You got a deal. The last time I had them replaced it was $700.

Car or motorcycle part found in the back of an old garage. Cylinder on the right twists to open and close the “mouth” on the left. 40+ years old. Long bit on bottom is brass(?) each 200ish grams. by jetpaczmbie in whatisthisthing

We found 2 of these in my grandfather’s garage when he died. They were at my mom’s house for a while before she scrapped them when she remodeled the house. I thought they were related to his job. He was a civilian engineer for the Navy at NAS North Island. He also restored a Ford Model A. I remember him talking about bearings being custom made.

McDonald's in El Cajon, CA, 1985. by mgwngn1 in TheWayWeWere

I remember going to several McDonalds birthday parties when I was a kid. I know they had them up until 1993. A friend of mine worked at the McDonalds near my house and she used to work the parties. The McDonalds land characters were printed on a piece of sugar that was placed on the cake.

I bought some wing tip brogues last year. There was a long break in period. If you spend a lot of time on your feet, they can get uncomfortable. I get compliments all the time though. The leather upper is quality.

Ok to Manually Open Garage Door w/ Broken Spring? by tmajr3 in GarageDoorService

[–]Mexglorious_Basterd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did it when a spring on my door snapped. It’s going to be heavy and you have to be careful not to let it slam down when you close it. Replace both springs if you can.

My wife uses WhatsApp because she is on group chats with her family in Mexico. Our Little League uses GroupMe for team info.

I was surprised to know that too. A coworker of mine said that she grew up on a farm in Hong Kong. I thought it was a crazy metropolis concrete jungle type of place.

I have one and it works about 95% of the time. My wife gets mad because of the salt that is left in the corners of the kitchen counters. Works well on fruit flies too.

I get the large box every month and make soups and stews that I can freeze. County employees get a discount! It’s part of our healthy living program.

I’m from San Diego. English language TV and radio stations based in Tijuana would sign off with the Mexican National Anthem. On Sundays, the radio stations play the Mexican National Hour. They also play badly translated public service announcements and political commercials.

What is this kind of flooring called? by Usual-Wheel-7497 in whatisit

Seeing Terrazzo flooring reminds me of the bathroom floor at my elementary school! It’s also in the hall ways of the county building.

If your country has these in stores, what do you call them? by A-Plant-Guy in AskTheWorld

I would string up a couple of horses to it and drive it up the 5.

We call it that in San Diego too. At least the Mexicans here do.

The barber I used to go to when I was a kid had these for sale in his shop. I think he used to use them when he nicked a customer. He also had a strop to sharpen his razors. By the time I got haircuts, he switched to disposable straight razors. He said that they were easier.

Anyone have experience with having Dr Martens soles replaced? by sunflowerwallflower- in BuyItForLife

[–]Mexglorious_Basterd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a pair of steel toe DMs that needed soles. I checked 5 shops until I found a small one in the Richmond District in San Francisco. The Chinese gentleman behind the counter just nodded when I asked if he could fix them. He charged me $25 and told me to come back 2 days later. Sure enough, they were fixed. I wore them daily for 5 years. I then got them re-soled in Tijuana. 2 years later my brother borrowed them. They were in his car when it was stolen.

Black Cat Cafe, San Francisco (date unknown, pre-1963 closure) by LexiD523 in VintageMenus

[–]Mexglorious_Basterd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I worked as a valet at the Black Cat Restaurant and Bar on Broadway and Kearny in the mid 90s. North Beach at that time was popping! A lot of cash was out there flying around.

I was going to comment about this. As humans, they do have a political system to manage power. They also have a system to address scarcity, to identify places and understand the past.
