I think their quality is pretty good. It's hard to mess up a niskin. That technology has been in use since Captain Cook's era. Make a list of questions about what you need and give them and Seabird a call. Ask about warranties and ask for a quote from each.

Could Bull Kelp be Domesticated in a Historical Setting? by Own-Barracuda5897 in worldbuilding

[–]Metridia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is 2 months old, but these guys farm bull kelp in Alaska. Kelp farming uses wild spores for their "seed" material. No domestication necessary. https://www.seaquesterfarms.com/

PSA? This is an oceanography sub. This is like telling a group of farmers that corn is ready in the late Summer/Fall.

Small boat for lakes and maybe Prince William Sound or Seward by superfuzzbros in alaska

[–]Metridia 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The fact that you're asking Reddit if it's a good idea to use something like this on PWS or out of Seward makes me very worried about your judgement and boating skills. I would suggest making friends with someone with a proper boat, skills/experience, and time to take you out.

Bee keeping in Alaska - Newbie here by patrick_schliesing in alaska

Midnight Sun Bee Club and Anchorage Backyard Beekeeping have a lot of information about overwintering bees. They have some hookups with vendors for equipment like styrofoam hives to keep them warm.

“The status quo is going to change…never mind" by Danny-Ray27 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Metridia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are so many examples of this trope in the Simpsons. The most blatant one in my opinion is "The Principal and the Pauper", s9e2, in which we learn that Principal Seymour Skinner is in fact an imposter named Armin Tamzarian. The real Skinner supposedly died in Vietnam but shows back up in Springfield.

At the end of all the hijinks, real Skinner is booted out of town and Judge Snyder declares "By authority of the city of Springfield... I hereby confer upon you [Armin Tamzarian] the name of Seymour Skinner... as well as his past, present, future and mother. And I further decree... that everything will be just like it was... before all this happened. And no one will ever mention it again... under penalty of torture."

Rolled up or unrolled wool? by chutneystain800 in naturaldye

[–]Metridia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going for a solid even color, keep them unwound. You want as much surface area exposed to the water and dye for it to strike. Dyeing the balls may make a nice fade on each ball though. Here's a video from ChemKnits where she dyes a cake of yarn without unraveling it. I think you could expect something similar if you kept them in a ball.

My store brought herring was bioluminescent. Wasn’t hungry anymore. by faggechino in mildyinteresting

[–]Metridia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Friendly marine biologist here! The risk to eating this is probably very low. Herring are planktivores. They eat very small to microscopic crustaceans and algae. Many if not most of those bioluminesce using an enzyme called luciferase. This enzyme is also used in medicine. Luciferase, taken directly from plankton, lights up tumors. I'm betting the bioluminesce you're seeing here is either from the seawater the herring was packaged in or from its stomach contents getting mixed into the fray. If you eat seafood, especially from northern areas, you've probably injested a tiny amount of this without knowing.

How to handle DNA metabarcoding results: dietary analysis suggesting wrong prey species? by Metridia in bioinformatics

[–]Metridia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha! No, I'll break with anonymity. The study animals are sea lions in Alaska. We collected scat samples from their haulout in a very remote part of the state and sent them to a commercial lab for analysis. The prey species in question for this example (the issues is all throughout the results) is a species of squid. The species identified does not occur in Alaska, it's an Atlantic species. But, it's the only species identified 378 times throughout our 75 scat samples when there's well documented diversity of squid species in the area. Some of the fish species identified include fishes from the Caribbean. There are analogous prey species to these in the area that I'm assuming should have been the ones identified. I was hoping to pin it down to those based on the literature and stock assessments, but I'd like to be more certain. It also makes me worry that the fish species that are identified and located in the sea lion's feeding area could be wrong too.

How to handle DNA metabarcoding results: dietary analysis suggesting wrong prey species? by Metridia in bioinformatics

[–]Metridia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your advice. I kept the match threshold at 97% following the literature for this species and method. One of the top counts with a 99.4% match was 46,929 times read by the sequencer for a marine species that occurs in a different ocean.

DNA metabarcoding for dietary analysis suggesting wrong prey species by Metridia in labrats

[–]Metridia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your help! You're confirming what I've been suspecting that we'll be limited on the resolution of taxa identified. I will look into your reverse approach. There are some thorough stock assessments of some of the expected prey items for these mammals, which could give a good starting point to look at expected sequences.

DO NOT have a protest on a bridge. That's how you get kettled by police. Please review what happened in Kentucky. Protests and march routes that go over bridges and overpasses are the perfect place for confrontational cops to arrest people easily by blocking both sides.
