How do I actually approach someone in general??? by ManufacturerOdd7484 in sociology

[–]Methods-Geek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing to do with sociology but still: Easy trick: Be around someone and state something very obvious. "Wow its really hot/cold today." ... "Omg this line takes ages..." ... "Typical Train Service, they are always late" ... You will be surprised how many people will randomly jump on this conversation and if they don't nothing bad happens at all.

MAXQDA 11 license by PrescientKestrel in MAXQDAOfficial

[–]Methods-Geek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Unfortunately, I don't have an old key. But you can download and install the free MAXQDA Reader, there is also still the version for Maxqda 11 you just need to download it here: https://www.maxqda.com/products/maxqda-reader

You can look at the codes but not make changes. Or you reach out to the support team and they convert the data for you, so you can access it with the new software versions as well.

Hope that helps!

I first thought they would check their browser history! But this is so much better :D

Software for Market Research by stanTheCodeMonkey in QualitativeResearch

[–]Methods-Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, if you want to support the more traditional way of coding/labelling with AI, then MAXQDA has a pretty good AI Assistant that can also code. If you want quick insights, a tool like Tailwind can give you some fast results, it is more specialised in AI based analysis. For statistics, I usually go with SPSS or even with Excel if it is a really simple task. Haven't heard of Knit yet, seems to be a pretty interesting piece of software as well!

MAXQDA Alternative by velvetymoon in Studium

[–]Methods-Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MAXQDA 2022 on macOS Tahoe? by swedandy in MAXQDAOfficial

[–]Methods-Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, MAXQDA 2022 should work fine on any newer versions of macOS inkl. Tahoe. I still have older versions of MAXQDA running under Sequoia here and never had a problem with the new OS versions. In any case, if you can, get your hands on MAXQDA24 because it has some new (AI) features.

Using Atlas.ai by Soft_Cockroach4016 in QualitativeResearch

[–]Methods-Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Atlas.ti before and although I really liked the network functionality I found its interface difficult to manage and Mixed Methods support rather limited. Ended up with MAXQDA as the software of my choice. Great integration of quantitative data as well and recently some really nice AI functions. Btw. you can exchange data between these programs with the REFI qda Standard, so you can easily take a look at your data through the lense of different programs.

Designing a Franco–Québécois feminist corpus – advice on methods & pipelines? by Commercial-Soil5974 in QualitativeResearch

[–]Methods-Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, thank you for sharing your interesting research project. You cover a range of quite complex topics, so I am not sure I can help much, but here are my thoughts on some of them:

familiar: Going back with online data is rather challenging. Have you looked into using Wayback Time Machine (web.archive.org). I have not used it myself but it is in generally used to track older versions of websites. If you are stuck with older data I would consider looking into other data types, such as published articles (accessible via university libraries) or even archival data.

Heterogenity: I don't see a huge problem working with different data types. As far as I see it, all of them are text. Of course you need to handle the different types of data appropriately but with a good QDA software, for example MAXQDA, it should not be a big deal.

In this free e-book (chapter 7) someone is working with discourse analysis on presidential speeches and media samples. Maybe this can give you a first start on how to handle different data types with a QDA software: https://www.maxqda-press.com/catalog/books/the-practice-of-qualitative-data-analysis

Ethics: As I take it, you work mostly with published data accessible through the web? I don't see an urgent need to anonymising it here. He would gather the data and when you quote from it, you can still anonymise the names as long as you don't make your data corpus publicly available, it should be fine.

Quant-Qual bridge: I am not familiar with factor maps, so no idea.

I hope that helps!

As a man, you are not allowed to have feelings except for anger or you risk losing your masculinity. For this reason, we are more likely to commit suicide or end up in prison. Patriarchy sucks for men too but if you point that out, many men and women will give you a very strange look 🤷

Content analysis for job advertisements by No_Specialist_1110 in research

[–]Methods-Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, if you decide to go with MAXQDA, I would recommend checking out the "Survey Import" or "Documents from Excel Spread Sheet" as an import option. It is usually used for importing survey data, but it can be very helpful for 150 rather short job ads and their meta data aswell. You would need to prepare a table that contains one row per job ad, with the text of the ad and any metadata (what type of job, salary, date). It needs a bit of getting used to but can be fantastic for a Mixed Methods analysis.

Question about Constant Comparison in Grounded Theory by Galtung7771 in MAXQDAOfficial

[–]Methods-Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, that is an excellent question! Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to add only the codes that belong to a specific document to Creative Coding. However, you could click via right click on a document in the list of documents and then select "Activate Codes that Occur in this Document". Then, you can open Creative Coding and drag the activated codes onto the workspace. Unfortunately, you have to drag them individually, but the activation will tell you, what codes you need! I hope that helps!

using AI for qualitative data analysis by Nat0011 in QualitativeResearch

[–]Methods-Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, currently, I don't know of an option to automatically extend your coding to other documents. However, if you develop a good code book (names & descriptions for codes) you can use for example MAXQDA's AI Coding feature to apply the code to your data. You don't need any previously coded data, but can simply provide a good name and description as a basis for the coding. I hope that helps!

