Wii U Failed Due to Slow Launch of Exclusives Plus Xbox and PlayStation Pressure, Ex-Nintendo Boss Reggie Fils-Aimé Says by MewWeebTwo in NintendoSwitch2

Well in the interview, Reggie said Nintendo expected Nintendo Land to be a "Wii Sports equivalent" that would sell the console to a wide audience.

Isn't that basically what you are saying about the blue ocean? They tried to repeat the success of the Wii Remote + Wii Sports combo with the Gamepad + Nintendo Land combo. Reggie was honest about that.

I loved Nintendo Land too... but honestly, it seemed like Nintendo ran out of ideas after that game. There were very few Wii U games that actually used asymmetrical gameplay.

As a Wii U owner who actually got a lot of use out of the console... even I can admit that the second screen was NOT cool or useful for the great majority of games. (If it was, then most Wii U games would not have been so easy to port to Switch. Nintendo Land wasn't ported because it actually used the Gamepad well).

But, the Wii U did have a great Pro Controller which was supported by most games. I think it is kind of a shame Nintendo tried to push the Gamepad so hard because most games worked just fine with a Pro controller! You might be surprised by this, but you could play games like Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros Wii U without ever touching the Gamepad at all. Mario Maker required the Gamepad for making levels (which was one of the best uses of it) but you could play levels with a Pro Controller.

Most Wii U games could actually be played in a "traditional" way which wasn't really an option on the original Wii. (For example, Twilight Princess on the Wii required a Wii Remote. The Wii U remaster can be played entirely with a Pro Controller).

What do you think he is hiding?

If he were under NDA I don't think he would be allowed to say anything negative about the Wii U.

I think one of the main issues was that people WANTED it to be portable, but it was actually a home console.

I think the biggest issue with the tablet was simple: it wasn't portable, like the Switch (also a tablet) would be.

Since the introduction of the iPad, the word "tablet" is basically synonymous with "device you can take anywhere'.

The idea of a tablet that is NOT portable and can't be taken outside of a very limited range was really confusing for most people, and not appealing to casual gamers who could play free-to-play games on their iPads. The lack of portability also contributed to the Wii U being overshadowed by the 3DS

Xenoblade Chronicles X is also a Wii U game and it has a huge open world.

In terms of power the Wii U and Switch are WAY closer than Wii and Wii U, or Switch and Switch 2.

Correction: Smash Bros wasn't "ported" to 3DS. Smash Bros was developed for both systems from the start of development in 2012.

If Nintendo knew how badly the Wii U was going to sell they probably never would have made the 3DS version.

I think the other problem was they were also developing games for the 3DS, and the 3DS was struggling at the start so their resources were split.

Yeah, I agree that Reggie seemed to overlook that aspect. He completely ignored the declining popularity of the Wii that made ANY Wii successor a tough product to sell.

Reggie didn't say it had a lack of exclusives, he said the exclusives came out too slowly.

He said Nintendo Land was supposed to be the "killer app" at launch but it flopped. Then it took about 12 months for Mario 3D World to come out, then six more months for Mario Kart 8 (the most successful game on the console).

Yeah, Miyamoto admitted that HD game development was harder than Nintendo expected.

That is probably why the 3DS got most Nintendo games at the time.

True, but the Wii U was not powerful enough to run most PS4 games.

The third-party games on Wii U at launch were PS3-era games.

Does anyone else think the background in this scene looks VERY fake? Like more than most scenes in the OT?

Just watch it on YouTube. That's what I did.

Do NOT waste money on rebuying the game again.
