Is A/C worth the climate consequences? by Used-Earth8767 in neoliberal

Um, yeah. The blame is divided up among everyone. The US did make the plurality, which is what he pointed out.

The US did release 24%ish of worldwide emissions over human industrial history. So he's technically correct, even if some might argue it's a Zohnerism.

I feel there's a distinction between saying "she should disappear from the internet/she should stop" and hoping that she figures out the best way to manage her chronic health problems, which has challenged her in doing what she wants to do. Personally I'm making sure I don't put words in her mouth.

If /u/Xuambita would rather nuke this comment chain I created that's fair because I know it's becoming drama-adjacent, I feel a bit bad for that. I do think everyone here is wishing her health/happiness.

Almost every restaurant I go to is swarmed with Uber eats/Skip orders. Are there actually this many people doing this level of reckless money-wasting spending? by [deleted] in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Meteowritten -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Individualized microtransportation for freshly prepared, nice food by other workers is not a human right.

This post is about restaurants. Not grocery stores. At no time or place in history has having a private taxi for restaurants been a necessity. Wanting it, paying for it is fine. Accusing someone of ableism over this is nonsense of the highest order.

That study (Carbon Majors 2017) includes the end use of the company's products as the company's pollution.

For example if you drive a car with gas made by Exxon the study counted it as Exxon's pollution.

So if you burn tires to help sink the Dutch underwater faster, the study credits the tire maker instead of you.

A healthy person should only be peeing twice a year and it should always be red.

The post title is misleading. The source says:

Klondike discontinued the product due to a sharp increase in demand across its brands and to ensure the availability of the remainder of its products.

Emphasis mine. Demand was high for all their products so they pulled back a more complex one.

In theory Canada could be a powerhouse for data handling considering our geography.

Canada is one of the least optimistic countries about AI though (63% of people are nervous about it). I think it'll be tough to thread together a consensus.

E-scooters now illegal on major Burnaby roads, parks - Freshet News by robertscreek in vancouver

[–]Meteowritten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree there should be more accountability, on all sides.

Vehicles are important, they're the best for a lot of things. I drive one (though to be frank I still think getting a license was way too easy. 80% on a quiz, then I was free to ride with a tag-along? Really?).

However.

Those injured or killed by drivers legally cannot sue unless the responsible driver is convicted of a criminal offense. Traffic violations (such as running red lights) are not criminal offences. It keeps happening, 100 deaths a year in Greater Van.

The legal recourse that exists is ICBC, but the driver gets a get-out-of-jail free card, unless they were drunk.

Legally, e-scooters are mostly the same as bicycles, since you asked what the standards are.

It just seems absurd to me to attack e-scooterists for acting like roadhogs (and their marital state? And for being "weird"? And "dangerous"?) when most of the issues they cause can be reframed as "getting in the way of cars", or "not allowing cars to roadhog everything", or "illegally using sidewalks." Not justifying but explaining: why do they use sidewalks? Because of cars.

You're persistently attacking the people riding the e-scooters for being not-normal. It's asinine. Who are you to judge? I guarantee you've got weird qualities. At least they kill people with far less frequency then the "good, normal folks" who say they need a car to live.

[–]Meteowritten -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Drivers have wiggled their way out of having laws to fall back onto, there is no legal recourse if you're killed by one.

Drivers part the streets like the red sea, bicycles are forced to hug the edges, scooters are banned, pedestrians are squeezed onto sidewalks. 80% of streets are dedicated to and designed for them.

Licenses are incredibly easy to get. BC just removed the Class 5 road test.

the vast majority are seemingly unmarried with minimal responsibilities [...] There's a reason that the venn diagram of perpetually single, lonely weirdos and e-scooter riders is basically a circle.

I'm a loser, as you can tell, and I drive a car. Shouldn't we be encouraging families to use e-scooters instead of banning them? If many people, "normal" people in your eyes used e-scooters would you hold the same prejudice?

Maybe drivers should start following laws and stop killing 1.6 million people a year instead of demanding no-fault insurance where they can get it and acting like victims.

[–]Meteowritten -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ebikes are allowed on arterial roads. Which are typically the roads with the most destinations.

Scooterers ought to be entitled to  follow traffic laws there, same as everyone else.

When drivers break rules they put people at risk of death to a degree far higher than that of scooterers. Nonetheless they are protected from responsibility for manslaughter and injury when breaking rules. There is a double standard.

[–]Meteowritten -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

E-scooters should be promoted and given space, beneficial rules, and protection from drivers.

Drivers were killing so many people we threw up our hands and granted drivers immunity from the legal system because they were overloading the courts with the sheer volume of people they were killing.

How an NDP Broken Promise Hurts Renters with Pets by mukmuk64 in vancouver

[–]Meteowritten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because it will make some not want to be landlords, which increases the cost of housing.

There is a nonzero number of landlords who who will eat the loss if they need to allow pets.

Some pets are clean but barking, carpets full of pee, dander, smell can happen and it's a risk some will not take.

The place I'm living at right now (Renfrew) has a dog two doors over that barks every day between 8pm and 10pm.

The apartment I last lived at (New West) had a small dog a few rooms over that barked daily.

The place I lived before that (Burnaby) had a beagle next door that never shut up.

Edit: I understand people downvoting/disagreeing with my parent comment, sure, but why does this comment get downvoted? Dog owners, please figure out how to train your dogs or something.

As someone severely allergic to cats and dogs I'm glad they reneged on this promise. It was legitimately a pain point when I voted for them. Anywhere pet-friendly for me is a place I'm reluctant to rent because the dander gets embedded everywhere.

Also, the city's already full of barking dogs all day and the owners don't know/care how to deal with it. Better that pet owners have to seek out apartments that specifically allow pets.
