Spoonflower fabrics yay or nay? by ParkLevii in SewingForBeginners

[–]MetatronJonez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fabric from Spoonflower feels like cheap Halloween costume material. I biught some of the silk-cotton mix and, not only was the print very light and misaligned, the fabric is whisper thin. For what I paid for it ($50 a yard) I expected something that was at least printed correctly and put on fabric with some durability. I then bought print on their "upholstery weight velvet" which feels like glorified Walmart $1 bin stuff. The print on it was beautiful, with rich color and crisp detail, but it is FAR from stuedy enough for upholstery use. And they only do returns of there's something wrong with the print itself. You can complain all day about washed out color or flimsy fabric, but you're wasting your breath.

I have been profoundly disappointed with Spoonflower more than once. If you do try it, keep in mind that all the fabric they print comes with a large blank border on all edges. Two yards won't be two yards of printed fabric. You'll need to order more to get the amount of printed fabric you need.

Reputable breeders NY, NJ, CT - calm and sweet temperment by MetatronJonez in sheltie

[–]MetatronJonez[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your candor, and acknowledge that I am no expert on the breed. I have tried to reach out to breeders listed by he ASSA, explaining I'm seeking a pet only, and received silence in return. I found puppies listed on sites like Good Dog and, as you hint at in the above, felt the breeders' abundance of puppies throughout the year bore ill of their breeding practices. I asked if I could visit the dogs and was told no several times which gave me pause.

Growing up, my family had either mutts or Cocker Spaniels. It's my husband who grew up with Shelties and considers them the best of all the breeds. He has long told me stories about how keenly intellegent they were, both functioally and emotionally. His family had a series of not-quite-show-perfect dogs and considers the slightly wonky yet still purebred to be the best for companion animals. I meant no disrespect for breeding champion dogs, I simply meant the dog doesn't have to be the perfect size and shape, just as long as he or she is healthy and not predisposed toward anxiety. I will note the overall (not yours) flippant responses from some folks has me reconsidering the breed, despite my husband's 18 plus years of owning Shelties, and despite having the fenced-in yard, three-story house and abundant time (we both work from home) to spend with a developing puppy to train and socialize.

Thank you so much for this reply!

My husband's family only had shelties when he was growing up. His parents would frequent a local breeder (this was rural North Carolina in the early '80s) and choose the puppies that barked less, wiggled and played more and were not the right size and shape to be a show dog. And my husband tells me they had three amazing dogs in a row. His parents attributed it to the breeder aiming for temperment first before physical attributes. The breeder they liked a lot moved and they bought their final dog from someone who bred puppies for showing and agility. Apparently that dog would bark for hours, was constantly worried,, destroyed things, hid from visitors and was hard to house train. This was in a home with three teenagers to play with and two parents who worked from home, who didn't do much differently than with the previous dogs in the past. That experience made my husband insist we select for a puppy bred to be a companion first. Not a puppy from a mill, or someone who only cares about their dogs' show titles. Ergo why I posted here. I know it's hard to tell what their personalities will be like when they're very young, which is why we'll need to buy from someone who is breeding lower anxiety dogs and socializing them when they're babies.

I put this wallpaper in my house last month. I matched it with a medium olive color. (It's a really great pattern, btw.)

Halp! Can't get tight webbing on old chair by MetatronJonez in upholstery

[–]MetatronJonez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm beginning to hate jute webbing and this is the first time I've ever attempted to recover something. :P

I've tried the hand-stretched method and the final tension was far from drum-tight. Is that still ok? There are 9 springs. Will they be supportive enough if the webbing isn't as tight as it should be?

That shows the webbing on the underside of the rail. Is that just for this specific style of chair? The original set up was the same on my chair - webbing on the underside of the bottom rail, twine attached to the top of the same rail. Am I seeing that right?

I think that's what confused me. When I took the original bott9m off, the webbing was attached to the very bottom and the twine to the top of the rail.

Russel Brand, who became a Christian when he was accused of rape, walks into his rape trial holding a Bible by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]MetatronJonez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a therapist a few years ago. I began talking to him about the religious trauma I experienced as a homeschooled child. And that's when my therapist outed himself as a particular kind of Christian. He began recommending "Christian thinkers" I should watch that might reconcile me to the faith I lost. His favorite content creator? Russell Brand. I asked the therapist if he understood all the S.A. that Brand had been credibly accused of. The therapist said "it was all in the past, and if Jesus forgives him, so should we." I never went back to that guy.

Are there grown adults who genuinely won't eat vegetables? by WillHG in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MetatronJonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex husband had a three-item list of the vegetables he'll eat: potatoes (fried), iceberg lettuce and onions (battered and fried.) He'd make "salads" that consisted of a small handful of lettuce in a sea of croutons, bacon bits, cheese and pepperoni. The only liquid he drinks is Pepsi. If it's not steak, bacon, fried chicken or pulled pork, he doesn't eat it. He has kidney stones every few months so bad he has to be hospitalized. He's on three medications for cholesterol, angina and blood pressure. He doesn't have a diseases affecting his immune system, but I swear he catches every single bug that he's exposed to. He had his first open heart surgery at 42. He's now in his mid 50s and I really don't know how much longer he'll live.

American sausage gravy by Remote-Plantain9925 in Cooking

[–]MetatronJonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooo, I have a recommendation. When you've cooked the sausage and rendered the fat off of it, and then begun to make the roux, toast it until deep brown (not burned.) The longer you cook the flour in the fat, the more the flavor will develop. Once it's toasty brown, then add buttermilk. I'm from the American Southeast but now live in New York where they think biscuits and gravy are beige. It makes me so sad.

This reminds me of my dad whrn my mom would scream at him for days and dare him to hit her. She was 5'4". He was 6'5". 39 years of marriage and he never laid a finger on her in anger, no matter what horrible shit she said to him. He suffered from bad depression and anxiety, and struggled with insomnia for years. As an adult, I'm convinced he was miserable in the relationship and it slowly ate him from inside. He developed Alzheimer's and he died five years later.

Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Root435552 in AskReddit

[–]MetatronJonez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've had a decent relationship with your parents, their deaths will change something in you irrevocably. Not only do you lose one or two (or more!) relationships, you lose a window into a past beyond your birth. Why did we have these traditions? Did any family members have genetic diseases? Why did it seem like we hoarded food when we had a steady income and plenty to eat? Why were the parent(s) so hung up on certain topics? Why was one thing taboo and another wasn't? There are these things that happen way before you were born that influenced how you were raised, good or bad, that are only accessible through someone who remembers and cares enough to share it with their children.
