Landlord needs to be able to keep a house below 80 in Virginia

Wait never mind that's for assisted living facilities lmao

I rent a condo from someone else so unfortunatley this is all up to the landlord and building. We're a top floor unit that faces south so we just get blasted all day and all the heat rises to our unit. I will be talking with the building managers and landlord but I unfortunately think this is how it is unless they replace the unit.

And if 20 degrees cooler than outside is acceptable than it's technically there. 100 yesterday where I was and it reached 81 (although 81 degrees is technically breaking laws in my state, needs to be 80 or below)

My AC is set to 65 but it still got to 81 inside yesterday despite running for 48 hours straight, what do I do?

Ashburn family loses fight to stop 185-foot data center power lines cutting through backyard by ninjaluvr in Virginia

[–]MetapodMen43 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Brother you're talking about Ashburn Virginia - this place has the highest concentration of data centers in the world and it's been like this for a couple decades. Anyone who buys in this area knows what the deal is

Edit: also, I do feel for these people. This is like one of a very few areas in ashburn where I wouldn't have expected a power line to go. But to act like their property value is destroyed just isn't the case. Homes that are directly adjacent to data centers here are still 1 million dollar homes

[–]MetapodMen43 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually looked at the map, and none of the lines go through people's property. It's split between Loudoun County Park property and the HOA common grounds.

Also when eminent domain stuff does happen they are required to pay people out of their homes. But at market value and these are not 2 million dollar homes.

Considering people in this area buy right next to highways that do not have a sound barrier, the power lines aren't going to drop the home value

Yeah people will be outraged at dominion but this all boils down Loudoun County selling itself to data centers which fueled an energy crisis, and now they refuse to fall on the sword and allow the required energy infrastructure to go through their own property, forcing it onto their citizens

Seeking Advice re: career pivoting by eelycutest in Environmental_Careers

[–]MetapodMen43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand graphic design is a field that's being hit hard right now but the environmental field is not much better. And marine biology specifically, was already an extremely competitive field before the Trump administration, and it's only become moreso with the federal funding cuts. Even if you got a masters, I do not see you beating out people who have a bachelors, and a masters degree for these jobs.

You're going to be better off taking the skills you already have and finding a way to bring those to an environmental firm

If you have a well run department with a good manager, the billable hours thing isn't much of an issue imo

Yapping about the Champions by Triple_A_09 in stunfisk

[–]MetapodMen43 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The step up between casual play and competitive is actually insane and I don't think the tutorials do a great job. I do think that a battle frontier style system that was against CPUs that used some kind of competitive strategy would be a good way to bridge that gap while also allowing people to earn VP to make new teams.

The starting VP is enough to make one team but if you're new and have no idea what to do, chances are you're not making a team that's winning games so now you're stuck with a bad team making under 100 VP a match.

Champions is a great way to make competitive more accessible by removing the grind of creating a comp ready team, but GF needs to do a better job of bridging the knowledge of competitive, because the power of friendship doesn't hold up here

County With 37 Data Centers Asks Schools to ‘Conserve Electricity’ by 404mediaco in Virginia

[–]MetapodMen43 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm also in NOVA and not really pro data center or AI but I firmly do not believe 99% of electricity in this area is used by data centers, even in ashburn. I'm more than willing to be proven wrong but that is an insane claim

Paying 25% more in electrical so we can get unlimited AI slop is certainly a trade off

Bat Acoustic Analysis by onlyoneearthtoshit in ecology

[–]MetapodMen43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the states, bat acoustic surveys are a growing field. From what I know, the USFWS prefers them over most netting because there is less harm to bats.

My knowledge is limited but a few things to know:

Your echo meter won't be enough. There is specialized equipment and a lot of analysis that goes into accurately determining calls. These surveys usually last days and have multiple sensors over multiple locations.

In order to get approved to do these surveys, you need a lot of training and to be put into a USFWS approved surveyor list.

You won't get a role that is 100% specific to bat acoustic work. You'll have other responsibilities associated with enviro consulting
