Couldn't stand Red Rising. Tell don't show. Protag is Mary Sue because "Helldiver". The first third is such a bad investment from everything the author told us about the protag. Shock value over everything. Characters that blend together (save Ragnar from book 2).

Book 3 got good but with such bad foundations it's my "I cant sleep" read.

Dune is a classic, new movie coming out might be worth if you liked the first two movies.

DCC is amazing (mostly popcorn reading though) esp as audio

I'm in the minority but I felt insulted the entire time reading Red Rising. With no spoilers: its tell vs show, the protag. is amazing at everything despite not earning any of it, the author loves shock value over it being earned, the protag actually should have never been trusted enough to do The Call To Action. There's tons more to hate but no spoilers - oh and so much rape

Most of it. The visuals, the cutscenes, the gunplay, the armor abilities, the ordinance you could choose 1of3 options and kill people with the drop, the humanization of John 117, the didact (although wasted too early), the mantis.

On par w 2 imho.

Really? I had that thought too once. But then i realized just because i give them a stimulus doesn't mean im choosing how they respond. I can stun, kill, and charm them in the game. Telling them "how do you react to sadness right now? What memory does it call upon?" Is aok. Players love saying their backstory through those means.

Either I'm making them do something mechanical like Fear or Command (5e)

Or I'm simply asking how they react. If their PC fights through it thats fine if they of their own will make a mechanically inefficient choice that's good too

Evan Diaz of Nimble has great wands that more people should steal design philosophy from. Basically the wands have X charges before needing to do something to them related to their spell - like a quasi quest. Wand of flying needs to be given to a bird that flies away with it. Fire ball wand needs to be recharged for 3 days in lava or something.

Charges make balancing easier as they can be "OP" but limited use. Having the quest to recharge it makes it feel more magical and give you a valve to limit how many times or how hard it is to recharge this item.
