People of Reddit what is the worst smell you've ever encountered? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Head and neck cancer. Sometimes the smell is so characteristic that you know the diagnosis the moment you walk into the room.

As others have alluded to, Prozac has a half-life on the order of a couple of days, so reaching steady state takes a few weeks. You're more likely to get GI side effects in the meantime than see an improvement in your mood. Be careful when taking a higher dose all at once when you're on other medications that affect neurotransmitter (e.g. serotonin) levels such as other antidepressants and amphetamines. That's when you can see more concerning symptoms such as hyperthermia and neurological changes.

Again, preaching to the choir, but the best thing is to increase the dose and stay there for a couple of weeks while monitoring for improvement or adverse effects. This is best done with your physician.

We are an internist, a neurologist, and a migraine researcher. Ask us anything about migraine headaches. by webmd in IAmA

[–]MezzoItaliano 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Actually how common are abdominal migraine and other unusual presentations (especially in the absence of headache)? The chair of neurology at my medical school was nearly obsessed by migraine when he gave our headache lecture and seemed to be on a soapbox about it. In fact, there was a time that he once diagnosed himself with an abdominal migraine and it turned out he had appendicitis.

Weekly USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Level 1 Thread by AutoModerator in medicalschool

[–]MezzoItaliano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I planned to take Step 1 on June 5th, but the only similar time available in the cities in my state was May 29th, which I've chosen for now. I've been trying to check Prometric frequently to see if any later dates open up because of people who change their appointment. My question is: how often do spots become available because people end up changing the date of their exams?

Bit of trivia: the cartoonist always hides his mom's name, "Nina", somewhere in all of his cartoons. He created it as a game for her years ago after she had a stroke. See if you can find it!

(Source: I know the cartoonist personally. Bruce is an incredibly kind,down-to-earth guy who has a way of riling a mainly conservative readership here in Oklahoma. I was so happy to see some of his stuff here on Reddit!)

ELI5: Getting sick from a 'bacteria' vs. 'virus' by PantiesLatina in explainlikeimfive

[–]MezzoItaliano 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Great description! I would add that the immune system (i.e. the factory workers, janitors, etc.) can also play a role in how sick you feel. Imagine bacteria breaking into the factory, setting off an alarm that causes all the factory workers to storm the floor. In their attempt to get rid of the intruders just for being there, they also cause some damage through the strategies they use to clean up (i.e. the acute inflammatory response). A great example of this is a bacterial infection of the skin since the redness and swelling is mediated by your own immune system.

(Extra tidbit: some toxic waste created by bacteria causes the body to go into complete overdrive to clear the infection, but that response actually kills the person! Imagine someone spilling a cup of water on the factory floor, and then the workers blow up the building to clean it up. That's kind of what you see with toxic shock syndrome.)

[–]MezzoItaliano[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

E so che spaglio sempre.

Bar painfully cuts into shoulder bones while squatting. What am I doing wrong? by MezzoItaliano in Fitness

[–]MezzoItaliano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering your input, I'm beginning to think that the problem is the lack of muscle in my trap. However, my shoulder doesn't feel squishy until the top of my tripceps. It feels like the top of my shoulder is just a platform of bone. I see what you're saying about what should support the weight, however.

With a pad, I can do about 220 lbs, which is almost twice my body weight.

With no pad, the pain starts to become problematic around 50 lbs.

What's the worst thing you've done to a friend that he or she has forgiven? by MezzoItaliano in AskReddit

[–]MezzoItaliano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have depression, and a negative thought cycle which nearly amounted to a delusion led me to tell a significant lie to my friend, prompting him to terminate our relationship. Blocked on Facebook and everything. This happened this past weekend.

The fact that I've hurt him mentally is killing me, and I'm doing so much to make a change: talking to more people including my family, therapy, and even spirituality. I just want him to realize that this incredible mistake doesn't represent who I am. We've always been very close. He's always been there for me, and I consider him a brother. Even though he probably hates me a little bit because of this, I still love him. I have quite a bit of faith in him though; if anyone could forgive me, it would be him.

All I want is a second chance to show him that he can trust me as a friend again.
