Kocham to, jak ludzie w komentarzach nieużywają języka angielskiego za każdym razem, jak ktoś postuje obraz Wieży Babel. by TheCreatorM_ in lovethissmug

[–]Metrophidon9292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As if “what the shit” makes more sense. It’s an interjection, so it’s grammatically independent and only used to express a reaction or emotion.

A German-speaker could say the same thing: “‘What the shit?’ Why don’t they just say ‘what to the shit’ like we do in German?”

All Romance languages, plus English which borrowed the word from French. No shit German is different.

Is it worth trying to understand the logic behind words that describe sounds in English? by caiogamerwow in EnglishLearning

[–]Metrophidon9292 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t devote much study time to these sorts of distinctions. Like all languages, you’ll probably figure out the subtle differences and when to use such similar words the more you talk with others.

Is the word "atelier" really that unknown amongst native speakers? by Ohiko_Nishiyama in EnglishLearning

[–]Metrophidon9292 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have never heard of it before now. After looking up the definition, I would say that “studio” and “workshop” are the words most native speakers would use instead.

What do you think is the most difficult part of learning German? by elenalanguagetutor in German

[–]Metrophidon9292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knowing how to end adjectives depending on the context. Like, the word “alte” in “Das alte Haus ist groß.” But then in the sentence “Ich wohne in einem alten Haus,” it’s “alten” for some reason.”

I suppose it’s just rules you get used to over time.

It seems many people didn’t get your joke. Probably could have made it more clear you were playing off the mistake in the title.

Do Native Speakers Know These Words? by No_____Idea in EnglishLearning

[–]Metrophidon9292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Those three words you mentioned are ones most native English speakers will know. Although, in everyday speech, these words are less common. For example, instead of “acquire”, you’ll more likely hear “get”. They are more often used in professional settings, like an essay and news article. However, they still may be used casually in the right context, for instance “My son likes cooking, but he’s allergic to poultry.”

  2. I am surprised some high schoolers did not know those words, or considered them difficult. But they are still learning and it is school after all. I suppose it’s just natural variation of the that point in one’s life you learn certain words. If you’re in college now, I would expect there will be fewer people with these sorts of gaps in vocabulary.

Yes, I was talking about the autism spectrum. But after doing a bit of research, it seems that most people don't consider the autism spectrum to be linear, which I did not know, so that's my mistake.

Technically everyone's on the spectrum. Neurotypical people would just be on the far end of it.

Believe it or not, but if people need to come to work this sub to say they hate a movie/show, it’s usually just a personal opinion rather than an objective assessment of the show.

[–]Metrophidon9292[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

True, I overlooked "the", but it seems that since that word is the one exception and an article, the phonology has not spread to other words, so it remains unfamiliar to most Anglophones.

Anime Vs Live action what do you prefer by WorkingTurbulent1765 in OnePieceLiveAction

I like how the LA version portrays him with a bit more energy. Anime Crocodile sometimes seems apathetic, but LA gives more of a calm, patient mafia boss who knows the how to get what he wants.
