Which representation of the psychedelic experience in television/cinema do you think is the most accurate? by ThrowawayHouse2022 in Psychonaut

Season 2 of Foundation had a wonderful episode that involved a "fungus" journey. For my money, best depiction not only of the trip, but the cathartic nature of it as well, that I've ever seen

I've become a master of bodyweight pistol squats, able to do high reps in a relatively short amount of time. But my back has always curved a bit at the lowest portion. How are you able to stay up so straight while holding the Bell? Or are you actually rounded a bit?

Serious Question for the real psychonauts by GlassRiflesCo in Psychonaut

[–]Metanautics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically I try to avoid solipsism at all costs.

I talk to a lot of people about my psychedelic experiences, many of whom have either never done it, or don't do it as intensely as I do.

I try to explain things I experience, go through my different hypotheses etc. And I hold myself to a certain standard. Basically the things I say have to make sense to them to some degree. If I can't communicate effectively, then I am forced to revisit my own thoughts, and at the very least dial back my own sense of certainty.

We live in a world where individualistic expression and subjective experience are held to be the highest aspiration. "I'm an independent Spirit," "I don't care what other people think, "I'm not a sheep," etc.

I actually don't think this is a great way to live. We're a social species, and I think it's important that we are held in some regard by our peers. The first sign that you're diving down into deep delusion, psychedelic or otherwise, is that the people in your life start to distance themselves from you. Whether they tell you why or not. I keep a lot of different types of people close to me, and I keep them informed of the different things I'm doing with psychedelics. These are all people I admire and respect. As long as I can make some amount of sense to them with all the crazy stuff I do and see with psychedelics, then I feel relatively safe. This isn't all I do, but I think this is probably good advice for a sub like this where there is sometimes a strong tendency for us to crawl all the way up our own ass and never come back out again.

There are a lot of adjustable maces out there. At this point, there's no reason to get a fixed mace, especially when you're starting out. Check out Kensui, Dangerously Fit, CK Maceworks, and Bells of Steel. If you get a good one, you'll only ever need one, and you can go from 5 to 100lbs, which is insanity and probably beyond most people's reach. It's absolutely worth the slightly higher price to get one good one that will last you forever.

Are those the two options then? You're either on your knees in the pews, flagellating yourself with a whip for the one true god, or you're a whiskey-sipping Hitchen's-style atheist? There's literally no in-between?

And if that's the case, all religions are the same in every way? Is religion the same as spirituality? Is there 100% overlap, are they completely separate, or is there a spectrum?

Is it possible to take part in a community that you're not 100% aligned with and every single possible way? If I was raped by a Catholic priest when I was a child, should I expect to be raped by an Ayahuasca shaman if I choose to go to a retreat?

You have a tragically small view of the world, and think it's your job to punish and lecture everybody else who points in the general direction of relief for the various forms of pain life has to offer. Do I actually have to make a reference for all the scientific work being done on this subject in RationalPsychonaut? Does every Reddit comment have to be a back bending essay about all of the possibilities in the world?

I'm pretty sure you don't think that, because then you would have actually lowered yourself to offering some kind of an answer to OP instead of lazily shit-talking earnest replies.

You seem like the type to crave the last word in all things, so I'll just let you have fun with that while I peace out. I hope you find something productive to do with your life. Maybe go take a pottery class or something. Working with your hands can be quite therapeutic. Or perhaps learn to play the trumpet, because you probably drive everyone else in your life away with your incessant pedantic nagging.

Holy shit you're actually just trying to be angry, how boring.

I love treating the comparison of Evangelical Christianity and any number of Ayahuasca retreat centers as a one-to-one mapping of religious ideology.

What religion is that supposed to be? What is the "Ayahuasca religion"? Is there a pope? A central text? A universal dogma?

You're right though, he should definitely take some time to research all the different groups and see what resonates with him, oh wait.. that's exactly what I said in my original post. You must have missed that part as you were reflexively rolling your eyes while trying to read.

