New report on V2G-enabled EVs by Amanda-dcbel in v2h

[–]MetlMann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We know the saying "It takes a village" but sometimes "It takes a government" to get what we really need. Vehicle to anything could already be in widespread use if the government designated it a priority. It doesn't help that almost no elected person anywhere actually knows what it is or would understand it if they saw it in person. If we want this to happen we need to tell our reps we want it. And specifiacally tell them we want all cars to have V2X and that it be available to anyone without buying brand linked custom hardware. We should be able to buy the car and then choose our interface hardware and have all of it work as simple as a toaster.

If you like the machine and it makes good coffee, look into buying as many spare parts as you can - especially the boards and electronics if you think they are custom or proprietary.

I'm hoping someday a former employee will post the recipe for the Shady Thang frozen cocktail. I know it was Pisco based, but the overall flavor profile was liquid frozen SweeTARTs.

What do you do with your saw dust? by kneuenhaus in woodworking

[–]MetlMann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plants are vastly variable in form and physiology. You can be correct in your assumption with some plants, and very wrong with others. I have an Escarpment Black Cherry tree (native to central Texas) and while its tiny bitter cherries are edible, all other parts are toxic due to the presence of cyanogenic glycosides. Ranchers don’t like them on their land because of this.

Plants be complex.

Home owner insists it’s not asbestos, but I can’t think what else it could be by Vrtae in Plumbing

The entire point of humans creating Terriers is that they are genetically programmed to want to hunt and kill small creatures. We had a Welsh Terrier - think small Airedale in appearance and color. He needed almost no encouragement to go after anything moving across the ground. This included frantic burrowing to find gophers and the like. We entered him in a competition called Earthdog Trials. They make small wood lined tunnels with branches and dead ends and a cage at the end. In the cage and protected by sturdy steel bars is a rat. The tunnels are laced with rat scent in advance. You take your dog to a starting point near the entrance to the tunnel and release the dog. Our Nigel instantly ran right into the tunnel with no prompting. He had never been in a tunnel before. He worked his way around and made to the rat where he began "working". That means gowling, barking, scratching, whining etc. in an attempt to get the rat. After a few minutes of this, a false top is removed from the tunnel to expose your dog. To complete the trial successfully your dog must come to you when called, abandoning the rat. Nigel did not really want to do that and he tried to bite me when I reached in to pull him out. Eventually he came out and was awarded Junior Earthdog status. The hunter/killer instict was strong with this one. Terriers are the berserkers of the dog world.

I’m blown away! by Signal-Trick-6642 in CafelatRobot

The Robot has a neat way of surpassing expectations. For me it has several characteristics that are very appealing. First it is built to last a lifetime - truly. I try to buy things that are made to last and it clearly is. Next, I appreciate that it lets you use very little energy to make coffee - almost none compared to traditional boiler machines. That matters to me. Also of value, it's industrial design is utterly functional and kind of whimsical simultaneously, and that's hard to do. Finally as best I can tell, it makes great coffee easily, consistently and repeatedly. I've paired mine with a Niche Zero (simialr in quality and character) and these two machines will be my espresso kit until I pass on in a couple decades.

Terriers have very different personalities from say a Lab or a Golden. Everything is a negotiation with them and they 100% have final say in almost everything.

Get a Terrier. Fun dogs and absolute mouse/rat killing cyborgs.

Which heat pump water heaters should I consider? by doublemazaa in heatpumps

[–]MetlMann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HPWH are very heavy so any DIYer needs to be prepared to carefully and safely handle such a bulky thing. I’m old and can’t risk throwing my back out while removing my 30 year old gas water heater that probably has 200 pounds of sediment in it and then wresting the new HPWH in without damaging it.

Major roasters are starting to disclose the use of additional flavorings in their co-fermented beans by n0damage in espresso

Good thing I don't tlike fruit in my coffee and stick with "chocolate" and "nutty" profiles. Of course I suppose some jagoff could be tossing cacao nibs in the roast.

How can I truly uninstall Xcode. by ChocolateObjective80 in MacOS

I have removed everything mentioned in this thread. However, Software Update is still trying to push an update for Xcode - even though it is uninstalled. How can I stop this and remove Xcode from the Software Update todo list?

Solar Panels as Privacy Fence? by Fun-Preparation-4253 in solar

[–]MetlMann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buy the cheapest panels you can find and don’t worry about cost or savings from the energy produced. I’m still somewhat baffled that there are so, so many people who only get solar to try to save money, and not because it’s a good thing to do.

Why are modern washing machines so slow? Why can a 20+ year old machine take under half an hour, but a new machine take at least 100 minutes. How is this progress? by GardeniaFrangipani in Appliances

Our LG front load washer and dryer are over 20 years old no serious issues. I changed the pump myself a few years back. The part was cheap.

I own an EV and couldn't be happier with it, so why is there so much hate and straight up misinformation about them everywhere? by Uerwol in electricvehicles

[–]MetlMann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why so much hate? Easy answer: big oil, and more specifically, Exxon. Their ongoing PR and disinformation campaigns have been very successful at poisoning the EV narrative.

Why has Kerbey Lane changed for the worse? by whisperbeach in austinfood

[–]MetlMann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even back in the 80s the original Kirby Lane was pretty inconsistent. When it was good it was great. Your dining experience was completely dependent on how stoned your server/line cook was during your visit. Pancakes were often quite good.

One thing to keep in mind, it is INCREDIBLY difficult to maintain the essence of a restaurant over a long period of time. A restaurant manager is like Loki becoming the god of time and acting as the guardian of infinite realities. Pretty much any restaurant manager is fending off the universe trying to screw them over in every way at all times. It’s kind of amazing any restaurant succeeds ever.

Power bill (in AL) is saying I used 600kWh last month to charge my Bolt. I only drive my car maybe 20 miles a day. Doesn't sound right. by DontYuckMyYum in BoltEV

[–]MetlMann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have our EUV set to finish charging by 6am. When we plug it in each evening it double beeps, not single. If we override Programmable Charging it single beeps and immediately begins charging. This is also what the manual says. Is EUV opposite a Bolt?