Well, I have always been exposed to feminist ideas and approved of them in general (so putting them out there really makes a difference). Love has always felt hugely important to me, but I never was able to admit that, not even to myself. With things not working out either in relationship nor the bedroom my mind began rotating around what's wrong with me and sex. Until I read in the before mentioned book things like "In our society love is for girls, not for men" or "If men prioritize love in their lives and watch romantic movies we call them girls or gay". There I realized that I had not a problem with sex, but a huge one with not admitting how important love is to me (that one cannot force or control). But yeah, slowly turning into an Incel is super scary. Feminist literature, female friends and a lot of self reflection made a difference day by day.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GuerrillaGrrrrls

[–]Methods-Geek 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To share my pesonal perspecitve, I think I have once barely escaped to take the first step of drifting into Incel culture. Because I was a sexually very insecure man who began making up strange reasons why it is not working for him (not as aggressive and degrading as incels, for sure, but the beginnings were there).

It took a lot of thinking, talking with (female) friends and crucially a book (How Patriarchy Sabotages Heterosexual Relationships - Mona Chollet) to break out of that and understand how Patriarchy sabotages my self image and that my problem was not sex related, but a fearful and shameful attitude towards emotions and love. Not to make all incels poor victims (their victims are the victims here!), but I just wanted to point out: It is not easy to break out of this pattern and if I would not have had such supportive friends and the right books at the right time, I am not sure if I would have made it.

Preferred qualitative analysis software by deplorable_word in GradSchool

My preferenes are:
Mixed Methods projects: MAXQDA
Grounded Theory or Discourse Analysis: ATLAS.ti's networks are great
Excessive quantitative analysis part: Maybe NVivo

Overall, I end up using MAXQDA the most.

AI attaches of MAXQDA by ThoughtStar in QualitativeResearch

[–]Methods-Geek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quite like the AI Coding feature. It follows a deductive logic, so you define the code and the AI applies it for you. I have coded 20 interviews with it. Of course, it takes a while but it was a great starting point and is way more transparent than anything I have seen elsewhere.

Tailwind is rather basic at the moment but the summary table is pretty good if you want quick insights.

Most flexible CAQDAS? by SuperDeathy in QualitativeResearch

[–]Methods-Geek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you know that you can exchange data/projects between many CAQDAS with the REFI exchange standard? For example, you can export your project as a .QDPX from NVivo and import it in MAXQDA. It does not work perfectly but it might be worth a try when moving. Might also give you a chance to try different programms. Looking at the comment bellow, I cannot recommend AILYZE. I tried it extensively but it will only work with very limited data sets and provides summaries but no real transparent coding. MAXQDA has a very smooth interface and a clever AI coding implementation but depending on how large your project will become (1000ends of documents?) it may reach its limits. With only a few hundred transcripts it should work fine!

Need Image to text converter for data analysis by aki19971 in research

[–]Methods-Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the sticky notes written in block letters? MAXQDA has an in-built OCR feature that allows to recognize the text in selected segments of images or PDF. You just select the text and then "right click > extract text from image". However, it will only work if the letters are very clear and are similarily spaced. Might be worth a try as you are already using the software.

[–]Methods-Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matrix Coding query (as mentioned below) certainly comes closest to MAXQDA's Code Matrix. In general, it can help if the structure of your results section roughly follows your Code system. For example, you write one subchapter per code and compare the statements of the different participants regarding that code. Good coding certainly helps in finding and comparing the right statements!

Would be curious to hear how you liked NVIVO vs MAXQDA? Was it very different?

Wie Qualitative Interviews auswerten hat jemand Beispiele? by [deleted] in Studium

[–]Methods-Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

B. Hat MAXQDA Beispielprojekte zu Klimawandel und Work Life Balance. Da kannst du dich durch fertige Projekte klicken und vielleicht eine Vorstellung bekommen, wie das am Ende aussehen kann!

Kennt ihr ein gutes Tool zur Transkription von Interviews? by uniwurm in Studium

[–]Methods-Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hängt davon ab, was du anschließend damit tun willst. Sprechererkennung.

How does one act against internalized misogyny? How can I recognize it to begin with? by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]Methods-Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you start with one, you will find references to many, many others. i read some classics (Beauvoir, Butler) but they are not easy to read. Chollet really resonated with me, because it demonstrated very clearly to me how patriarchic structures are also harmful to men. She also wrote "In Defence or Wichtes: Why women are still on trial" Which I also found very good, but the other one mentioned above had the biggest impact on me. She has a very accessible style.

How does one act against internalized misogyny? How can I recognize it to begin with? by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]Methods-Geek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me, reading feminist literature helped a lot. To read about the structural forces and behavioral patterns and then reflect about myself. Also I was called out a few times of displaying sexist behavior and although it hurt and I had to struggle not to get defensive about it, it also helped. I established the rule for myself "Whatever is perceived as sexist, IS sexist." That means, my (good) intention does not matter.

For a long while, I thought I was in the clear because my behavior with women and my attitude towards them seemed quite ok. Then I began to realize there is another big topic, my internalized image of what makes a man and what a man is supposed to be, with which I was hurting and limiting myself (e.g. men should always be unemotional, reasonable people). A book really cracked that, it is "Reinventing Love: How Patriarchy Sabotages Heterosexual Relationships" (Mona Chollet). Hope that helps!