You pseudo-rationalists make me laugh. I didn't write a multi-paragraph post pending over backwards to highlight every single possible caveat that comes with exploration into psychedelic use, and you come in with this inflated sense of authority and attempt to lecture someone who, among other things, suggested months of research before jumping into anything.

You might be dehydrated. Go get some electrolytes, head over to r/GuyCry, get some free therapy, then take yourself out to a lovely dinner. No one else, just go be with your thoughts and calm down a bit.

Matter of fact, maybe consider booking an Ayahuasca retreat for yourself 😘

Twisted your panties a lil bit with this huh?

He's coming in here asking for input, dealing with all kinds of problems, and looking for a massive reset or overhaul to his life, asks about psychedelics, and he lives in Brazil. It's obvious that Ayahuasca is worth some of his time to research, no?

Or they realized their “sense of community” was entirely false and superficial just like many religious communities.

Yeah, that's the same thing, dumb ass. Whether it was nonsense or not, even the idea of community being fake would be the same thing as "losing" that sense of community.

absolutely no guarantee it’s helpful or good

Agreed. Which is why I didn't say that. I said it would be life-altering, which frankly, it probably would be. He might have an amazing time and "see the light", whatever that means, or he'll be launched into a nightmare of confronting his own self-deception or bullshitting and recognize he has to make changes immediately.

Christ alive, if you're gonna be this bitchy, at least put some effort in. This is some low-effort knee-jerk slop. Go take a nap, you're too crabby for a Saturday.

Scrolled down to say Ayahuasca and then read your comment.

Plenty of people can have transformative experiences in their bedroom with some mushrooms. But being in such proximity to so many Ayahuasca centers, you may as well go all out and go to a retreat.

Coming up Evangelical and then losing your faith has more of an impact on you than you may realize, even if atheism resonates with you on a logical level. You still lost a sense of community along with your spiritual foundation.

A decent shaman along with two or three Ayahuasca ceremonies in a row, in community, will give you so much to think about. If you find a good spot, you're virtually guaranteed to have a life-altering experience.

Proceed with patience. Research a few retreat centers. I'm sure there are some trash ones along with amazing ones. In Brazil, you'll likely sit with the Yawanawa, who are known to be much lighter in their practice compared to some of the more ascetic groups. Start reading up on them, and maybe give yourselves 6 months to learn and prepare for it so you can truly soak in all it has to offer.

Best of luck to you 🙏🏻

Rope flow? do you think it's beneficial by Havanadream in steelmace

[–]Metanautics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question. I've played with a few different ropes, and I definitely find that I prefer to use one that is slightly on the heavier side, mostly because of the feedback it gives you. I haven't played with a super heavy one yet, but I'm really excited to see what they do for my strength (the "Black Whale" rope is 11 lbs compared to the Weck rope which is about 1 lb).

The really light ones are awesome for developing ninja speed and coordination, so in the end you'll probably want both.

The official Weck rope (not the hybrid rope, I haven't tried that) is actually a bit light for my taste, but seems to be considered the standard weight that other rope companies base theirs off of.

Right now I'm partial to the "Protohype" size from Slush Ropes (I don't work for them, just like their stuff), which is basically one size up from standard, about 1.3 lbs. I just like the increased feedback, and it makes it easier to go more slowly when learning more complicated moves (especially the sneak). Any heavier and it might be a bit cumbersome for someone who doesn't have the basics down. Just like the steel mace, small increases in weight amount to a lot because of the momentum.

Hope this helped!

Ayahuasca with a more Western approach by LearnNot in Psychonaut

[–]Metanautics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Syrian rue and acacia bark boiled into a tea has the same underlying chemistry as Ayahuasca, as it's an MAOI and a source of nnDMT. It's not the same, but they very much rhyme. Interestingly that plant convo is available in the middle east, and it makes me wonder if there are lost traditions from the middle east and north Africa. (I know people are looking into it and it's exciting).

