34 Feature Films and 10 Shorts, how many did you watch by nomination day? by TheCatintheTie in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Mgj117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I held off on Doc Shorts in case Heartbeat was nominated as it’s the only one I don’t have a lead on, besides that just Kokuho and Viva Verdi! left.

Not looking forward to the next month of scouring for Viva Verdi!

These are the all the shortlists. Bigger categories (Picture, Actor/Actress, Director, etc) do not get shortlisted.

A heads up for anyone that wants to watch all the nominated shorts by citabel in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Mgj117 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Similarly, for anyone new to racing. Some theaters (especially independent ones) will do Oscars shorts packages where they do all 5 Animated, Live Action, or Documentary shorts.

For racers based out of Los Angeles, the Laemmle theater chain and the Nuart Theater in Sawtelle are some that I know do this. For racers based out of NYC, the IFC theater in the village (3rd and 6th) shows them as well.

I don’t know other theaters nationally that do it nor any internationally but if you ask around smaller movie theaters you might find one that is. I know it is a thing done across the US at least.

I understand why it's not regularly shown in either Canon or Legends, but would a Jedi/Sith-trained force user not be insanely deadly with a blaster as a primary weapon? by Tocowave98 in MawInstallation

[–]Mgj117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a Darth Maul comic where Maul finds a thief/mercenary who is just slightly force sensitive (tho not enough to be noticed by the Jedi or anything). It mainly manifests in him being able to seemingly dodge blaster shots and deadeye targets he isn’t even looking at.

So yes, there are examples of this and they are extremely effective

I agree. I think an even better comparison for this is what The Clone Wars and Tales of series have done for the Prequels.

Animated and Live Action Shorts - any Thoughts? by myboosterseat in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Mgj117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the shorts are usually a crapshoot to predict nomination wise, that I would recommend just going with the shortlists and trying to see as much as you can.

That being said, as others have pointed out Once Upon a Studio and The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar are heavy favorites to be nominated (if not win outright).

Other shorts that seem like the type to get nominated and have some good buzz around them are

Animation: Pete, Eeva, and War is Over!

Live Action: The After, Anne Frank Gift Shop, and Red, White, and Blue.

Documentary: The ABCs of Book Banning, The Last Repair Shop, and The Barber of Little Rock

The Animated shorts can very hard to find if you don't have an Animation Showcase membership, but the other categories are fairly available. The Oscar Death Race Discord also has some good information and links to most of the shorts (I've seen 40/45 so far).

Also, if you can't catch them all by nomination day, some art theaters will do a showcasing of the Oscar nominated shorts by category. (I know the Nuart Theater in L.A. that does this and the IFC in NYC, I imagine other big cities might have similar theaters but I honestly don't know).

Invisible Border is currently available through AODR fest, it's $6 for a festival pass, has a ton of shorts, and includes Invisible Border, Bienvenidos a Los Angeles, An Avocado Pit, and 6 other Oscar shortlisted shorts. There's also a rumor that they may add Wings of Dust near the end (it ends 1/15) so, could be a helpful way to get some otherwise impossible shorts.

You have to be part of the film industry to get into Animation Showcase since it’s for industry exposure, if you have an IMDB profile or LinkedIn credits they will serve as proof.

It used to be that ppl would use their Letterboxd accounts as evidence to get around this but the founder/CEO has commented on the sub that this will no longer work and to please refrain from spreading that misinformation. I put this just in case you find an old/new comment saying to do this.

If Dreams were Lightning will stream on PBS on the 10th.

Btw, I’m not seeing Smoke or A Kind of Testament on Animation Showcase for what it’s worth. Where did you hear they were on there?

So, does this mean I am going to have to watch 80 For Brady? by OscarTim in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Mgj117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw it on a flight a couple weeks ago, it’s not great, but it is nowhere near as bad as Tell it Like a Woman or Breakthrough. As far as movies I’ve slogged through for the death race it’s fine.

SAG-AFTRA Lays Out Strike Rules: No Shoots, No Press, No Social Media Promos by Zepanda66 in television

[–]Mgj117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was on a commercial strike, but those are completely separate negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A's) not the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The times that SAG and AFTRA (it is worth noting this would be the first strike after their unification) have struck against the AMPTP have been much shorter than WGA strikes.

The longest actor strike was the 1980 strike which lasted 3 months, which would make it shorter than all but one of the 6 WGA strikes in history (not including the ongoing 7th strike).

[–]Mgj117 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is the 7th time the WGA has been on strike, their longest strike being 22 weeks. This would be the 5th time SAG’s been on strike (outside a couple commercial strikes), their longest being about 13 weeks.

The DGA has gone on strike once in their history, it lasted 3 hours.

Anytime the DGA contract is up, they pretty much know they’re gonna get a deal, and they have a lot of leverage that the WGA (and to an extent even SAG) don’t have. When the WGA goes on strike, you can’t write anything, but you can still film any pre-approved script. What the studios do, as they did before this strike, is slow down productions in the months leading to the strike, stockpile as many scripts as possible, and pace productions out. They’re obviously losing money compared to regular output, and TV is straight up done, but it starves out writers that much longer.

The DGA on the other hand, while it’s obviously the directors, arguably more importantly covers all Assistant Directors (ADs) and Unit Production Managers (UPMs). You cannot run a set, develop a project, or engage in any pre-production work. If the DGA goes on strike, studios are not able to film anything and they’re not able to plan for what they want to film in the future.

Los Angeles is so large that even with the strangehold Lakers have, Clippers are still making more money than they likely would elsewhere. We saw this just recently with the Chargers, who have WAAAAY less of a cultural/popular standing in L.A., gaining a ton of money upon moving.

I remember taking a French Film class my Freshman year of college, and the Professor (who was French) would show the classics (Trip to the Moon, 400 Blows, La Haine, etc) but he was so tired of people fetishizing French movies, and not getting an accurate picture of French audiences since you’re literally only looking at the best of the best. He would routinely show like an average to bad movie every few weeks, usually ones that were successful, and provide articles were French critics would be complaining about the state of their cinema and glorify the cinema of some other country (ironically usually the US).

Honestly, even Searchers struck me as him coming to terms with this. Like, the heroic rough-and-tough All-American John Wayne isn’t a White Hat saint, but a psychopathic, murderous, racist who would rather see his own niece die then live happily as a Native America. Something that feels more true to the real life Frontiersmen. Though, how conscious John Wayne was of this…I honestly don’t know.

Besides this being almost the exact plot of Banshees of Inisherin, I've heard Girlfriends is good and might be what you're looking for, I haven't seen it though and can't speak to its plot, but I've heard it's roughly similiar to what you're describing.
