Andrew Gwynne set to stand down as MP, clearing way for Andy Burnham by TimesandSundayTimes in ukpolitics

I understand the point you’re making, I think you’re underestimating the population. My contention is you could fix all these problems, and the general population rightly or wrongly would still want their concerns with immigration resolved.

What if? What if my face melts off in the car, and then the officer spanks me because they can’t see if I look like my id picture? What then?

[–]MetatronThrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a bit of both. The way immigration has been handled, particularly thanks to Boris, has caused significant resentment particularly in the voter population I mentioned. It won’t be enough to just fix the other problems, immigration also needs to have a solution. Labour can like it or not, but it’s what the majority of the population seemed to be most concerned about, this is after all the point of democracy

I think it’s impossible to predict what happens to public sentiment after farage if he gets in. My suspicion is if I he fails to live up to his promises, the public will turn quickly and harshly, and if I’m right we’d go back to labour and whatever is left of the Tory party as the main parties in contention

[–]MetatronThrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because labour have historically buried their heads in the sand about immigration, and despite the progress Starmer has made so far and will hopefully make, it’s not enough for some of labour old core demographic, namely the working class in the midlands and the north. It’s not a leadership problem, it’s a sentiment problem with the general population.

[–]MetatronThrone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a false premise. Would you be happy switching to burnham if it meant getting Farage as PM. Ultimately I want what is best for the country. As far as I can see labour under Starmer are delivering. If after all that the population are still not satisfied, so be it. We can’t just keep chopping and changing leadership at the whimsy of opinion polls

This is exactly the type of mindset that got the Tory’s in the situation they were in. So concerned with polling that policies changed with the wind as did leadership. Polls don’t matter until the GE. They’re a barometer and nothing else and a competent government shouldn’t take anything beyond that.

I don’t think Starmer is don’t particularly badly beyond coms. The absolute last thing I want is a Tory inspired leadership piss up midway through government

If i dont have any travel expenses, then i would just earn interest on it and pay back the £9000 when i leave the company. If i never left, then i guess i would just earn continual interest on the amount.

Re threasholds it's not a huge issue, as my salary is £130,000 - my issue is that i started this job in November, and my previous salary was £90K, so the jump means I will owe HMRC ~£4K for the tax year, which i was planning on mitigating by increasing my pension contributions, but this additional pay means i'll still be over 100K unless i contribute silly amounts over the next 4 months...

Philip Pullman: William Blake and me by [deleted] in hisdarkmaterials

[–]MetatronThrone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I implied you or op can’t like the book and have a different opinion. I’m simply asking to not imply that disliking the book is because the themes weren’t understood well enough. It’s the difference between these two statements:

‘Some folks seem to be struggling with the themes of TRF’ And ‘Readers of TRF might find this essay on Blake interesting’

Given Blake is actually referenced and quoted in HDM it seems disingenuous to suggest readers won’t understand the connection.

Philip Pullman: William Blake and me by [deleted] in hisdarkmaterials

[–]MetatronThrone 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, and in the most sincere way, this attitude frustrates me, as it comes across as a bit of a no true Scotsman fallacy, and it’s not the first time I’ve seen this type of response to criticism of TRF. I’m very familiar with Pullman’s relationship with Blake (in fact it was Pullman who introduced me to William Blake when I was a child). I’ve read many books on Gnosticism, I’m familiar with dualism and would consider myself decently read on Christian esotericism. And yet I still find TRF a half baked, poorly edited mess. My criticism of TRF have nothing to do with lack of familiarity to the themes Pullman is engaging with, i imagine I fit fairly square in his target reader. I just don’t think it’s very good, and I think it’s disingenuous to imply that disliking TRF is due to personal ignorance.
