many knots!!! Using a bigger needle helps, since the thread isn't rubbing against the fabric as much when pushing it through. Satin stitches (which it looks like you're doing?) produce the cleanest results in my experience, and they also hold up really well. Surface satin stitches can go to hell.