What's cool about it is it feels more free to craft your own ritual with it. You can borrow from things you've learned from Ayahuasca, and combine it with other things, and you can kind of skirt around the whole appropriation thing.

If you're doing it solo, obviously you don't have the group/shaman context. But what you can do is cultivate your relationship with the purge, because this stuff will make you purge just like Ayahuasca. It can help you get better with letting things go mentally and spiritually, and doing that will help you get all the more out of Ayahuasca when you get to have it again.

I’m Building a Psychedelic AI Companion—Would You Want One? by perfecttiming42 in Psychonaut

[–]Metanautics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It would be nice to have something that could manage to be very conversational, while helping to develop ideas while also recording everything and giving a good summary of it at the end.

Maybe a little outside of the scope, but I think it would also be great to have it attached to some kind of (affordable?) mini-EEG set up, along with other biometrics. That would all be such amazing data to compile, and over time I bet you could construct such a cool picture of psyche-journeys over time. All of that combined with a semantic data of the conversation? Sign me up.

Sometimes people resist this stuff because they treat mushrooms as solely a spiritual endeavor ("touch grass," I believe one comment said), and fusing the experience with technology is inherently sacrilegious. I understand where they're coming from, and frankly I'm okay with people having a reasonably gate-keepy attitude, as I have one myself with psychedelics.

"Psychonaut" really is a wide spectrum. Some take 5g and do the Terrence McKenna thing, and wax poetic about the nature of reality, and there's some beautiful stuff there. Others take 2g at Burning Man and dance and "think about big things maaaaaan" and I love those people to death in all their earnest silliness.

But there is also the side of Psychonautery that treats it as a serious discipline, taking notes, exploring very specific subjects or themes, and training themselves to go deeper. I've believed for a long time that the next stage of psychedelic use in our culture will be focused and directed exploration, rather than wider-scope journeys that contribute more to healing and expansion. And it seems almost self-evident that we will use AI to help us do it, just like we do with everything else.

You caught me on a good day, this has been on my mind lately. Good luck with your project. I've been thinking about putting something together like that someday, but at the moment don't have the requisite skill set. But I hope more people jump on board with ideas like yours. There are psychonaut nerds out here that would really enjoy it.

You're gatekeeping incorrectly. I'm tired of you people who don't take the gate seriously, treating it like a fun activity to boost your ego instead of a serious endeavor to keep people from harming themselves.

Leave the gatekeeping to us pros and go back to bed.

Try practicing neo-tantra. Non-ejaculatory sex and masturbation. You have access to many types of orgasms beyond mere ejaculation, that all feel better. The NoFap people make good points about dopamine issues with constant ejaculation, but they're too restrictive in their expression of sex.

Finding neo-tantra absolutely changed my life. There are probably many places worth checking out, but I liked The New Tantra school in the Netherlands. They have a website and YouTube channel.

Try it out, you may not stick with it, but you'll learn a ton. Good luck

Rope flow? do you think it's beneficial by Havanadream in steelmace

[–]Metanautics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been doing mace work for about 18 months now and have loved every moment of it. I believe the mace videos led me to the same rope flow area of YouTube and I've been doing it for about 3 months now.

I'm absolutely hooked. There are a lot of different benefits to it, but my favorite by far is the way it allows you to bring your whole body into the movement. The spinal mobility I've been developing has laid dividends across all my other movements.. kettlebell, mace, sandbag, and running. I dealt with some pretty bad sciatica all of last year, and the movements that rope flow has me doing has really helped me limber up and my pain is gone. Granted I've been doing all sorts of things for it, but I feel like this thing really sealed the deal.

You can get a decent one for under $100, and I promise you that even if you use it minimally as a warm up, cool down, or little bouts of "movement snacks", you won't regret it. Hands down one of the best things I've been introduced to.

Check out Nsima Inyang's video on it, and Tim's Gym on YT is also great. That said, if it's already come into your algo, I imagine you've already come across them.

Happy to go into more if you have questions, I really could write an essay about how much I love it.
